If there's one phrase I'd use to describe this place, it's North Park Lite. Ma's connections to its parent franchise are obvious in the bowls they use to the fact that the paper on the siopao reads North Park. But where North Park has a rather extensive menu and brands itself a Chinese restaurant, Ma Chicken Mami House has a far simpler menu: siopao, mami, some rice meals and two dessert options. You won't find North Park's Prawn Dumplings here. Instead, you find things more familiar to the Filipino tongue: siomai, lumpiang shanghai, kikiam... that sort of thing. The mami too is far simpler than the usual Chinese restaurant fare. I'd say it's trying to emulate the menu of something you'd find in Chinatown.
As far as Ma Chicken Mami House is concerned, it's siopao and mami is pretty much on the okay side. Not exactly my go-to but I wouldn't say no if I've got a craving for siopao and mami. The flavors are alright, to start. The soup's a little light but it's pretty filling. But then again, that makes it work with the siopao even better. That siopao's pretty tasty, I've got to say. The sauce is nice and it's definitely not more-bun-than-meat which is definitely a good thing. And it's filling, that's the important bit. When paired with the lighter flavored mami, it makes for a pretty good meal. read more
