The south-side sister of Bimbo's (i do live Northside) that has a pretty similar drinks and food menu. The double story venue is quite popular amongst the locals and tourists alike and the reason why? Because it is a solid venue that offers good drinks, great food and a very chilled atmosphere. Upon entrance you will find some loungey rustic sofas and good background music. If you take a gander upstairs you will find something similar but also a courtyard with a pleasant decor (i love that they have pot plant's going up the wall). A friend and I came here on a sunny afternoon pub crawl and enjoyed some ciders and pizza. The pizza offerings are quite great, a truly diverse range and delicious (just make sure you are here when they are four dollars). As we sat out the back we weren't really happy with the fact that the tables were really dirty and no one came out to clean them whilst we dined / drunk. This pub on Chapel Street has a lot going for it. One: Very cheap and surprisingly gourmet pizzas starting at $4. Two: There are the top beers on tap (including my favourite, Little Creatures). Three: There is a very cool upstairs courtyard for the smokers and you can eat and drink out there. Four: The music they play is great, especially on a Friday where they play some older tunes and there is plenty of room for a boogie. Five: The couches or booths downstairs are a fantastic idea and extremely comfy (it makes me feel like I never left the house). Six: With all these awesome up sides, it means it attracts a really good crowd of people where I have always been able to chat to others and have a really good time. Lucky Coq is exactly what I want in a pub and am still a little upset at the fact they don't still keep making pizzas till the early hours of the morning. Either way, whoever came up with the decor and makes sure that it's charm isn't lost, should be congratulated. This is one of my favourite places to go out to and is always a winner on those annoying nights where you seem to be walking around trying to find a cool place to go. Well, that suits me just fine because I know who I'm not going to be running into at this place. Came in here last night at 1am. No line and lots of people inside. Crowd is 99% 18-23 yr olds. Music was ok. $10 lychee and pomegranate Ketal one infusions were very good. Lamb pizza was disgusting. Flour, water some old, dry souvlaki meat and a bit of salad. Service was horrendous, long wait to get a drink even though not that many people waiting, extremely rude staff. I could not rave more about Lucky Coq. The slightly more mainstream sibling of Fitzroy's edgy Bimbos, Lucky Coq is always a guaranteed good night out. One of the rare venues that is popular week round, the crowd is generally young, hip, broke and in search of a good time. The mismatched saloon style furniture sets the tone, all red velvets and fringing. Moroccan lanterns and fairy lights make for a magical courtyard dining experience, while inside the sexy dim lighting sets the mood. $4 pizzas mean that getting a table is always a challenge, so be prepared to share. And while you might not expect much in return for a little loose change, these pizzas are some seriously amazing gourmet fare. Some particular favourites are: Agnello- tomato, parmesan, mozzarella, spiced lamb, rocket, pinenuts, sultanas. Aglio Olio- garlic, chilli, olive oil, parsley, parmesan. Zucchine- tomato, mozzarella, zucchini, sundried tomatoes, parmesan Naturally the drinks are a little on the pricey side to make up for the outrageously cheap pizzas but its more than worth it. The music is pretty awesome and everyone crams onto the dance floor to assess their potential prey. Have a lot of predrinks as the upstairs bar wait could sober you up. If this is not for you maybe a cheap $4 pizza on a couch or in the upstairs beer garden is the way to go. Get there early for seats especially for a rooftop position. If you are on a downstairs couch don't drink too much as you will be going up and down the stairs to the only toilets in the building. On a weekend the toilets are not flash BUT the old school decoupage porn on the walls is awesome. The wine and beer lists are ok but pretty basic but this is definitely a pub aimed/suited to uni students/backpackers/23yr olds on the prowl. Which is pretty fun really. read more

Oh Lucky Coq. You make me laugh. It's not you, it's me. Please don't get upset - let me explain. If you're looking for a slightly dodgy venue with cheap food and drinks smack bang in the middle of Windsor, this is it! The food is cheap ($4 pizzas!), there are plenty of beers on tap and the decor is like my first sharehouse - lots of band posters and sticky miscellaneous carpet. In other words, it's a good place to head to first for a few drinks and line your stomach inner southside. The thing that makes me snigger is that after a certain time - like 8pm - the people who start pouring in look like Justin Beiber and about 12 years old. I have to fight the urge to shout "does your mother know where you are?!" and this makes me feel tres old. But this is my issue Lukcy Coq, not yours. Having said that, my days of hanging with undergrads are somewhat past me and I tend to make a hasty exit at that point in time and head somewhere more age appropriate for me. So please don't get upset. It's an age thing. You were my utopia in the early 2000s. That was a long time ago. I am moving on so the *next gen* can get to experience the decor and pizza and be patronising 10 years later as well. read more

This place is in a prime location, right on the corner of High St. and Chapel. The causal passer by may already be aware of it owing to the bouncers who get in the way of pedestrians and make them silent partners in their often crass, sweary banter. Venture inside and you're met with couches, a decent menu (can't attest to the quality of food) and a bar staffed by people who have no problem making you wait, regardless of how busy it isn't. It is usually busy, though. Owing to location rather than quality, Lucky Coq gets pretty rammed, especially on a weekend. There's an upstairs bar, a dance floor and live music, so it ticks a lot of boxes but ultimately it's a bit charmless. There's no reason you'd choose to go back that couldn't also be attributed to every other average bar on the strip. read more

$4 pizza, how on earth could you go wrong? Well the pizzas could be cheap and cruddy...but at Lucky Coq they are as good, if not better, than the $18 pizzas you would get at any other restaurant. Even at their after hours full price (which seems to be almost never) of around the $9-$10 mark, still a bargain. Maybe it's an age thing. Maybe it's a crowd thing. I really don't know, I just know that Lucky Coq isn't MY thing. My wife and I went to attend a colleague's birthday party there. It was packed, loud, impossible to move around, get service at the bar upstairs (too small) and we got tired of having beer spilled on us by people rushing outside to light up -- which COMPLETELY kills the "beer garden" they have. If you're a student and broke, and looking to have a cheap pizza, I hear it's the place to go. If you want to actually enjoy the company of friends, probably the best advice is to go early, well before the "music" kicks in, and get out before the hairspray and gel brigade show up. read more

Okay, I think I'm going to go against a lot of Melburnians on this one but Lucky Coq is really starting to lose its appeal. For me, anyway. The popular Chapel Street restaurant and bar - the sister bar to Bimbos on Brunswick Street - has sadly let me down on the last few visits for a number of reasons. Firstly, the venue that is famous for its $4 gourmet pizzas, never seems to be serving them for that price when I'm there!? I know, I know, it's just my bad timing, because realistically, the hours for this special are quite generous (weekdays 12pm-4pm, Mon-Thurs 7-11pm, Fri-Sat 7-9pm and Sunday all day til 11pm). Anyway, not to be too stingy (the regular price for these pizzas are around $8/$9), I still ordered my Gorgonzola pizza but wasn't too thrilled when it came out. The prosciutto was lined over the entire base in huge strips and the gorgonzola was just too overpowering. Overall, it wasn't bad, but with the amount of pubs competing with cheap gourmet pizzas, I think I could easily say I've had better. In fact, I wish I chose the rocket, walnut, prosciutto and bocconcini salad which was on the new menu, because I think that sounds delicious. Food aside, Lucky Coq is also popular as a drinking spot for those starting off their nights - shame their drinks are quite expensive, compared to the countless bars on Chapel Street that serve permanent specials and dirt cheap bevvys. For $8, I received a gin and soda in a small glass, filled with ice. That said, Lucky Coq's delicious range of flavoured vodkas (lychee, peach, apple etc), which you can customise yourself, were worth the extra cash. Lastly, despite the quirky interior - with collectables and antiques plastered on the walls and ceiling, and array of second hand couches - upstairs is always really stuffy. We recently attended on a Saturday afternoon that was quite mild and wet out, and found ourselves overheating and unable to go out into the 'courtyard' type area because of the rain. On a clear night, the outside bit upstairs is actually quite atmospheric with lanterns and dim lighting. The venue is generally filled with alternative hipsters that will compete with you for the couches both inside and out, but if you can manage to secure your own area, Lucky Coq is casual enough for you and your friends to chill before moving on to somewhere more upbeat. read more

The environment at the Lucky Cow is great, wide open, so many tables, and so much variety of tables at that! The staff is always friendly, and if there is a line its gone quick. The pizza is almost always $4 (check website for times) and it is awesome pizza, I always just get the Calabrese. The beer selection is quick good, and average priced. I love the Coq!!! Seriously, $4 gourmet pizzas- and the most divine desert pizza you will probably come across! The Lucky Coq generally has a feel-good quality about it thanks to the fact it doesn't take itself too seriously and attracts a diverse, fun clientele. You generally won't wait too long for a drink but you will probably have to wait, elbow people out of the way and share when it comes to the table situation. Upstairs is a really nice outdoor area and I give them props for the bathrooms which are clean and classy. Although this place is large it is still charming and the decor is quirky and cute. You are pretty much guaranteed a fun night here, but be prepared to wait at the door if you rock up after about 10pm. read more

Lucky Coq is very popular with the average 20 something, inner city crowd, mainly because we Melburnians love a fun relaved bar with cheap food, good drinks and great music. $ 4 gourmet pizzas...... can you go wrong? Now personally, I still love a regular old Aussie pizza from my local piza joint, but as far as an easy and tasty bite at a bar goes, this definitely fits the bill. Try the Salsiccia with sausage, tomato, capsicum, mozzarella, rosemary and oregano, or for something a bit different, the caesr pizza. They have some really fun nights here, so keep an eye on their website for drink deals, special events, and upcoming live shows. Friday nights are fun for a retro music mix, and lots of people will get up for a bit of a boogy. Without a doubt my favourite place for dinner south of the river... where else can you buy dinner and drinks for two for $20? (Dumplings don't count) Apart from the low price the vibe here is great... lots of couches, dim lighting, pleasant background house music and cool wallpapered toilets. The attendees are typically relaxed hipsters, helped I think by the 'no suits' policy. Great place to meet with friends as well, and Thursday night is usually pretty lively. My favourite bar/pub in Melbourne! The bar itself is clean with a wide array of drinks and the pizzas are pretty damn good. Best part about this place is the rooftop courtyard, as well as being gorgeous you're able to chat and meet a bunch of people there. Plus, the security guys are actually nice for a change. This used to be a regular of mine due to literally living 5 mins away, which with my love of pizza became a very dangerous habit! You can never go wrong with pizza let alone $4 pizza! I don't believe they are the greatest pizza's but again how can you complain for $4? I give them 3 star as I find the friendliness of staff very hit and miss and the drinks prices at times can be outrageous but then other times seem really really cheap?
