I was initially reluctant to use a wedding/event planner for several reasons - wanting to save money, being fairly crafty/creative myself and having confidence in handling on my own details in pursuing something less "traditional", and being pretty resourceful. Shortly into the planning process, I realized it was going to be harder than I thought. I then met Mandi Buckland of Element Design. What sealed the deal was her calm energy and diversity in events she's worked on (weddings, parties, festivals, including "green" fests/events). She was great in identifying several unique wedding location options in Southwest and Southern MI, including a fabulous barn, a garden, and a super cool lodge (we ended up at a mansion in Holland). When I asked her to design the invitations with a "modern art nouveau theme" using a peacock to match the theme of a mansion built in the early 1900s (not easy!) - she provided several fabulous sample designs within a short period of time. Our final invitations were really unique and fun! After our invites went out, I received an unexpected amount of of great feedback ("I love your invitations!" "They are so unique," etc.) and I could tell they made people look forward to the wedding. I felt like Mandi figured out my sense of my style quickly, and she was able to identify options that fit that were creative, cost-conscious (extra plus) and didn't compromise on quality. At the same time she was working with me, she was helping a friend design invitations for a wedding at the Drake Hotel in Chicago, so her range of work can be simple, arty/less traditional, to more traditional/upscale. Pretty impressive! Mandi is professional, efficient, super creative, and I would recommend her to anyone in Chicago, Detroit (or anywhere in between the two cities in Michigan or Illinois) who is planning a wedding in Southwest or Southern Michigan!

Tracy and Todd and the rest of the staff at the Meeting House made the entire experience so incredibly enjoyable. From the first meeting to the final exit Tracy and Todd were - friendly, respectful, helpful, attentive, responsive and incredibly kind to say the least. They fielded phone calls, emails and many may questions from myself, and parents of the bride and groom. The food was incredible, the service was outstanding the venue was beautiful. It exceeded every expectation and with much help from the entire staff at the Meeting House my wedding was as cliche as it sounds. The best day of our lives! The space was incredibly large and laid out in a very cool way, the high ceilings and wood floods with grand piano and fire place made it such cozy, beautiful venue for our wedding day! Luckily decor was much better when we reached our party room destination. Travelling apps were not terribly impressive but still tastyish. The bacon wrapped chicken on a skewer was ginormous. Awkward to eat. Tasted the best of the three though. The crabcakes were miniscule and mostly breading. My husband seemed unimpressed with the shrimp. The salads were simply dressed with no option but with what I guess could be called vinaigrette if I were being generous. The rolls were very grainy and not my thing. My salmon would have been terrific if it had been fresh. It was a huge portion but cold and the sauce had congealed. I liked the roasted potatoes and the veggies but again, cold. My husbands sliced steak concoction was at least warm and it was super tender. It was also well beyond a generous portion. He disliked the sauce though. The bar staff did well. We avoided the pitchers of flat beer and bad merlot, which helped. The mixed drinks were stellar. My Tito's and soda with a wee splash of cran and a lime were perfect. My husbands tequila and pineapple was also delish. Dessert was as good as the alcohol. Fantastic apple spice cake with cream cheese and caramel and a creamy chocolate pie. Yum. It was just typical wedding to me. I would never choose it myself.

The location is also wonderful: just 10-15 minutes outside of Ann Arbor and close enough to a major airport to make travel easy for out-of-town guests. A waterside gazebo was nearby if you wanted some shelter. My main quibble came as we were walking out. There are no lights in the parking area and it was a little difficult to find the row we'd parked in. As well lit as the area around the buildings was, couldn't one light be put in the parking area? Still, a very pleasant night, and I'd be happy to return.

They jumped to accommodate our brunch catering request, and did so flawlessly. The guests were extremely impressed with their ability to serve and maintain breakfast foods buffet style, and raved about the options and taste of all the food. I would highly recommend them for anything you need. Despite being a little pricy, it was well worth the expense.
