He has been doing head shots for over 15 years and really knows his trade. In less than an hour Johnny took over 350 pics of me at which point we downloaded the pics onto his p.c. and then reviewed all the different shots. If I didn't find any of the pictures to my satisfaction, he was willing to take another set of shots. However, the pics were great, so he put them on a disc and I was on my way. However, at two recent events covered by Drew Altizer Photography, their photographer was extremely obtrusive, distracting, and disruptive to guests. Several attendees even commented on how much the photographer's behavior detracted from the experience. Instead of documenting the event, the photographer became the center of attention -- which significantly diminished the overall quality of both events. While I'm sure the photos turned out well, it came at the expense of the guest experience.

We hired Micah Weiss to photograph our wedding, May 17, 2014. Last year, September 9, 2013, we made…read morea written agreement where Mr. Weiss was to work for 6 hours for $1000 to capture our day, and we would pay for his travel expenses, SF to Mill Valley, $35. We received similar quotes from other wedding photographers. Mr. Weiss was to provide ALL unaltered wedding images, so we agreed to pay him in full prior to the wedding shoot. At the wedding Mr. Weiss was staggeringly unprofessional. He arrived an hour late to the wedding, missing important shots such as the boutonniere being pinned to my husband. He arrived just about 20 min before the official I do's. He asked me just hours before the wedding for the address and start time, information which was provided months prior. Mr. Weiss fought with the parking attendant, because the parking staff told him that he was blocking other wedding guests. He refused to move in spite of protests from parking staff, forcing the groom to stop his preparation to intervene. Mr. Weiss dressed in clothing not appropriate for our formal wedding day, bright blue tennis shoes, plaid shirt, and khakis. Mr. Weiss did not work during parts of the wedding: for example, during the ceremony he stopped working and then later at the reception he sat down at a table for guests. All other staff appropriately sat at other locations that did not impede on guests. It wasn't until a minute after the reception began that he discovered the open bar. Midway through the wedding he became visibly drunk, there wasn't a contract about not drinking the bar dry, but it's apparent that he did. Multiple guests noticed this, including one who wrote me about it. His photos are all unusable after that point in the evening, showing a noticeable degradation in quality. He neglected to bring the list of formal photos he was provided a week in advance. A bridesmaid had to print another copy for him. He did not take all of the formal photos he was supposed to. A guest overheard him bragging that he was going to skip one of the most important images (B&G with parents on both sides) because it was "too complicated" to organize the people involved. Mr. Weiss only took photos from one side of the ceremony, so no shots of the bridesmaids exist. Mr. Weiss skipped major moments of the ceremony and reception, which were requested. He then takes a bottle of champagne home at the end of the evening, which was for guests. I was reluctant to say no because he was shooting our wedding. He DID NOT provide the images he promised after we paid him in full. He stated that ("but as i see you guys traveling from country to country .. its very clear that you had money , you were just stiffying me so you could spend it on yourself ... making you look pretty bad .. and after I got your free rental gear !!! you really didnt make yourself look like a great client ... w all these actions and expecting so much") he wanted more money after the wedding was over, while we were on our honeymoon (it was more than stressful), stating that if we can afford to travel on a weeks long honeymoon, then we can afford to pay him more money for the images that we want. Beware, he's untrustworthy, will try to gouge you for more money after the event, and staggeringly unprofessional.

I figure the easiest way to review them is to break it up into 3 areas: Sales/Contract, Videographer/Day of, and Final Video. This way I can describe how it went and offer some advice/things to look for... SALES/CONTRACT - The demo video was decent, and the price was right. By the time we got around to the videographer selection process, we were a little burned out - but they seemed to be reputable. They were willing to provide us with all of the raw footage in addition to the edited video. The contract (which I didn't notice at first) was a little vague. It basically stated the total cost. That's it. There was no break-down of what it included which caused issues closer to the wedding date when I wanted to confirm that there were going to be 2 cameras at the church. 2 cameras costs extra. In retrospect, I would have requested the contract have a break-down of the number of hours we were hiring them for, how many cameras at the church, how many cameras at the reception, and what we would receive after the wedding. I still think the price was right, though. VIDEOGRAPHER/DAY OF - Our videographer was AWESOME! He was punctual (a trait I always find attractive in a vendor), showing up at the hotel before the ceremony to take a few clips of the Bridal party and the Groomsmen getting ready. It was kind of nice that he sort of faded into the woodwork. I hardly knew he was there and he managed to get some really good shots. At the church he had 2 cameras set up (one un-manned in the choir loft & one in the side balcony). We got married at Stanford Memorial Church (MemChu) which unfortunately comes with MANY restrictions, but he worked around them as best he could. He even got some clips from around campus and of us getting our pictures taken after the ceremony. At the reception, he was everywhere we were. He stayed later than we had originally contracted him for since the 'mandatory' wedding festivities took longer than expected. He was very professional and a pleasure to work with. FINAL VIDEO - Raw footage DVD was fine -- what we expected. The edited DVD was so-so. The QUALITY of the video itself was great (obviously very-high quality cameras used), but there were a few small things that could have been improved to make a positive impact. ** First, there weren't any chapters built into the DVD. To get to a certain part of the ceremony or reception, we have to fast forward through everything. Chapters are not that hard to add. If you have hired them to do your wedding, request chapters on your DVD. ** Second, we had given them a list of songs to use for the edited video, but apparently we didn't give them enough since they ended up using extra songs on the DVD. Some of them were ok, some we weren't all that pleased with. Now we'll have to live with them forever. They should have either requested more songs on the original info sheet, or asked for more when they were putting the edited video together. ** Lastly, since MemChu required only THEIR sound equipment be used during the ceremony, BFW was given a CD with the recording of the wedding. Well, BFW didn't seem to use it. We had requested that the entire wedding ceremony be un-cut on the final edited video. BFW used different music for the processional and shows me walking down the aisle to something other than 'Here Comes the Bride'. After watching the raw footage, I realized that their camera speakers were near the organ and sounded 'blown out'. Yeah, their contract says they cannot be held responsible for extraneous noises such as ... loud bells, chimes, etc., but with a little extra effort, they could have used the church's sound CD with their video to provide an amazing DVD of our wedding ceremony. Overall, the company was great to work with. The people we worked with before, during and after the wedding were all friendly, professional and responsive. My inexperience in hiring videographers I believe led to SOME of my disappointment, but like I said before we were burned out by then. Things I didn't know to ask for and things I expected but didn't explicitly ask for will hopefully help others in working with BFW or even another videographer. Regardless, I watch the video every few months. Photos are nice, but the video brings it all back to life...

My business mentor urged me to get a new professional photo to use on my website and other places…read morewhere I wanted my work to get noticed. I had been using an old photo (with the advantage that I looked younger, but not really as I look today) and also a drawn self-portrait that I thought did the job. But my mentor said, "People really want to see you on your website. They want that personal connection." So I went to Yelp, and winnowed the options down to 6 or 7 photographers in my area who did portrait photography. I researched the sites of all of them, and ended up feeling like the Goldilocks story: this one was too expensive, that one did professional head shots that looked more formal than what I wanted for myself, or too polished. (I didn't want to look glossy, just authentically attractive.) When I got to BK Photographie, I was met by landscape photos - but they were beautiful! Really lovely, magnetic, sensitive. I didn't see portraits of people there, but I intuitively trusted that anyone who could do such beautiful landscape photos could do headshots of me that would make me happy to share publicly. When I saw that he would actually come to my home (the other places had external studios), and charged a flat fee I could afford, I contacted him right away. The shoot went really well. Brian is a friendly guy with extensive photo knowledge. He came with all his equipment, though he didn't turn out to need it all. He suggested indoor poses (in a chair, standing by my baby grand piano) and outdoor poses (by a tree for its purple flower, by a tree for its stippled bark). He took dozens and dozens of photos, to the point where I stopped being self-conscious. At the end, he told me he would take a bit of time to choose and edit the photos, and then send them to me as jpg files. That was fine with me. When they finally arrived in my inbox, I was really happy with what I saw. He had chosen just a handful (two handsful, actually), out of the many click-click-clicks going on at the shoot. This pleased me too. He had chosen well. I have now uploaded several jpgs onto my website to replace the drawn self-portrait - and I can see the difference. I look vivid, friendly, present - and around my age. No matter. The beauty is there, and Brian found it and documented it for me to use and share. I highly recommend BK Watson Photographie!
