Mikulov in South Moravia (Südmähren) is one of the prettiest towns in the Czech Republic. This is another one of the towns that was once totally Austrian in population, but which was assigned to Czechoslovakia after World War I. For centuries it was called Nikolsburg and not only was it a wine center, it was a religious center as well for both Christians and Jews. Today you can still see the synagogues and the impressive churches and mausoleums - especially the imposing classical mausoleum belonging to the Dietrichstein family. The castle on a hill in the very center of town is the star attraction but there are many other attractions and colorful old streets and squares to explore. A special walk for those in good shape is to hike up Holy Hill and visit the church of St. Sebastian. And if you get homesick for Austria fear not - Austria begins right at the town borders. read more
