The coffee is fantastic! The pastries (from Pain D'Avignon) are fantastic! So why one star? The staff are awful. Zero interest in being there. Zero f's to give about customers. Slower than watching paint dry. Forget to make your order. Mosey about behind the counter doing *whatever* while the line is out the door. Unfriendly. Zero personality. Zero conversation. Appear angry. Contemptuous. Rude. Bizarrely, despite the number of complaints and comments about the staff here on Yelp, apparently nothing has been done about it. If they are staff - why is the owner not doing anything about them when they are clearly downgrading the business? If they are the owners....just wtf? This is such a cute little coffee shop. We were greeted with a smile when we walked in and our drink orders came out fast. We were looking for a good coffee place and found Macondo on our Map app and read the latest reviews here, and decided to give it a try. My husband ordered a latte which he said was very good. I ordered the Leche de Otoño latte with oat milk, this was AMAZING!! I will forever be thinking and dreaming about this latte. I'm so sad we never went back before heading home because I would have ordered a large. This drink is truly autumn in a cup, forget pumpkin spice (I said what i said!). My oldest had a Berry smoothie which she absolutely loved! We will definitely be back when we are visiting Mystic and the surrounding area. read more

Stopped here today for a pre-work coffee. It has such a classy and inviting atmosphere, with lots of plants! The baristas were very friendly. My cappuccino was strong (how I like it) and was nice and creamy with oat milk. There was plenty of seating, indoor and out. I also always appreciate when coffee shops have ceramic mugs to use while I sit down. I will definitely come back here! read more

I ordered a large coffee for 7 dollars, and got what would be a small at Dunkin' Donuts. The bagel I ordered was a bit overpriced too, but not as bad, at 3 dollars, but I also had to pay an extra dollar for cream cheese. The service was fine. read more

Can only speak to Macondo's drip coffee and Lattes. Best lattes in CT IMO! Barista knows his stuff and makes a phenomenal drink. Their drip coffee is freaking solid too. Great spot! Coffee Pedaler in New Haven has the best actual drip coffee if you love Light Roasts, but Macondo's lattes are way better. Nana's in Mystic makes a latte just shy of Macondo's greatness . We only stopped because they feature Essa Bagels from NYC....The staff, not sure if they all had a lobotomy but they were ridged and miserable. Macondo is an excellent place to get coffee, smoothies etc. For someone living close by, It was nice to see that they survived the pandemic. The challenges for businesses was real and I have no problem with increased prices to support their difficulties. Macondo also chose to "rebrand" their loyalty program to now exclude smoothies but not coffee (I would have spent over $100 with tax and feel that one free one isn't asking too much). Being told that the whole program was dissolved would have been more understandable than excluding smoothie drinkers. Oh well, it might seem trivial, however I still felt slighted. I won't be back but still wish them continued success. read more

I so want to give Macondo 5 glorious stories. The staff is awesome, the place is nice to hang out in and the bagels and pastries are two thumbs up and the coffee is the best around. The one issue I'm having is that the last few times I picked up toasted bagels with cream cheese the bagels were burnt. It's not a slight burn but a heavy burn which changes the flavor of the entire experience. Fix the the toaster and I'd gladly give 5 stars. read more

Very, very, very clean! The baristas were also very nice and accommodating. The coffee though, did not blow me out of the water. It is a little pricey. The el churro there is basically a wanna be horchata and the iced chai I can get better somewhere else. They sell glass straws there in which I purchased. Excellent and legit juice bar - not the fro yo Starbucks junk a latte stuff but the healthy oriented ones with fresh greens, fruits and add ins, etc. nice staff and super clean as viewed from the socially distant outside in for curbside pickup. I was recommended this cute coffee shop by my friend and it did not disappoint! It's literally sooooooo cute! The hot chocolate will run you $4 but boy oh boyyyyyyy is it yummy! There's so many little components that add to the charm of the cafe. The tables and set up which create a comfortable atmosphere to work. The art work around the walls and decor. And most impressively the process of their beans --- grown in Colombia, roasted in Brooklyn and sent to the shop. When I was there, there was a chalk board that listed the date sourced in Colombia was 10/3 and roasted in Brooklyn on 10/22 then shipped freshly to a Stonighton! I have been a regular customer at Macondo since their opening and they are by far the best coffee in the area. They serve Devoción which is farm fresh coffee from Colombia, which is then sent for roasting in Brooklyn, New York. The coffee beans go from "green to cup" in 10-30 days, and you can taste the difference. All of their espresso drinks are done to perfection. Their cappuccino is incredible, with the perfect amount of micro foam, unlike other coffee shops where there is a half inch of foam before the actual espresso. The employees are so personable and knowledgable about the coffee they serve. Every employee goes for training in New York City and it is evident that they all have a passion for coffee. On top of that, they are so friendly and kind to all of their customers. Every day when I walk in I am greeted with a warm hello and asked if I would like my usual. This is the kind of experience that you get from a local coffee shop. While I usually get a cappuccino, they started making cold brew this summer which is the best I've had. It is so rich and smooth, and very refreshing on hot days! Every experience that I have at Macondo has been positive. The owner is so passionate about her business and it is reflected in every experience I have there. We are so lucky to have coffee like this in our area! read more

Went with my mother for coffee and a protein shake. Was delicious. The barista let me design my own protein shake as well. Saw this open a few weeks ago & have been eager to try it. Looks like a neat little place inside, but I was underwhelmed. One guy working there- he was very nice but VERY slow. We got a hot chocolate & a latte & a scone. I was very excited about the hot chocolate because it looked wonderful as he made it, but you know what? It tasted like hot milk- very very plain & by taste I would never have guessed it was supposed to be a hot chocolate. The latte was fine, but not really better than you can get anywhere else. The scone was tasty but also kind of stale tasting- maybe it would have been better warm? I won't rush back, but if someone wants to stop there for coffee I probably won't complain either. read more

​This place is the real deal. I say this from the perspective of somebody who has raised coffee snobbery to an art form. I went in with low expectations, it is so rare to go into a coffee shop where the barista actually knows what they are doing. For example, at a well known coffee franchise, the "barista" pushes buttons to make your drink from lousy over-roasted beans. I was immediately intrigued that they post the harvest date of their coffee as well as the roast date, so I ordered a cappuccino. While I was paying for it I was expecting to hear the all-too-familiar "butchering" of the milk as it is being frothed. I'm very particular about frothing the milk. Properly done, frothing produces extremely small bubbles sometimes referred to as micro foam. This can only be achieved by incorporating air into the foam only at the beginning of the frothing process and not towards the end. When you hear the air being sucked into the foam towards the end of the process you know there will be giant bubbles and a complete foam disaster awaiting you. So I started asking some questions and it turns out the woman making the cappuccino really knew what she was doing. She gallantly stood up to my interrogation. It wasn't a full fledged waterboarding, but it was close. Each shot is ground to order so it hasn't been sitting around losing flavor and aroma. They aim for 30 pounds of pressure when tamping the ground coffee. She twisted the tamper at the end of the press to "polish" the puck. The shot is timed to come out neither too fast (sour), nor too slow (bitter) and they adjust the grind in order achieve the proper properly timed shot. The result? Gorgeous precision-poured microfoam and rich deep layers of coffee flavor served in an actual ceramic cup. The attention to detail, and properly sourced beans makes a difference. This is without a doubt the best cappuccino available in the area. read more

The coffee is fantastic and they have high standards about how it is prepared - HOWEVER I've been here about 20 times and the service is horrendous - slow and some of the employees are on the rude side. Went in today and ordered an espresso (I was the only customer there) - paid - and the employee just stood there - didn't say a thing (she literally said nothing and there were no other customers there). I asked "um can you maybe make my espresso?" and she told me someone else would be back to make it. I waited and waited and waited. Finally I asked her if she had an ETA and she finally went to find someone who could make my espresso. Espresso was served with a huffy attitude of "how dare you not wait for your order to be prepared on OUR timetable" - this is the last time I will go there.
