Riverhead Beverage has steadily been growing as an awesome craft beer supplier for the East End of…read moreLong Island. Their growler station always has at least 5 different beers ready for fills, with a majority of those lines being connected to beers from local breweries. They have an extensive craft beer selection that nearly takes up half of the store. The selection is almost always changing, and what is in stock is constantly being updated. One of my favorite things about Riverhead Beverage is that they do a lot of leg work to get special one-off beers that would be difficult to find otherwise. Whenever they are able to lock down a case of a special collaboration (recently Sierra Nevada/Dogfish Head Life and Limb) or a limited production/release (Stone 15th Anniversary Escondidian Imperial Black IPA), they post about it on Facebook, letting you know when it's going to be in and how many bottles they have. They also occasionally run contests where they basically draw a name out of a hat and you win some beer related prize. Recent prizes have included a Wooden Corona Beach Chair, A Budweiser Weber Grill, and a Bud Light iPod Speaker Tower. And it costs nothing to enter the contest. There is nothing wrong with free stuff. Ever. My only criticism with Riverhead Beverage is there 22oz. bottle, or bomber, or 750mL bottle, selection is thin. There's about 4 full rows of shelves of 6-packs and only one row for bombers. I think criticism may even be too strong a word for it. My second favorite beverage distributor in Suffolk County.

We had the absolutely worst experience with Kevin from Riverhead Beverages…read more We should have known not to use them when we had to chase them just to get a response and quote for an event we were having, but tried to give Kevin the benefit of the doubt after he assured us everything would be great because he's been in the business for over 20 years. We asked for a 10am delivery. Kevin called the morning of and said they were running late and would be there at 10:30am. They did not show up until 11:15am (45 minutes later than the proposed late arrival). Our guests arrived at 11am. We checked the invoice and they didn't even have the house number on the invoice and that's why the drivers were late- yet no one called to ask for it. When I said our guests were already there and now waiting for the drinks to be setup Kevin's response was "I didn't think your guests would be there at 11am". Our guests had to tap one of the kegs to help out because the delivery guys were busy packing the cans in a cooler because they were left out in the sun of their pickup truck and arrived warm. There was not enough ice for the kegs or beverages so we had to call another distributor for help. When I called to ask for some type of compensation or refund Kevin was extremely rude. He asked me what I think my refund should be and I said $200. He proceeded to get annoyed and tell me I was crazy and said he'd refund for the ice- which we didn't even have enough of. When I told him I found this to be unprofessional he actually had the audacity to be rude and threatened to take back the kegs. I work in customer service and am very patient and understanding because these things happen. However, as a business owner you would think you would try to be polite and understanding then try to work with your client to find a solution rather than act out and be rude. Kevin was honestly one of the most unprofessional people I have ever worked with. Considering we paid in full upfront in full and were reassured we would not have any issues. I do not think it was too much to ask for to have the services we agreed upon and paid for to be fulfilled. I don't recommend Kevin's "business" Riverhead Beverage.

Best and funniest things just happened on the eve of my birthday. Give me a long Irene minute and…read moreyou can laugh at me. I pop into my favorite liquor store on the way home from Stop & Shop. (It's the place on Portion Rd across from the Farmingville Fire Dept. Near Cancos Tiles and Dunkin Donuts. You'll need to visit.) The owner makes me laugh when he explains why the door alarm is so loud. (If he's fallen asleep it will 100% wake him.) After admitting I purchased pre-made eggnog he was quick to find an appropriate bottle of cognac. (He was visibly horrified. Note that he carries a pre-made version on site. But one should really mix their own at home.) It might very well be a bottle of brandy in the kitchen. Something I nodded to while dreaming of tomorrow. There's a beef braciole I'm eager to try in the kitchen. My request for a Chianti was met with a solemn look. "But that's too dry. You never drink anything like that." He knows me well. I explain there will likely be some hard cheeses prior to the meal. (Which, yes, I already bought.) If my growing Buddha belly is correct, there will be a damning accompanying side of pasta (And bread. WITH BUTTER.). Shh. With a finger to his temple he briskly walks around the counter. And there he pauses, gently gesturing to a bottle of Anno Domini Cabernet Sauvignon. "This will be perfect. And I'm selling it at a reasonable price." Mind you, we never discuss price points when I visit. The joint is appropriately named "Best Price Wine & Liquors" for good cause. Unless I specify, "This is a gift, let's spend more." purchases are reasonable for daily (shut up, don't judge me) consumption. (No Mom, I'm not drinking that often. But if I win the Mega Millions all bets are off.) I'm sold and say, "Great! Can't wait to try it." As we're about to ring me up I mention how odd a mid-week birthday is. But that I had decided a nice glass - or two - of red wine was necessary to properly celebrate officially aging. Screech! All things stop. "It's your birthday tomorrow?!" I nod. "This is on me. Please accept it." Well hello sir! That is quite honestly the best surprise birthday gift to date. It was just so unexpected. There's no need for me to scrounge for a coupon to maybe get a free appetizer. This was easy. I'm stunned by the experience and can't quite express how happy the exchange has made me. Right, so I drive home. I unload the seventeen bags of rocks purchased at Stop & Shop. (Things like seltzer, ginger ale, and so on.) I'm finally ready to relax when I remember the eggnog. I mix some over ice and plop myself onto a stool. Yeah, that stool is older than I am and made of leather. As I sit one of the corners explodes under my weight. I'm still holding the rather large (shut up) glass of eggnog and determined to not spill. Onto the computer. Onto the carpet. Onto the keyboard. Oh, and heck my phone. With the grace of someone other than me, I do not spill. Anywhere. Somehow I didn't end up on the floor. Nor did I bruise my elbow on nearby furniture. Or break some random bone. Or miraculously knock the bottle of wine over. Wooot! [edit] What I failed to mention in this story is how many damn calories eggnog contains. I couldn't believe it when I read the label. So perhaps this was a warning. Am I listening? Uh, no. LOCAL LONG ISLAND TIP: Wine tastings are every Friday from 4pm to 7pm. Holler if you're ever interested in joining me. I have a new favorite thing to do at that time. :)
