I was feeling sick after a long drive, and while looking for somewhere to eat, this came up! I've not been here for over 15 years where I was very young when I came here. The personnel were nice even though I was really bad at Mandarin and needed things repeated. It is definitely bustling and loud here, but I like the atmosphere - it makes your morning feel more upbeat if you are still waking up. Also the food overall was as awesome as I remember. The sweet potato porridge is still unlimited and nice and hot without being scalding. The prices did go up compared to 15 years ago (of course) but it definitely is unique to make it worth it when everywhere else serves pretty heavy food. They have both heavy meat foods to vegetables to vegetarian meat to cater to different tastes. We ordered 6 different dishes and they were all spot on and awesome. I couldn't recommend one over others as it is very much individual tastes.

The prices are on the higher side, and the portions are a little small for what you pay, but the quality and taste make up for it. During lunch, they have a great special: a 3-item combo for $18 or a 4-item combo for $22. If you dine in, you get all-you-can-eat steamed rice and pumpkin porridge, which is a nice bonus and makes the meal much more satisfying. If two people want to share just one combo, keep in mind that the rice and porridge are charged separately per person, at around $3.75. Overall, it's a place I keep coming back to whenever I want comforting Chinese food, especially when I'm feeling under the weather.

I don't know why it took me so long before I tried Lu's Garden, I've had this placed bookmarked for years! They have two sides: one side for dine-in and another side for already made items to-go. There are so many to-go items to choose from. Each dish is priced differently and they have all the prices on the menu card. Prices are fair for what you get. Every dish was a hit for me - full of flavor and very well made. Don't skip the yam porridge! It's $2.50 for a small or $5 for the large. The porridge has the perfect consistency and goes very well with all their dishes! Service was friendly and efficient! The parking lot can be a pain during busy times because there is limited parking.
This place is great for comfort food. The service can be off sometimes but for the most part they get their job done lol. Theres a to go area and also a seating area that's pretty good to fit maybe 15 parties. Parking can be a bit difficult since it's a small plaza. Food: Eggplant 8/10: this is always my go to dish here. The flavor is on point and it's great w the porridge. Only downside is that the skin of the eggplant can be hard sometimes so I peel it off and just eat the inside. But the flavor is def there for me. Mapo tofu 7/10 your basic mapo tofu. Minimal numbing spice to it which I like. Tomato egg 8/10: another great comfort food. Flavor is good but can be a bit more tomato-ey maybe a bit more ketchup to bump it up a notch? But I still enjoyed it. Braised pork with egg/ 7/10: they can def braise it more so that the meat is a bit softer, but again I still enjoy the flavor. Overall I find myself coming back, maybe bc it reminds me of my childhood I would come here w my parents. Nostalgic vibes lol. FYI: they automatically charge for porridge/rice if u sit down to eat there. $3 a person.
Great place to get Chinese comfort food at a decent price. It's three dollars per person for unlimited pumpkin congee or rice, which is a great deal if you are hungry. They have a variety of different dishes. You can choose from such as eggplants, green beans, chicken thigh, bean cured or mustard green. Everything is salty, so it goes really well with the congee or rice. You order your food in the front first and then they bring it out to you if you are dining in they have special lunch seven days a week and service is great. They will refill your bowl as you eat, tea is also very good
We went to Lu's Garden for the first time for dinner. You order (both for takeout and dine-in) at the counter, where you can peruse the dishes cafeteria-style. We ordered three dishes (braised pork, squid, and stir fry spicy peppers) and got two servings of the porridge ($3 per person, but unlimited refills). The booths were comfy and service was attentive as they proactively offered us porridge refills. The dishes were all solid, especially the stir fry peppers which paired nicely with the porridge. We had enough leftovers for an additional meal at home. Many other dishes we didn't try looked well-cooked and tasty as well!

Free sweet potato porridge! Almost like fast food but can dine-in for free porridge. My mom been craving for it. And you can get refills on it too. I tried their xo sauce fried with green string beans and its so delicious and tasty! Must come again next time. read more

I love taiwanese porridge! Ordered the jellyfish, braised pork belly, bamboo shoots, and dried tofu strips and they paired great with the porridge. The porridge is standard with yam. Very fresh and delicious! Would definitely come back. read more

Just check-in this wonderful Chinese restaurant called Lu's Garden. This Restaurant specializes in sweet yam congee which was warm and smooth, and they providing variety of side dishes as well ; especially the eggplant and the pork with leeks-- they were flavorful and tasted like home made. We chose not to eat here as, to me, having to pay full adult price for my kids (ages 10 and 12, they are happa who won't eat most this stuff, despite my continued efforts) is money down the drain. WARMING LAMPS, NOT COOKED TO ORDER The food looks authentic enough. But it's all pre-cooked under warming lamps. Like Panda Express. The fried fish doesn't stay crisp long. right? PRICE - seems hefty that they expect customers to pay a premium set pre fixe price. It's not freshly cooked to order. Heat lamps keep some things ok, I suppose, but my husband said it most plainly: "This is just someone else's leftovers." - lunch prices make this a wee less expensive at $18-23 a person. That's still steep! Sure, it comes with free refillable rice porridge, but it's rice. Most Chinese places refill rice. It's not refillable gold bullions! - charging kids over age 7 full price does not work for us. I spoke with the counter staff in Chinese to understand the age definition. The staff stressed that we could not have some of our party on the pre fixed and the kids order à la carte. It was ALL must be in the set menu. This not-posted inflexible "kid price policy" killed our visit, so we left. Most restaurant kids meals target up to age 12. Show me an 8-year old who eats adult portions and set me right, please - I'll use it to show my kids with a heavy handed serving of Asian mom stress-guilt. Inspo them to eat more. For these prices, I can go to plenty of other prices in the vicinity, which is exactly what we did. Despite the heavy rain, we drove our big rowdy Taiwanese family party caravan to another restaurant. It was raining so heavily, I don't know who they think will be coming. 台灣小菜with 稀飯- yes please! And their 稀飯 has sweet potatoes in it. We love this place. Is it a bit pricey? Yes. Can I make this at home for much less? Yes. Can I make this much variety easily? Not really. Service is brusque and friendly. My inner New Yorker loves it. When you walk in, you order at the cafeteria-like counter, and if you are dining in, they will bring the foods you indicated to your table. I love their tomato egg, and whatever greens they have. Their huge slab of tofu is also fantastic, as is their grilled mackerel. This is a semi-regular place for us, can't wait to go back. There was so much to choose from in this area--at least 30 to 40 restaurants within a one-block radius. Finding a place to eat wasn't the issue; choosing one was the real challenge. We finally settled on Lu's, and I'm glad we did. They had everything we were looking for, which was obvious the moment we walked in the door. Lu's is cafeteria-style: you pick what you want and they bring it to your table. Everything we chose was delicious, from the chicken to the pork, along with the wide variety of vegetables. Just coming back to leave another five star review for my favorite place to eat. The people who work here are so nice and efficient. Everything is always super tasty and clean. The rice porridge with yams is nutritious and filling. Some of my S tier choices include: Chayote Bean curd skin Braised pork and egg Eggplant Green beans with chilis (perfect for a little kick mixed with the porridge) THE BABY SQUID!!!! Great Taiwanese food without bells and whistles. They are well known for free refills of the pumpkin congee when you dine in which goes well with their well seasoned dishes. For first timers: Enter on the deli side, indicate if you're taking to go or dining in. For either situation, you then choose your dishes. If taking to go, you pay and leave with your packed food. I really did not enjoy the system and service here unfortunately. 2 dishes with a small porridge added up $33. The lady was unfriendly, rude. They don't accept anything besides cash for a total under $25 which is illegal. I would not recommend anyone come here nor next time traveling in LA. read more
Located in a quaint plaza in San Gabriel, Lu's Garden is a cafeteria style restaurant with a menu for avid lovers of authentic Chinese cuisine. I came in expecting to sit down and be served but you actually have to order your food at the front before they bring your food to your assigned table. From there they continue to serve you. I believe each meal comes with your choice of steamed rice and/or porridge. I had the chicken, beef tripe, and egg soup. I found them all...okay? Nothing really stood out to me. I liked the egg soup the most out of all of them. The servers were kind, though. The craziest thing happened as I ate two fortune cookies and got the same fortune with the same numbers. Not sure what I'm supposed to get out of that or if they use the same fortune for every cookie. I don't think this is a place that I would drive through traffic for again, but I can see why others would love this place. read more

Rice that is cooked for a very long time that gets super soft. Porridge is bland so it pairs well with savory dishes.
