My mother was in town and was curious about doing a tasting menu for the first time. We landed on Madcap because it had come highly recommended as a good place for a newbie, offered 10 courses, is a Michelin starred restaurant, and would be under $200 per person with taxes/gratuity. The restaurant is New American with strong flavors and influences of Japanese, Italian, and French. We found the food to have a broad appeal. The space is unassuming and rather casual for a fine dining experience. Again, I felt this made the evening approachable for someone new to tasting menu dining. The staff were courteous; however, at some point the service seemed rushed, despite not being sold out for the evening or running long. Our favorite bites of the evening were the jidori slow cooked egg, the pork bao, the tempura shrimp, and the duck confit. Dessert was not memorable and rather bland, but we were also full by that point. We did decide the bread course, in the middle of the tastings, is meant to fill you up, so you feel totally satisfied when you leave- eat the bread! At the end of our tasting, they brought the check and 2 clean menus and 2 boxes of candies- there were 3 of us. I didn't want to embarrass myself or them by asking why we received 2 vs 3, but it did cheapen the experience and left an unfavorable impression on being stingy at the end of an expensive meal. It also felt intentional vs an oversight. I wish I could give 4.5 stars. The reason I'm giving them 4 and not 5 stars is for the rushed service, and poor experience at the end of our meal. What a lovely dining experience!! I read a lot of reviews comparing this 1 Michelin star spot to the French Laundry and it definitely did not disappoint. The restaurant is small and cozy, so reservations definitely fill up fast. There's very limited parking in the lot, but there is also street parking. Overall, the flavors were creative yet delicious and the service was also very good. I also have to add that their plates and utensils are so nice LOL The tasting menu has a total of 10 courses - the first few are pretty small but I was so full by the end of the night. Here's a quick run down of what we ate: - Lobster Shot: great way to start the meal - it was rich in flavor and the lobster was balanced nicely from the sweetness of the carrot - Black Cod: so delicious - the cod was tender and fell apart at the touch of the fork. It was seasoned perfectly and tasted so good with the sushi rice and nori. Sad that it was only a bite - Cannoli with smoked trout roe, sea urchin - Sunchoke Soup with Tempura: I was surprised that this was one of the highlights of the meal. I have not tried sunchoke before but the pureed sunchoke soup was so delicious. The soup had a few drops of Vadouvan curry, sesame paste and small popping yuzu bits which actually tasted really good together. The shrimp tempura was fried well and was wrapped in a shiso leaf - Slow cooked egg: another very tasty dish! The egg was cooked perfectly with a runny inside and was topped with this rich and creamy mushroom foam. It was paired with a generously buttered piece of toast - Shima Aji: actual sashimi didn't have a strong taste but I liked the texture of it. It was wrapped with a jalapeño oil and came with blood orange slices and avocado and mango sauce droplets Mount Lassen Trout: the fish was seared well with a crispy skin. The cauliflower puree was yummy - English pea ravioli: I actually thought this one was just okay - Dry aged ribeye: Ribeye was cooked very well and came with a side of delicious puree, maitake mushrooms and vegs. The only disappointment was layered potato, which wasn't very crispy - Chocolate mousse cake: very rich and yummy and came with a side of hazelnut ice cream. I was a bit worried because it was actually a chocolate banana mousse cake and I am not a fan of banana in my desserts for the most part. Luckily the banana was just a thin layer in a cake and also in the cream at the top, so it had hints of banana bread, which I like! - Mignardise: (we actually ended up taking this home and eating it the next day) the canele was yummy! The chocolates were okay. I didn't care fo teh pate de fruit since I'm not a big gummy kind of person We came here shortly after they increased the prices from $110 to $125 (sad!) but I thought it was one of the more worth-it fine dining experiences I've had. Wow what a great place we loved our experience here such an exquisite meal. Everything from start to finish did not disappoint, everything was excellent. The staff were polite and attentive. The décor was simple with the slightly dimmed lights it was romantic and calming. This place is better than some 3 star Michelin Star Restaurant. Each course was unique, flavorful, and had wonderful textures you can tell it was well thought out and for the price you definitely can't beat that. Everything seemed like a surprise in a great way!! It was the dreaded birthday season again so I tried to drown my sorrows in fine dining. I made a reservation at Madcap through Yelp (super easy) and waited for the day to arrive. There is a small parking lot adjacent but spaces were hard to come by. We were seated upon arrival and the restaurant has a simple, but warm feeling. We chose the chef's tasting menu but declined the add-ons. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable and pacing was very good. The servers explained every course to us and added and removed plates and utensils efficiently. Overall the food quality and presentation were excellent. We thoroughly loved our experience here. We had a last minute sitter cancellation and had to bring our 3yo with us to dinner. Madcap was SO NICE about this and we really appreciate their flexibility. They gave him bread and even served him a roasted veggies plate and tried to plate it like a star. (Back story, we told the 3yo that the restaurant had "one star", so he was somehow looking forward to seeing an actual star on his plate. We honestly can't believe the restaurant tried to accommodate this. Super thankful. ) The food was wonderful. Our most loved/memorable ones: - slow cooked egg, candy cap mushroom spuma - butternut squash soup with fried shrimp - black cod in dashi - smoked trout roe, asian pear cloud - the beautiful dessert plate + extra sweets with canneles (3yo was so excited!!) What a cozy and nice restaurant in South Sanfrancisco. The commute is quiet far for us. It took me one and half hour. However, it didn't disappoint me to go this far. The food is amazing, the decoration is beautiful and the price is very reasonable compared to other Michelin restaurant. The only thing that I complain is my brother wagyu beef is too salty and he cannot finish it. I did mention to the waitress and she asked if we want her to ask the chef to remake it. We were full so we said thats fine. Later on she brough out extra dessert for make up the salty wagyu beef which makes me feel better. All in all, it is a great experience. I've been looking forward to my first visit to Madcap for a while!! I had an opportunity to visit with my family to celebrate. Most of the food flavors were quite solid, but service was really lacking. Some of our favorites from the tasting menu included: Corn Soup: The richness of the corn soup was incredible, and I loved the little balls of ayu flavor in it too. Slow Cooked Egg with Mushroom Spuma: This was another dish that we really enjoyed. The egg was smooth, and the mushroom spuma gave it a nice flavor as well. Ora King Salmon: The king salmon was perfectly cooked. It was perfectly tender. The ravioli it was served with as well had a great pairing. Overall, I loved the umami flavor in this dish. Dry Aged Flannery Ribeye: I wish the portion size of the ribeye was larger as it was really delicious! The ribeye was perfectly cooked to a medium-rare. The meat was super tender and rich in flavor. Service was really where things fell through at Madcap. Our server repeatedly fumbled through his explanation of the dishes. He never refilled our water, spilled wine with his pours, and many other aspects of service I'd expect at a Michelin star restaurant were left behind. The server dropped our utensils after picking it up a few times, and a knife dropped heavily onto the table after they picked up a plate. Overall, the food and flavors were quite good. I really appreciated the Asian flavors and inspiration in the dishes. The plating was unfortunately quite inconsistent, and service was very disappointing for a nice restaurant let alone what I'd expect from a Michelin star restaurant. read more

Came here in August 2021, and I STILL think about the dishes more than half a year later. It was such a great experience, like being lovingly pampered, but with food! Be prepared to savor everything. Being a fancy restaurant, each portion is complex but TINY. The first 2-3 dishes, especially, were almost frustrating to eat b/c they were delicious but there was barely enough for a full bite. The tune appetizer was the size of a 1cm cube. So do watch out for hangry emotions! Nevertheless, the courses build up in terms of their substantial-ness (more fat, more savory in the later dishes), and by Dish #7 I was feeling quite full (although I'm also a fairly petite woman, and I get full easily). It's a shame b/c I ate my dessert (the last dish) but was too full to fully enjoy it. The only tip I can think of is GET THE WAGYU add-on!!! It's what dreams are made of. It MELTS on the tongue, and the fatty beef flavor is the most incredible gustatory joy I've ever experienced. It's transcendent. The next day, we immediately went to Costco to buy their Wagyu steak to try and replicate the experience. It was good, but nowhere near that magic that Madcap pulled. I know it's a "fancy" restaurant, but it didn't feel stuffy at all. It felt trendy and fairly friendly. I recommend dressing up just a bit, and just leave your worries behind and enjoy two hours of tasting! The flavors were delicate and complex, and the presentation was beautifully whimsical. What a "hidden gem" in Marin! We dined here last night to celebrate a birthday & the food was spectacular. It was so good & I can't wait to have another excuse to come back & try a different season's menu. The first three dishes were smaller appetizers & leaned toward the creative spectrum (clam shot, asian pear foam over trout roe & tuna, trio of a curry bite, fish, & konbu). All were good & the asian pear foam was interesting, but the clam shot was the winner here! We also got the caviar + abalone supplement, which was a nice treat, but didn't blow us away. From there, it was on to the 6 savory courses. Since the appetizers were pretty small, I was a bit worried that the next dishes would also be small, so was relieved that each of the next courses had more than a couple bites to linger over & savor each dish! It's so hard to pick from among the 6 for favorites (I really loved all of them!!!), but some standouts were anything that included a broth, like the somen noodles or salmon. We picked up our bowls to drink every bit of broth -- this is a sign of respect to the chef, right?? Each piece of protein (salmon, scallop, shortrib, ribeye) was cooked to perfection with a beautiful crispy crust. The veggie sides also went through the same attention to detail, with tiny cross hatches on the roasted turnips, lots of purees, & daikon/radishes/potatoes that I swear were all sliced to 1mm exactly. I also really loved the slow cooked egg dish, which comes with a piece of buttered toast. SO GOOD & really takes you back to childhood or something, but fancy (sorry for the artistic expression, but its true!). I'm always skeptical about desserts at nice restaurants, but of course Madcap served an amazing hazelnut chocolate cake. There were two layers of thin crispy wafer under the chocolate mousse, which made the dessert stand out & the orange vanilla ice cream was a nice side too. Of course, the extra post-dessert of canelle, chocolates, & pates de fruit were also appreciated! My tip for all of you: The restaurant usually has an a5 wagyu add-on, but they get their a5 wagyu deliveries on Thursdays & can run out before the week is over. If you're gunning for that a5 wagyu & dont want to be disappointed, make sure your reservation is on Thursday or shortly thereafter! I really wanted to get this add-on, but because we dined on Wednesday, they had already run out by the weekend. read more

It's 10 courses meal from the chef that used to work at French laundry, he sure use a lot of Japanese influence on the dishes. And seasonal ingredients Let's go through all the details - clam shot is nice and warm with a hint of thyme - black cod is cook nicely but the seaweed not crispy and rice a bit mushy - this artichoke and sea urchin is great!!! - wagyu caviar ayu supplement dish not impressed - the bread and butter is better than the spruce - shrimp hasami is great but the somen broth VERY salty - the egg is cook perfectly with a warm sesame toast but it was oily and rich - shima aji with kumquat kosho very good - the trout dish is good all the components but again the dashi broth is on the salty side - duck tortellini is ok but the truffle sauce is good - steak dish is good cooked perfectly and also the vegetables - dessert disappointed for a Michelin star restaurant - petite four But overall is good with this price! The French Laundry but far better value (a third of the price!). The owner used to work at TFL, so he pretty much knows all the trade secrets. Not that anything surrounding TFL is really a secret because Thomas Keller published all the recipes in his cookbook. Good luck trying to cook some of those really intricate recipes though. My favorite traditional course: the butternut squash soup with apples, olive bread, and butter. That bread was soooo good and the soup hit the spot in this chilly Fall weather. The only truly hearty and filling course...every one of the other nine courses was tinier than tiny. My favorite innovative course: the Asian pear cloud (or spuma/foam) with pomegranate. So light and lovely. I could float away on that delicious cloud :-). I liked it more than the dessert course! The only ugly thing was the art. Parrots behind cage bars. Really very disturbing for this vegetarian. I tried not to look at any of the art (the artist must be troubled). Not the most wholesome art for a family holiday like Thanksgiving. While researching places to go for my birthday, I came across Madcap and was intrigued by its Michelin starred French/Japanese approach to dining. The interior of Madcap is dimly lit and provides an intimate dining experience along with fantastic service. The food was a great value with about 10 courses for $125 (supplement not included). As far as which courses were the best, all of the courses were great but I particularly enjoyed the Black cod with morel mushrooms, slow cooked egg with pine nuts, and the mount lassen trout. If you're up for splurging a bit more and it is available, I would highly recommend going for the hokkaido wagyu beef supplement ( $25). The beef was extremely tender and was accompanied with a fried fish filet and peach garnish that complimented the "melt in your mouth" beef well. The overall experience was fantastic and I would recommend Madcap if you're looking for a foray into Michelin dining that won't break the bank. read more

UPDATE: a few hours after posting this I received a long nasty private message. Attached. I'd like to preface this review with the fact that I've dined at close to 100 Michelin starred restaurants across the world (since I travel quite a bit for work). I also try to avoid leaving bad reviews since front of house is usually apologetic and understanding. Well, unfortunately that's not even close to the case at Madcap. This restaurant is BY FAR the worst experience I've ever had at a Michelin star. Let's see: 1. The temp was over 100 degrees today and there's no umbrellas (or anything really) to block the sun out. Restaurants charging a quarter the price of this place all manage to have umbrellas. Hell, even fast food places have umbrellas! 2. Table is incredibly wobbly. Had to ask multiple times for them to fix it. Why couldn't they have fixed it before seating us? Too hard I guess. 3. Duck is over cooked/well done. I've never seen a place serve duck this way. Usually it's medium rare. Any place that's half decent will ask you ahead of time "we serve the duck x way, is that ok with you?" Nope, not here. 4. While we're sitting at our table (on a sidewalk mind you), we watch as another ""patron"" gets out of her car with no mask, walks right past us only 2-3 feet away, and is seated with another group at a table. 5. After baking in the heat for an hour, we try to get the attention of the staff since we'd like to leave. Nope, no luck. Eventually we had to just stand up. Must be challenging to manage 3 tables (that's including us). 6. Ask to take the dessert to go, the staff are so incompetent they don't even include forks. Should I eat your dessert with my hands like an animal? When I came back to get forks they don't even apologize for forgetting. I'm not local! I've come from SF since I was excited to try this place. 7. While leaving, my boyfriend says that the duck was over cooked (mine) and inconsistent (his). At this point I'm hoping we get an apology and we can all move on from this. But no...no apology, nothing. There was one positive to all of this: the appetizer was great. read more

This was going to be a five star experience, everything was perfect, everyone was professional friendly, the chef is obviously making very delicious food, executing everything with precision and technique. The servers were friendly and I liked them, I like the place, I like the atmosphere. Even the table setting is really nice. So why four stars? I was celebrating my birthday here with my friend who nicely took me to a tasting menu for the first time. NO ONE IN the restaurant said happy birthday to me. I wasn't expecting any sort of dessert or anything, but literally no one said happy birthday to me. I went to two more Michelin and one non Michelin restaurant the same week and they acknowledged my birthday. Made sure to say it when I enter and when I leave. I suggest to not celebrate any event at this restaurant. It was so disappointing to not have one person say happy birthday to me. With that said apart from that everything was great. Ambience 5/5: Elegant, romantic, the table setting was neat. Looks like a warm fancy French place. Food 5/5: The whole menu was delicious, pretty. I was very impressed. The menu is worth every penny. They were very accommodating in regards to my dietary restrictions. The substitution was fair, couldn't eat trout so they substituted to a branzino for me, the piece was a little tinier compared to the trout though, but no complaints. Unlike the other place "AHEM BIRDSONG" who substituted my fish and meat with veggies. Most impressed with the cannoli, somen noodles, and my wagyu (get the subsitution) the wagyu was better than the ribeye. Dish that wasn't as good was the shima aji, the sauce did not pair well with the fish the red sauce, my friend said the sauce that they previously use for this dish was better. One more thing is that in my dietary restriction and I told the waiter I cannot eat cheese. They forgot about that and served me the duck tortellini they took off the cheese on top but inside still has it, I told them I can deal with it, but I ended up giving to my friend after one of the tortellini. I was a little sad, but at least they switched out my trout with another fish :) Drinks 5/5: Drinks were delicious, and prices are insanely cheap, I love it. Would they also have ice wine!! I love ice wine. Service 4/5: Perfect and informative, nice conversation, one point off for no one acknowledging my bday. We're just beginning to eat indoors since we're fully vaccinated. Went here to celebrate. (Their staff is fully vaccinated and we felt very safe in our spacious booth despite no open window near us.) I'm new to Marin and find most of the restaurants less ambitious/interesting than SF. MadCap holds its own. Inventive and well done. Professional and warm service. Madcap restaurant is a pretentious restaurant . Everything is very difficult with it. We had a gift card, but in order to find out how much was on the card, I had to drive to the restaurant so the manager could tell me. Then they make you pay a $100 deposit for a resrvation, even though they also have your credit card. Unfortunately I got covid the day before our dinner reservation, so we called and cancelled. Madcap won't refund the deposit of $100 because their policy is that if you cancel within 48 hours of the reservation, and they cannot rebook the table for two, they'll keep your deposit. In addition the first time we went there, my wife got sick from something she had for dinner. We will NEVER go back. Snooty as can be. read more

TL;DR: Non pretentious, upscale food in a casual environment, clever dishes, with generous portions. I haven't had this kind of a good experience in a very long time. Great meal! We went for a birthday dinner. -- Service -- I think the meal would be more enjoyable with a more professional service. It's not that the service is bad, but that it's not as elevated as the food. The face that it's not stuffy and doesn't have bells and whistles is good, but I would have enjoyed the food more if the servers would tell me the story of it, and inspiration of it. -- Food -- We took the prix fixe menu, and tried all the variations. Halibut croquet, over coconut-lime Thai sauce: A Thai-Spanish fusion dish, well made (the croquet is fun) + creative thinking went into making a Thai fish dish into a Spanish one. Great! Feuille de brick with ricotta and apples: another delicious bite. The cheese went well with the apples. Aji: The dish was plated like little fish that are swimming in the ocean. Small finger lime on top of the fish made it so the fish was always well seasoned, and also fun to bite - because it would explode with lime in your mouth. Bread: Fresh out of the oven, with good butter Trout: Skin a tad too salty. Fish itself is great, lots of flavor. The broth is very good! Tortellini: Duck confit tortellini is a great idea. Well made, since it's so soft - and a creative way to combine the duck leg in the meal. Every bite was either soft (confit) or mushroom-y. Loved it. Very good broth. Duck breast: The only bad dish. Duck wasn't made sous-vide, which means the ends were dry. I enjoyed the creamy sauce, the fruit, and the apple butter. It's a big portion. It didn't combine well with the rest of the menu. Black cod: Almost like a black cod in miso deconstructed. An asian dish transformed into the french cuisine - very light flavors, with a light broth. Fish was well made, and I enjoyed the miso flavors. I believe the the mushrooms and cauliflower weren't integrated enough in the dish, but otherwise it was very good. Also, like the duck dish, it didn't combine well with the rest of the menu, due to the very light flavors. Maybe if a palette cleanser was offered between this and the previous course, it would have been better. Poached pear Panna Cotta: a take on poached pear with wine. I believe the sorbet was of grapes. Great execution. Delicious. Lime (i think) sponge cake + green tea ice cream: the cake is very surprising. You don't expect something to be so small and delicate, but also soft. It's a good cake. The ice cream is also good, but i don't think it's a good match for the cake. Neither of them were too sweet, which is good. Thumbs up for the cake. Mignardise: Great canele! Fresh and well made. This place is an amazing find. Its a small hole in the wall that serves amazing fine dining experience in a casual setting.found it on Yelp, and would highly recommend for those who want a food adventure. It's a multi (9 ?) course meal, and has amazing flavor. I was pretty impressed by almost all the dishes, and we even got seconds on one since we asked. The menu can be a bit pricey at ~110 before tax and tip but it's totally worth it if you can do it. Would go again. One note - may spend 2 hours due to multi course meal nature read more

Disappointed in Madcap. I had reservations to come here for my birthday, but tested positive for COVID and could no longer make it. They were unwilling to let us use our deposit towards a rescheduled date. We tried to reschedule 48H in advance per their policy, but couldn't get a hold of anyone for our Tuesday reservation as they are closed Sunday and Monday. By the time we were able to get a hold of them on Tuesday, it was obviously past their reschedule threshold. We lost our deposit with no option to use it for a rescheduled booking. Their unwillingness to accommodate plus their increase in prices as of Mar 1 are disappointing. I'll be taking my business elsewhere to somewhere that has some compassion and hospitality. It's a shame because I really wanted to try this restaurant. read more

How has it taken me so long to finally get to Madcap? Two of us went for dinner and the combination of a talented chef, wonderful service and cozy atmosphere was magic. The chef's menu being the one choice made decision making easy- the entire menu is included with one option of the caviar course. Each small course was presented beautifully and explained in turn and I fully enjoyed the incredible flavor adventure the entire experience provided. Gentle easy timing of the courses was truly appreciated, and the individual course sizes and number was just right. Presentation on specialized ceramics was an elegant touch that framed the beautiful offerings. Though a high end restaurant the prices are incredibly reasonable for this level of restaurant. The wine list was very nicely curated and offered special bottles at many price points. I'll definitely be back. read more

I had been prepped on what to expect at this restaurant and so I was delighted at the presentation of each dish. I must say that my curated dining experiences at other restaurants did leave me wanting this experience to be a bit more wordy, yet words delivered slower, in expressing the details of my dish to me. WOW! If I could give this place 100 out of 5 stars, I would. I'm blown away after my dining experience here--I have found my favorite Michelin star restaurant to date. I didn't know what to expect since I made this reservation only about 2 weeks in advance and for a Saturday time! Was it going to be bad because reservations were so easy to make? We had a 5:30pm reservation, which was perfect for us (though could be considered pretty early for others lol) and we were out the door by 7:30pm. And we were beyond stuffed! I loved every single thing on the tasting menu, but I have to give a special shout out to the steamed egg dish. It was one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth, period. The egg was perfectly cooked with a runny yolk and the mushroom foam on top...absolutely to die for. My second favorite thing was the carrot shooter with lobster essence, which was the very first course in the tasting. This doesn't sound like it will blow your mind but I could not stop thinking about it! It was first on the tasting menu! What an amazing start. The next thing I must comment on is their service. This is a Michelin star restaurant BUT you don't get the stoic, dry and stuffy vibe that some places have. All the staff here is friendly and relatable! They're still very professional but they just do it with extra smiles :) I cannot wait for the next occasion so I have an excuse to come here again. read more
