Then I realized there were other parts of the building that weren't "store front". We usually come here to stock up on steaks, ribs or whatever meat they have on sale that week. If you're into raw food for your pooch they've got that covered too. Another thing I've noticed is their cashiers are very efficient, aka fast! Walmart and Superstore should send their cashiers here for training. If I really have to be picky, I'd have to say that this is not a place to bring your children. We can only come when one of us stays in the van with our young children. For one, their shopping carts are small. And secondly, this is a very busy place with limited floor space. Also the parking lot on the weekends is a zoo. But even with these "hindrances" we still manage to buy groceries here.

Thick cut, and I swear it loses less weight when it's cooked; not sure if this is because it's less fatty than regular commercial bacon or if that stuff is water chilled, but I'd say you're getting more bang for your buck in both quality and quantity. I think it clocks in at $8/lb. The breakfast sausages were a substitute for me when they were out of bacon on a recent visit. They have a fairly mild seasoning to them, and not quite that typical breakfast sausage flavour, which I am admittedly a sucker for. They're a bit more coarsely ground than most sausages, and could use a bit more fat added in as they are a bit on the dry side for a sausage.$7/lb. I picked up a batch of maple-cured English bacon on my last visit, which I'm looking forward to trying! Your more basic cuts of meat are fairly reasonably priced, but be ready to suffer some damage to your wallet if you're getting any of the high end cuts.

Beyond that the store is a mixture of exotic cheeses, excellent produce, a deli, health food aisles and the British butchery. This butchery is especially known for its Nova Scotia lamb, which is the best I've bought anywhere around here. The beef steaks are a close second. Needless to say, due to the nature of the products sold here, the prices are exorbitant.. I keep Pete's as a treat to go buy a few luxury food items if I haven't entirely blown my food budget for the month. While many of the items are quite unique, there are many food items that are..items which can be purchased at your regular grocery store for half the price (ie. many of the dairy products). I also think the space the store occupies is much too small... you constantly feel like you're in a traffic jam trying to navigate the narrowly jam packed aisles, and always a hair breadth away from knocking things over.. the store is so cramped, I picture knocking something over as having a domino effect.. dropped a bag of chips?...there goes the whole aisle. The check out staff are fast, friendly and on the ball with keeping registers open. I don't necessarily see this as good customer service, though... since the store is so cramped, if long lines were to form then customers in line to pay would take up half the retail space (I've seen this happen here more than once). The store is clean and well kept, and there is a really good variety of Russian groceries on the shelves, as well as some from Poland and Israel. There is also a frozen section including Russian ice cream and perogy dumplings, as well as a deli counter. The prices are good too, not too expensive. If you are wondering what to buy, I can recommend the Russian chocolates, which you can buy by the piece and are attractively wrapped in pretty papers. There is a whole wall devoted to Russian chocolates! Their baked goods and deli items also look delicious. They store has their own ovens and they do catering too. I understand it is hard to sell high-quality goods because it probably takes 4-6 months to ship them from Russia, but come on, how can you sell expired food, this is not Russia! All I can say is...WOW! Huge! Impressive! First off...it's on two floors. The first, where you enter is filled with huge bags of rice, over sized ceramic planters and a bazillion bamboo steamers in every size imaginable. Upstairs, well let's just say you could get lots for hours. It took me a half an hour to just check out all the beautiful blue & white traditional Chinese plates and serving dishes, the woks and other Asian cooking paraphernalia. I expected rows and rows ...and then more rows and rows of Chinese, Korean (and to my joy, Japanese) bottles and bags of sauces, spices, noodles, candies...the usual, but in much larger and more varied quantities than the other Asian markets I've visited in Halifax. What I didn't expect was fresh - you heard me - fresh bok choy, plump lemongrass, napa cabbage, kai lan and persimmons, among other fresh Asian vegetables. There were fridges and freezers filled with sticky buns, other Dim Sum dumplings, Chinese pepperoni (I love it) other Asian cured pork. The staff was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. So all those interesting and intriguing packages - like dried lily leaves, were explained, and how and when to use them. I didn't realize, until I was two blocks from home in the North End that this is the retail arm of of Ca Hoa Enterprises, importers and distributors of Asian fare. I pass their trucks every day and never gave it a thought. Things are different now though!
