How can you resist going into a cafe called the Mad Hatter? Not me anyway and when you do in it's as good as the name. It's light, bright with comfortable seats, friendly, not too expensive with decent foo - all the other attributes that a decent cafe should have. The slightly elevated corner spot is a good place for watching the world go by on the Lisburn Road. Aside from the all day frys, already mentioned by reviewers, there is a menu of straightforward cafe food like lasagne, chips, toasties and paninis, along with various cakes and traybakes. Clearly a popular spot, where even at close to 4pm people were still tucking into chips and frys, proof (as if it was needed) that this is a real all day breakfast place, and a fine one too.

Ah the Mad Hatter fry - part of the staple diet of students in the surrounding area. This is a nice enough place and I've had more than my fair share of frys in here (see my Biddy Duffy's review), and I've never been disappointed. You'll see a lot of reviews about people going here to get a fry (not that it has a Michelin star for making frys or anything, it's just handy to a lot of people and does a good fry), but they do actually have a menu. I don't think I've ever even seen it though, because I always order a fry. There's an outdoor seating area if you get a bit of sunshine but a) we don't get much sunshine over here, and b) when we do get sunshine here you still wouldn't want to be seated outside with food because it'll get blown away (why is it never sunny AND still over here?). If you happen to be in this area in the morning and you're hungry (especially after a night of revelry), call in here for a fry.

The Mad Hatter is a fantastic little cafe just off the Lisburn Road on Eglantine Avenue. I often visit this place for my hangover Ulster Fry whenever I manage to wake up on this side of town (which is everyday now since I moved!). The best thing about this place are its frys. These range in size from the sensible to the ridiculous and you always find yourself wishing you had have gotten more. Opens from 8am to cater for those rushing off to work or those yet to go to bed who just need a bacon soda like, right now.

Lovely café with a very helpful and friendly staff. We went on a Sunday morning and found the service to be prompt and attentive. The brown bread toast with jam and butter was very good although the packages of jam were a little gelatinous for our liking. The pancakes with golden syrup were divine, however, the accompanying rashers were a tad too salty. Probably no fault of the restaurant; our American tongues are still adjusting to British-style bacon. The café Americano and the café latte (pictured) were excellent and the server offered to top off our empty glasses with their house coffee. Overall, this is a very friendly, tasty, and budget-friendly café. We will be back soon!

It was all bar snacks opposed to the actual dishes you see in the yelp pictures. However, I did end up enjoying the food nonetheless. We ordered the sweet chili stack fries which were really good and also the halloumi and cali fish tacos. I preferred the halloumi, my boyfriend preferred the fish. I got a passionfruit capirinha and my boyfriend got an apple cider, both were really good. Overall it was good, but if you're looking for something other than a burger or bar snacks, this isn't the place.

They were really funny and witty and helped us pick out items on the menu. We couldn't order from our phones because we didn't have a number that could receive sms messages to setup the account on our phones, which wasn't a big deal. My vegetarian friend got a veggie burger that he liked and the server said they had just added it to the menu that day. The fries were great and crispy, and everyone liked their sandwiches (some got burgers, some got chicken sandwiches).

The entrance is small, and across from some sort of loading bay or something. But worth stopping in. Once inside, the space opens up and is very welcoming. I ordered the green eggs on toast, and it was delicious (the sausages are an add-on, and in hindsight was unnecessary). The poach was perfect, and that green sauce is divine! But... I hope you brought some dental floss or a toothpick, because you will surely have embarrassing green bits stuck in your teeth otherwise. Top quality brekkie! The OJ tasted fresh with bits of pulp in it (although they do pour it from a jug in their fridge) and the latte is of a good quality. Not busy on a Monday morning. Staff friendly, and chatty with some of the delivery people, who I assume they see on a regular basis. If in Belfast for an extended period of time, would not hesitate to dine here again.

There was a great selection of savory and sweet. I had poached eggs on sourdough. My friend had the French Toast, and it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet. There was fuzzy stuff on the French toast that looked like asbestos or fiberglass. It was not, it was soft and sweet, but it sure looked odd. The poached eggs on sourdough with pesto was amazing. I also got a side of bacon. It was perfection. There is a cool little shop too. If I am back in Belfast, I'll be sure to stop back.

TRIGGER WARNING: this review contains "minimally invasive creme hole" and "generously sized nuts"…read more First of - an absolute hipster dream when it comes to decor. Whoever their graphic designer is, id hire him to...idk. Design my. Life. The donuts were the centre of attention - are my photo of the window display, which was eye catching and immediately had me salivating. They've managed well with COVID, but only one person in the store at a time (a wee cramped space honestly). Might be a long wait at a peak time. We had the place to ourselves however. Ok, donuts; we had A vanilla glazed - just a "control" for the taste science experiment. I have to say it was delicious and fresh, weighty and "doughy". A Boston Creme - the creme was SO GOOD. As a former donut baker, I was impressed with the minimally invasive "creme hole". Nothing was leaky, and the creme itself had a great consistency. The chocolate on top was dark, textured, and great accent visually and for the palate. A chocolate noh-tella: which for a vegan donut tasted surprisingly "unvegan". The donut was dense and full flavoured regardless of the filling; the filling was more viscous than Nutella and had generous sized nuts. A apple chai : yet to eat but apple filled, infused with chai. Looks delicious. Unlikely to be a gimmick. Donuts are so often gimmicks; a crappy donut with some bright colour slapped on it to give it appeal. But a real donut is good regardless of how dressed up it may be; and for that, the vanilla glazed takes the cake. Or yeast. Or dough. Do have a pop in. Looks like their coffee was pretty good as well, although didn't partake this time. The worker was kind and put up with my extensive donut chat, even my creme hole chat. Poor woman. Give it a shot!

One of the highlights of this place for me is the people-watching. Students and business types, parents and first-daters are all here and the buzz is enough to distract from the serving of a latte in a tall thin glass. This is a pet peeve, mainly because I can be a spilly lady, but to kill time and watch the world go by, I'll overlook it.
