We gave it a shot when we first moved from the NASA area four years ago, so it was about time. I loved the fact they were open on Memorial Day, and they didn't seem to be too busy. Mostly golfers and their ilk. Our server was Kaitlyn, who was very fast. She reminded me of Mary Lou Retton. Very fast. Almost too fast? I asked a question about the amount of breading in the crab cake, and she said there was none. Seems unlikely, since crab cakes need a binder. I am intolerant of the gluten, so when she said the crab cakes had no binder, I was hesitant. I took the safe road and ordered the cucumber snacker and a boudin ball. My BF ordered a ribeye, and (because he thought he was super hungry), ordered chips and salsa as a starter. Kaitlyn brought out my wine and our chips and salsa straight away. The chips were very stale, the salsa was tasty but a little spicy for my taste. Everything arrived at our table at the same time, even though I ordered two apps as my meal. Kudos to Kaitlyn. The cucumbers were good, especially with the jalapeño ranch. No one can mess up a cucumber, but the jalapeño ranch was tasty. My boudin ball was meh. My BF ordered his ribeye medium temperature, and it arrived rare. Kaitlyn checked in on us a couple of minutes after the food arrived. He told her about the steak and she quickly whisked it away. ~5 minutes later, someone delivered the new steak. My BF enjoyed the new steak, baked potato and salad. When we visited four years ago, we felt rushed. I felt rushed this time as well. Obviously, Tia Juanita's is doing very well. You can't swing a rope without seeing another TJ's in SETX. It's probably just not our jam. I like a nice meal without feeling rushed. I also prefer to eat with a proper fork and knife. I would, however, like for the manager to respectfully respond to negative reviews. They seem to respond to positive reviews only.

Upon walking into the garden, my friend and I were immediately greeted by one of the volunteers. She gladly gave us a map of the garden and asked if were interested in seeing a free movie to learn about the history of the garden and asked if we were wanting to go on the free boat tour as well. We gladly said, yes and was shocked that they so many payless amenities. I thought to myself out of all the botanical gardens I've visited over the years, this was by far the less expensive. The movie was fascinating. It was held in this big modernized auditorium. We were the only ones in there. Once the movie started, the room got really dark. Mr. Stark, a native and local of Orange, TX was inspired by the 1933 movie, The Lost Horizon (which can be found on Tubi), but Shangri La translates into utopia and paradise, so he sought out to make an impression in the small city by creating a place people can enjoy nature on 252 acres. The selection of plants are natives, annuals, perennials, some tropical plants (located in the greenhouses). The boat tour was a real treat! We were given instructions to remain safe on the water vehicle and put on life jackets. The tour was held on Adams Bayou where we saw ospreys, Christmas lichen on the trees, houses off the bayou, cypress trees with their huge roots, moss hanging from the branches, and even the bayou was filled with debris and trash. It definitely felt like we in a swamp. The boat ride was peaceful as the tour guides gave explanation of what we viewed. After the tour, my friend and I walked around the park observing all the beauties around. There wasn't a lot of plants in bloom yet, but nevertheless, the air was crisp and fresh. Great outing. They even have a restaurant/cafe on site. Shangri La exceeded my expectations!

We paid $10 for a butterfly, fed it some oranges, and then released it. Wine from Free State Cellars was there, sandwichs and macarons were made by them, too. Fantastic! Now about this garden, it's beautiful. They have put a lot of work into it since Hurricane harvey... and are doing a great job in making it more lucious each year. LOVE this place

However the co owner Leah McMorris was very unprofessional, rude and seemed racists. Talking to the staff in such a horrible way in front of the guests, I felt bad for them and no way would I be working for someone speaking to me like that even if we where doing the same thing every week. Each occasion is different and you have to adjust. Paying money and not getting what was discussed is a nono. The wedding party should have been served along with the parents and elders. For Leah to outright state that they have to stand in line like every one else was not ok. Ive never been to a wedding where the wedding party was not served. Also the candles, that is a fire hazard and a liability. Someone's dressed almost caught fire had we not been paying attention. Leah needs to have a couple of classes on customer service and management what she displayed was not co owner behavior. She is going to run this beautiful establishment down with that type of behavior.
