The food is good but they are out of touch. They used to be reasonably priced and like every other Mexican restaurant in the area provided chips and salsa. Now they provide a small bowl but if you eat more than 2 for your whole table, regardless of people, you will have to pay extra for it. Then for fajitas you will pay extra for any tortillas past the couple they provide. Overall prices have risen several dollars per plate from what they were a year ago. Always a comfortable, reliable spot with above average food and service until our last visit, (10/5/19). The waitress took my half empty tea glass early on and never returned with a refill. When she finally brought the entrees, 3 out of 4 were ice cold, (cheese enchiladas, of all things!), and my nephew's tamale had a hair on it! Absolutely horrid food and customer service. Ordered to -go, said it would be ready in 15-20 minutes, arrived 10 minutes after the call, and they were already ready. Drove home-3 minute drive, opened the order and this is what we saw.... food was already cold, dried up shrimp was boiled, not grilled, and looked old , smelled extremely fishy, no tortillas, pico de Gallo juice all over, runny beans with ZERO taste, all onions. Called immediately and told them about the order and that I had no tortillas and the food was cold. She said she would remake it and give me bean dip for my trouble to have to drive back up there. I specifically asked if I needed to bring the food back, and she said NO. Drive back up there and the manager denied everything. Tried to give me 1 small roll of tortillas (for 2 orders), bean dip and chips. Denied that she said she would remake the order. Then I asked for my money back if they wouldn't remake the now really cold order. She said no and offered a discount. I stated again loudly in a full restaurant that I wanted my money back for these crappy shrimp fajitas, or they remake them as promised.She asked me to step outside so she could help the customers. I said, no, I am a customer....she then tried to offer a discount.... I again said no. She then told me to go back home again and get the fajitas and she would remake them, even though she told me no when I specifically asked if I needed to bring the first order back. This restaurant is our family "GO TO" restaurant. The food is great and the service better. We have introduced Lupe's to several of our close friends at church and now regularly run into some of them almost every time we go, and we go there a couple times each week. We have margaritas and Tableside Guacamole every time. Bardo (our favorite waiter) usually sees us come in and has our margaritas on the table by the time we sit down. Then he rolls up the table where he makes our guac and has it in front of us in minutes. If you want great Tex`Mex food and great service, stop by Lupe's. I took Celeste's advice and took my wife out to a nice mexican dinner at Lupe's on Friday. I always love going to little hole-in-the-wall places that no one's heard about, especially for mexican, because their food just seems to taste better, more authentic...new! When we entered the strip mall, I admit, it was a little hard to find at first because you have to drive all the way around nearly to the back of the strip center to find it...and that's after you traverse the loud crowds roaming the parking lot around Duke's. (If you're planning on going there, if you enter the strip mall from the service road of 183, just head towards the Carnival store and it's right around the corner from there.) Typically when I go to a new mexican restaurant, I base a lot of what I think about the place by their chips and salsa. Think about it, this is the FIRST thing they are wanting you to try, they are banking on the fact that you like their chips and salsa, because they hope that will transcend over to liking their main dishes. Lupe's chips and salsa were a GREAT start to our meal. The chips were lightly salted, warm, fresh out of the kitchen, and they tasted authentic, not like they were just taken out of a bag or something. The salsa had a bit of a kick to it, which was a little too much for my wife and I, but the black bean dip was exquisite. So far, it's shaping into a wonderful dinner experience. I order the "Bedford Special" which consists of a pork tamale, cheese enchilada, and a beef taco, and my wife orders the Pescado Cilantro Lime. Karen was our waitress and she was very assertive, quick, and friendly throughout the entire night. When she brought the food, and I took one whiff of the smell, I knew we were going to be fully satisfied. The tamale was fresh and authentic tasting, the enchilada (which I changed to a beef) was spicy and tasty, and the beef taco was excellent. They use a different spice on their beef that I don't think I have ever tasted, but it was delicious! My wife was ooing and ahhing her wonderful fish plate. She is half Colombian and she said the plate arrangement and spices were like what she had in Colombia when she was a little girl. I got a taste of her grilled veggies and I was ooing and ahhing just like her. The mushrooms and zucchini were grilled with a slight lime zest and thrown together with carrots and peppers...yummy! I'm not much of a fish person but from my wife's perspective and her reactions to every bite, I'd have to guess that it was good. We aren't usually dessert people but again, Celeste had gone on about how good their sopapilla was, so we had to try it. It was probably the BEST (I don't use CAPS that much either) sopapilla I have ever had. It was warm, light and fluffy, but slightly crispy to the bite. What a way to top off the night!! In the end, my wife and I have found a new favorite place to eat Mexican here in the Mid-Cities and we're going to tell everyone we can about it. **TIP** Stick with the sopapilla for your dessert. My wife ordered the flan as well, and she didn't like it so much, and being half latin, she knows flan. Lupe's seems sort of lonely in its strip mall -- not because there's nothing around it, but, I think, because it's in kind of a wierd location by the side entrance to the parking lot where the strip mall curves around. So, if you're a cheesy frat boy looking for some action at Duke's, or you just want to grab something quick from McDonald's, or Starbucks, you may never see Lupe's. But that's not my excuse -- I've passed by this place nearly every day since I moved here over 2 years ago. However, for no reason in particular, I've just never felt like giving it a try until today. Things started off strong -- their chips and salsa are great. The chips are crunchy and very corny. Their red salsa has a bit of a bite. They also give you a bean dip, which I mostly ignored, but my wife and kids really liked. Their menu is quite large, with a lot of dishes that you won't find at many other Tex-Mex places. In this regard, the shrimp enchiladas immediately caught my eye. I was a little nervous trying a new dish at a new restaurant (as opposed to trying one of my favorites, like the Tacos al Carbon,) but, what the heck. The shrimp enchiladas were very good. I chose the poblano sauce over the mole. The shrimp were cooked and seasoned perfectly. Everything else that was IN the enchiladas was great, but the poblano sauce was a little bit on the bland side for my taste. While we're on the subject of bland, the rice was a bit bland too. However, I can justify giving Lupe's 4 stars because the shrimp were really outstanding, and the poblano sauce definitely had SOME flavor. Since it was my first time having poblano sauce, I'm not really sure what it was supposed to taste like. Given that my other choice was a mole (which is supposed to be bland,) it's quite possible that it was supposed to be that way. Because I'm a sucker for local places, I'm going to give Lupe's the benefit of the doubt this time (4 stars over 3.) I'll definitely be back, and will try something more familiar to me so that I will know for sure. read more

This is my FAV tex-mex joint in the mid-cities - lovely little locally-owned spot on the backside of a strip mall next to Blockbuster. We used to eat here weekly when we lived in Bedford, but now get there about once every other month and they never disappoint. My favorite thing on the menu is Carne a la Tampenquiena - I'm sure I botched the spelling, but it is so freakin good...it has the BEST ranchero sauce I've ever had. Their enchiladas are pretty good too - they make a great mole sauce. They have a cheap lunch menu, the dinner prices are standard $8-15. I had lunch here last Friday and the service and food were awesome. It was still very busy at 1:30 PM but we were seated within 5 minutes, our drink orders were taken immediately and the waiter was very persistent about taking our food order - I finally told the waiter that we were not in a hurry since "we are killing time between visiting hours in the ICU at the hospital down the street". Our waiter was a sweetheart after that - always checking in but not hovering over us. The chips and salsa were an excellent start - the chips were freshly fried and the salsa was fresh and the perfect spiciness! I had the Friday Special - Grilled Fish Tacos, I subbed the rice for refried beans at no extra cost and grilled veggies (squash and red bell peppers) - and it was excellent and a huge amount of food for a measly 6.99! I also had an excellent margarita which racked up my lunch bill; but, after a week of camping out in the ICU at Harris Hospital the price of a margarita or 2 is an inexpensive indulgence! So, if you happen to live in the area or happen to find yourself camping out out at the hospital down the street check this place out. read more

Like many other reviewers, I've also been driving by Lupe's every day for years. Yesterday, I took the advise of yelpers and stopped in for a late lunch and now this will be my new favorite in the mid-cities. I think the best way to judge tex-mex is by how well they do the basics , so I ordered the beef enchiladas off of the lunch menu (which runs till 4:00), and it passed my test with flying colors. The food was served fast, was hot, really flavorful without being greasy, and the thick, warm tortilla chips were a real treat. Even at 2:30, there were a few customers and service was excellent. Going to a restaurant at odd times can sometimes be a risk, both food and service wise, but no problem at Lupe's. I can't wait to go back and try other items on the menu. read more

I don't often feel so bad for posting a negative review... But I'd be doing the public a disservice if I didn't. I've eaten here plenty of times. It's about halfway between my parents place and mine... so we would meet up here often. I've enjoyed literally everything I've ever eaten there (except for the atomic sauce... Kinda gross). I don't have anything bad to say about the recipes. It's just casual mexican/tex-mex. However, the last time I was here (and the last time, ever) we had quite an issue. My girlfriend ordered a dish which was served with mixed grilled veggies and potatoes as a side dish. One of the potato chunks actually had a mother-loving COCKROACH inside of it. It was a mini roach or baby, totally dead (cooked) into this potato. Immediately, we notified our server who was apologetic to the point of tearing up. He got his manager who, honestly, did not impress. This is where they went horrendously wrong. The young manager approached a table about 3 tops down and proceeded to ask them if anyone found a roach in their food. After replying no, he went to the next table and repeated the process. And then the next table. Now, hopefully none of them had found little buggies in their food, but I guarantee they were looking for them now!!! He returned to the kitchen and then came back out to the correct table, ours. He seemed pleased to have finally found the culprit. Ahem, I mean victim. After the typical apology spiel he said that he would HALVE the cost of our meal. Now, I don't go out looking for problems and subsequent free meals, but there was a damn bug in the food. That = free in my eyes. But it gets better. We were then told how surprised he was that there was a roach since they have an exterminator visit the location EVERY TWO WEEKS. Every two weeks? I don't hire an exterminator unless I have bugs. I don't know about you. So, to sum up, we won't be going back. It's unfortunate because I actually did enjoy their dishes and some of the unique spins they took with the cuisine. Lupe's Tex Mex Grill FOOD: The chips are great. They have a little salt so you don't have dump a whole bunch on them right when you get there, unless you are addicted to salt and grew up in the 1950's. The salsa is just spicy enough in my opinion. I am from up north and I don't want my mouth on fire. But I enjoy the bean dip best. It is a nice change up to just regular salsa. It is fantastic. Everything I have ever ordered there was delicious and always made to my preference. DRINKS: I quite enjoy the swirls. They are made perfectly and have a kick to them. As swirls should have. SERVICE: I have never EVER had a problem. I had my 30th pre-party birthday dinner there last year and I called and made arrangements. My table was ready and my group and I were waited on promptly. Lupes! You'll always have my heart. I had my rehearsal dinner here in 2010 and frequented their patio pretty much every Friday for happy hour in my teaching years (pre-motherhood). They serve up a great menu both foodie and drinkie! Their vegetables are amazing. I know that's not particularly what you'd go to tex-mex for, but they are NOT to be missed. Carrots, mushroom and mixed zuchinni and squash...YUMMO.. Love any of their shrimp dishes too, and the Bedford burrito with queso on the side if I'm really in the mood for the true tex-mex dish. The margaritas are huge, tend to make your head fall off (and I mean with lots of love in my heart), and the happy prices are great. $3 bucks for a smaller portion of their famous house margarita. AWESOME. Customer service has always been a plus. These employees work hard and always treat you right! Found this place on Yelp actually and since the reviews were good, went and tried it on 8-12-08. We were immeadiately seated which was nice. Hate waiting to be sat. The waiter was nice enough but I had that feeling he wanted to be at our table as little as possible (it wasn't busy). Also, we had a bad language barrier so we had to repeat the order a few times. I got an enchilada plate. The tortilla's were good, however the beef was a little bland. The sauce was tasty but I would of liked more cheese on top. My fiance got something I can't pronounce but she said it was too spicy and was only able to eat about 1/4th of the meal. She mentioned if she wanted food that hot, we would've went and had Thai food. We did try the margarita's and they were good...and strong. I've always been a big believer that if the chips and salsa are good, then usually good food follows. My fiance and I both didn't care for the chips, however she loved the black bean dip and I found the normal red salsa to be more heat than flavor. Overall, the place wasn't bad. First of all, the chips and salsa are terrific. The salsa is more on the spicy side, and they bring black bean dip for the buttery crispy chips, which are also delicious. The menu is large and they serve everything you might want at a Tex Mex place. They will also customize your entree. For instance, I got an enchilada plate with a salad instead of rice and beans, house dressing was really good. I'm not super crazy about the type of queso they use, but it's certainly not bad.
