I was feeling sick after a long drive, and while looking for somewhere to eat, this came up! I've not been here for over 15 years where I was very young when I came here. The personnel were nice even though I was really bad at Mandarin and needed things repeated. It is definitely bustling and loud here, but I like the atmosphere - it makes your morning feel more upbeat if you are still waking up. Also the food overall was as awesome as I remember. The sweet potato porridge is still unlimited and nice and hot without being scalding. The prices did go up compared to 15 years ago (of course) but it definitely is unique to make it worth it when everywhere else serves pretty heavy food. They have both heavy meat foods to vegetables to vegetarian meat to cater to different tastes. We ordered 6 different dishes and they were all spot on and awesome. I couldn't recommend one over others as it is very much individual tastes.

Whenever I'm not feeling well, this is one of the first places that comes to mind. Their food is comforting, flavorful, and always hits the spot. The prices are on the higher side, and the portions are a little small for what you pay, but the quality and taste make up for it. During lunch, they have a great special: a 3-item combo for $18 or a 4-item combo for $22. If you dine in, you get all-you-can-eat steamed rice and pumpkin porridge, which is a nice bonus and makes the meal much more satisfying. If two people want to share just one combo, keep in mind that the rice and porridge are charged separately per person, at around $3.75. Overall, it's a place I keep coming back to whenever I want comforting Chinese food, especially when I'm feeling under the weather.

Free sweet potato porridge! Almost like fast food but can dine-in for free porridge. My mom been craving for it. And you can get refills on it too. I tried their xo sauce fried with green string beans and its so delicious and tasty! Must come again next time.

Nostalgia, haven't been here for so long! Just as I used to remember it! The staff is super nice, the place is clean, and they have all the food we used to order. We always get their 3 cup chicken , bamboo and spicy pork! The highlight is eating the porridge with the Yam inside! Happy to return and will be back soon!

I don't know why it took me so long before I tried Lu's Garden, I've had this placed bookmarked for years! They have two sides: one side for dine-in and another side for already made items to-go. There are so many to-go items to choose from. Each dish is priced differently and they have all the prices on the menu card. Prices are fair for what you get. Every dish was a hit for me - full of flavor and very well made. Don't skip the yam porridge! It's $2.50 for a small or $5 for the large. The porridge has the perfect consistency and goes very well with all their dishes! Service was friendly and efficient! The parking lot can be a pain during busy times because there is limited parking.

This place is great for comfort food. The service can be off sometimes but for the most part they get their job done lol. Theres a to go area and also a seating area that's pretty good to fit maybe 15 parties. Parking can be a bit difficult since it's a small plaza. Food: Eggplant 8/10: this is always my go to dish here. The flavor is on point and it's great w the porridge. Only downside is that the skin of the eggplant can be hard sometimes so I peel it off and just eat the inside. But the flavor is def there for me. Mapo tofu 7/10 your basic mapo tofu. Minimal numbing spice to it which I like. Tomato egg 8/10: another great comfort food. Flavor is good but can be a bit more tomato-ey maybe a bit more ketchup to bump it up a notch? But I still enjoyed it. Braised pork with egg/ 7/10: they can def braise it more so that the meat is a bit softer, but again I still enjoy the flavor. Overall I find myself coming back, maybe bc it reminds me of my childhood I would come here w my parents. Nostalgic vibes lol. FYI: they automatically charge for porridge/rice if u sit down to eat there. $3 a person.

Great place to get Chinese comfort food at a decent price. It's three dollars per person for unlimited pumpkin congee or rice, which is a great deal if you are hungry. They have a variety of different dishes. You can choose from such as eggplants, green beans, chicken thigh, bean cured or mustard green. Everything is salty, so it goes really well with the congee or rice. You order your food in the front first and then they bring it out to you if you are dining in they have special lunch seven days a week and service is great. They will refill your bowl as you eat, tea is also very good

I love taiwanese porridge! Ordered the jellyfish, braised pork belly, bamboo shoots, and dried tofu strips and they paired great with the porridge. The porridge is standard with yam. Very fresh and delicious! Would definitely come back.

Always a favorite comfort food. Service is quick and food is tasty. It does get busy during dinner so come early to beat the rush. Small store but clean.

Very good place to eat! Also price is legit and many choice can make. You can pick congee or rice

We went to Lu's Garden for the first time for dinner. You order (both for takeout and dine-in) at the counter, where you can peruse the dishes cafeteria-style. We ordered three dishes (braised pork, squid, and stir fry spicy peppers) and got two servings of the porridge ($3 per person, but unlimited refills). The booths were comfy and service was attentive as they proactively offered us porridge refills. The dishes were all solid, especially the stir fry peppers which paired nicely with the porridge. We had enough leftovers for an additional meal at home. Many other dishes we didn't try looked well-cooked and tasty as well!

Came in for their lunch special of 4 items for $22. It is quick and fast ordering. We enjoyed it.

As soon as I walked in, a waiter handed me a menu along with an order slip to fill out while I waited for a table. That sure made the service feel less personal than I'd prefer. Every table was full, people were waiting near the entrance for seats, and the energy inside was loud and lively. These days, I'm more of a quiet-corner kind of diner. Unfortunately, I didn't find my usual quiet corner this time, but I managed to find a corner, and that was good enough. My dinner. Hot Tea ($2.00) Xiao Long Bao (8) ($13.00) The dumplings arrived steaming hot filled with juicy pork and flavorful broth. My favorite part of the meal besides the tea. Spicy Beef Ramen ($16.00) Large chunks of beef sat in a rich, vibrant red broth alongside ramen noodles, vegetables, and a hard-boiled egg. The beef was not as tender as it looked. The broth was too spicy for my liking. I do not recommend. Total: $41.02, including tax and a $7.00 tip. Overall, the food was okay, and the service sure needs improvement.

Every Taiwanese person in LA and the West Coast probably had a 2 degree of separation with everyone else. And so like the Italians, you needed family restaurants to congregate at, and Aghoo precisely is that type of restaurant where Taiwanese Boomers and their children go sit down and have comfort food. This is a school of cooking that many chefs from Mainland China simply cannot replicate today. And there were only a few restaurants in Los Angeles 30 years ago capable of doing it: Happy Family Garden Pacific Plaza 新園餐館, Dumpling King 老夫子 Hacienda Heights Vons Plaza, Sin Bala 新芭樂 Arcadia, and Din Tai Fung 鼎泰豐 Arcadia Location One. That being said, I've always wanted to go back to Taiwan and apprentice under an old school chef and learn this school of stir-fry, you know, carry on the torch. In Taiwan, you used to be able to go to a street stall and order 100 different types of stir fry for dirt cheap, and so the chefs that had the grit to do it became masters at stir fry, authentic green onion beef not that fake Mongolian Beef created for the American Audience...although I equally like the American version. It was survival for the Boomer generation to stand next to a wok all day, to support the business and to support the family. Unlike Italian food, you can't premake Lasagna, Meatballs, marinara sauce and just assemble everything last minute with fresh cooked pasta. Of course, it was the first thing that arrived, so we each voraciously ate a wedge on its own. Fish Filet with Bean Sauce: If you have enough self control, wait until they bring out the fish. The sauce is thick and savory. There's so much flavor from the minced garlic, fermented black beans, and scallions. The silky sauce seem to find a way into all the nooks and crannies of the stellar bread. Fried Red Yeast Pork Belly: The cooking technique of this dish is pretty cool. This is like a crispy char siu. The rich pork belly is marinated in red yeast rice wine for its aromatic flavor. It is coated in tapioca flour and then fried. The edges are crispy and kind of chewy while the meat is juicy and tender. Tofu Skin, Soy Beans, and Mustard Greens: The super thin tofu sheets and soy beans are a Shanghainese classic. With finely chopped mustard greens, the dish is a delightful study of textures: crunchy greens, chewy soy beans, and snappy from the tofu skin. The flavor is neutral and nourishing. There used to be several locations across Southern California, and I'm glad the Arcadia location is still here. Every visit brings back memories. I come for the Taiwanese classics that are becoming harder to find. The popcorn chicken is still one of my favorites--crispy, fragrant, and seasoned the way Taiwanese street vendors do it. The Taiwanese meatball soup is comforting, and the Taiwanese sausage always reminds me of night markets back home. What I appreciate most is that SinBala doesn't just serve street food. It brings those familiar flavors into a warm, home-style setting. It's nostalgic without trying too hard. Before you leave, save room for dessert. Their shaved ice is a must. I always recommend the brown sugar shaved ice topped with five mochi or boba. It's refreshing, not overly sweet, and the perfect ending to a meal. Taiwanese food is often overshadowed by other regional Chinese cuisines, but places like SinBala remind me how unique it really is. Simple, comforting, and full of character. The minced pork with noodles (aka Jia Jiang mien) is also good. For this visit, I did not order dumplings. But their dumplings are usually good. The service is adequate but don't expect good service.
