This restaurant has plenty of parking, and I think very nice looking inside. Decorated beautifully for the holidays. The staff are pleasant and accommodating. I was taken there for a birthday dinner, food was good. The reason for the lower ratings is due to them allowing others to bring in A Bluetooth speaker to their table, allowing them to play it so loud that we really could no longer enjoy our dinner and speak. Having to compete with a light up speaker just to speak wasn't worth it to us. We decided to really laugh about it, what else could we do. We knew it was time to leave, and continue somewhere else where we could hear each other. If we wanted a place with entertainment, we would have chosen one. Not sure if anyone else's ever had this experience there? The owners and staff allowed it to happen, so I'm assuming it wasn't the first time. Hope others enjoy their night better than I did. I went here on a date a few weeks back, and it was a week night so it was quiet and had only a few other patrons, Service was slow, but my date was sweet so I didn't mind. ALSO I live within walking distance so we didn't have to deal with their parking lot. The food was ok, but nothing spectacular.. ROUND 2: I didn't think of how slow the service was when I made a reservation for a Saturday dinner with my mom and aunt before going to a show at PPAC. Our reservation was at 5, I got there on time and was immediately seated, my aunt and mom were running a bit late, so I sat waiting. They got there 10 minutes after the reservation and joined me at the table (which was oddly and uncomfortably placed against a beam) an additional 5 minutes went by without ANYONE checking on us. Keep in mind, that means I had been sitting there for 15 minutes without a waitress even asking if I'd like a drink while I wait. We ended up standing up and walking out, no one even seemed to notice. AND to top that off, their parking lot was extremely unorganized and we almost got hit twice on our way out, while following usual traffic laws. Came here during restaurant week for lunch. They actually serve lunch at Al's place. Seemed like most of the people there were regulars. Got the chourico a Madeira and chicken Mozambique. The chorizos were good although a little spicy. The chicken Mozambique was good as well although the sauce tasted a bit like buffalo sauce. Overall ton of food for 16$ and is a great deal. Came in to celebrate a friends 25th birthday, what a mistake. Our water glasses and bread plates were dirty. When our water pitcher needed refilling, the server instead of grabbing the pitched by the handle the sanitary way, they grabbed it with their dirty hands by the top of the pitcher where the water pours out. Gross. We were a decent sized party, one dish came out 45 mins before the rest of us got our plates. Had to watch one of our friends eat alone and once our food came she had nothing to eat. Sad. When the rest of the food came, half of it needed to be sent back due to cold temperature and not properly cooked meat. Once the corrected food came back, one plate was still wrong and the cold food had clearly been zapped. All in all it took over an hour to receive our food after ordering. After having to ask our server multiple times to get their manager, we finally saw them flag the manager down and ask him to come over to us. The manager made side eyes to our table for about 5 mins circling around the dining room, so weird. He finally started walking in our direction and in passing of our table he very abruptly blurted out, "HEY how's your FOOD!" He ran away before we got the chance to address our concerns. Cmon! We all felt sick after being home for a few hours. I can only imagine what their kitchen looks like based off our glasses and unsanitary server. Highly recommend staying away. Came with a friend tonight and we were seated right away. They had a party going in the hall upstairs, so the place had loud music, but we didn't mind that so much. Our waiter came with bread and olives, and started taking our orders right away, which was good. We decided to try the appetizer special, which was a calamari Mozambique and it was delicious. I could have eaten a larger portion of that for my entree and been very satisfied because the rings were perfectly cooked, with just a touch of heat from the garlic and peppers. The sauce was so rich and yummy, as we sopped it up with the crusty Portuguese rolls. We both ordered the special entree, which was a combo of sirloin steak tips, shrimp, and chorizo, served in a Madeira wine and mushroom cream sauce. This was served with yellow rice, roasted potatoes, and veggies. Everything about the dish was good, even the portion size. The steak was cooked perfect and tender. The chorizo was lean and flavorful. The shrimp was good but it wasn't peeled, which made it messy to eat. But the best thing about the whole dish, was the Mediera cream sauce. It was so darn good, I could drink that straight from a bottle! This is an entree that I wish they had on their regular menu. Even though it's very rich, I think it would be quite popular. As for the prices, the appetizer was about $9.99, and the entree was about $19.99. Overall, the atmosphere and the service were good, while the food was great. I will be back again. read more

We stumbled upon Madiera's via Yelp search after being unable to get in to another Portuguese restaurant in East Providence. What luck! The place is an old fashioned family friendly gem. Lots of locals and regulars and we were the only table around us not speaking Portuguese. Upstairs were two birthday parties with a live band playing dance tunes and Portuguese classics. The place was huge and boisterous and you could tell everyone there was having a great time--us too! Since we don't get much Portuguese food in Philly we ordered a lot and were not disappointed at all. Started with caldo verde soup.The broth was pureed potato, the kale sliced into fine slivers. Moved on to hot appetizers: chourico served sliced with hot peppers tiny olives in a Madiera sauce--a delicious variation on the flambeed chourico I've had before. Steamed little necks in white wine garlic sauce. Entree was grilled bacalhau at the waiter's suggestion (I couldn't decide between that, the fried salt cod variation, or my standby pork and clams). Great Choice! Charred outside, flaky moist fish covered in sauteed onions, garlic, more tiny olives in an olive oil sauce. Yes more delicious dipping--it was a two bread basket night.. We were stuffed but when my daughter saw rice pudding on the dessert menu we made some room. And then a little more because I wanted to try the bean pudding which, true to our waiter's description, was really more like a tart with a base made from sweetened, pureed canellini beans. Cut the sweetness with a galao--espresso with warmed milk. All around great food, great atmosphere. Owner came by each table to welcome everyone and inquire about our food. I come from New Bedford, where Portuguese food is a specialty. My grandmother is from Madeira, so this cuisine is what I grew up on. Madeira restaurant does not disappoint. The ambience is great from fine dining on one side, bar style on the other side (typical Portuguese restaurant set up), however Madeira has even more to offer. Beautiful outdoor seating, you have to see it for yourself. The service is exceptional. Maria was our waitress outside tonight and she was fantastic. One of the best servers I've had. Acute food poisoning! I'm in the emergency room drinking a bottle of chalk as they are sticking pads on my chest to monitor my heart. A half a day I spent in the E.R. From eating at Madeira. I have been going there with my family for years. I brought my Mom for lunch that day and I ordered lombinos n brasos... Thin pork chops with the usual thin sliced potatoes and broccoli crowns. I took one bite of pork and my lips, throat, and chest started to burn. I felt like I was going to die. I told the waitress, paid my tab and drove to the E.R. I had to call the restaurant to find out what they put in the food and there wasn't anything I haven't had a hundred times. Red pepper flakes, Red Devil hot sauce, garlic... Something else must have made its way into my food. I thought maybe soap or something. No sooner did the food go down, and everything started to burn. I never got a correspondence from them. They never followed up with me. No "how are you" or "sorry we poisoned you" nothing. I never ate there again. We used to get pork and little necks, baked stuffed shrimp, the tenderloin on a stick and the pork chops. None of it was bad, but I have a little rule on not going back to restaurants that put me in the hospital. I'm guessing it has been four or five years. I'm looking to try a new place called Faial up where my friend lives in Smithfield. read more

The char rendered from the flambed sausage was cripsy and added a wonderful smokiness to the meat. SO GOOD! Caldo Verde - Kale, chourico & potato broth soup (3.5 Stars) Hearty soup. If you don't like the taste of dark greens you might not enjoy this dish. A tad too heavy on the salt. Would be wonderful on a cold night. Entree - Espetada `a Madeirense Madeira style shish-ka-bob served with rice, Portuguese fries & seasonal vegetables (4.5 Stars) Cooked medium-rare the beef, it was perfectly marinated. Served with on the skewer and proped up on the table with its own stand, the dish is grand and would have your neighbors wishing they ordered what you did! Sides were ok, but the main attraction is the meat. Carne de Porco Alentejana Marinated pork with roasted potatoes & littlenecks (5 Stars) HUGE ORDER! Wow. The pork was very tender and the wine and seasoning infused in the dish like it was cooked down for hours. There is a hint of spice to the dish which I loved. The littleneck clams were definitely not 'little,' was surprsed with the generous serving. Loved that the food was hot, may be because of their made-to-order policy. Between the two of us we had more than half of our food leftover. We ended up packing it to go and had it the next day, and, yes, it was still good. The place is a huge, multi-floor, peach-colored, many-roomed complex. We sat in the corner of what I assume is the main dining room, but there was also a bar and outdoor seating area on the other side of the restaurant that can handle even the planet's most popular Portugese person's party with panache (alliteration is fun!). I think our order encompassed the highlights of Portugese cuisine (although no goat). To start, we got a dozen littleneck clams on the half-shell, an order of littlenecks baked in a garlic, olive oil and white wine sauce, plus a massive piece of flaming chorizo. The littlenecks were fresh and briny, while the baked ones were eaten almost instantly. The charred exterior of the chorizo provided a nice counterpoint the meaty, slightly spicy interior. All of this was washed down with sangria, making for a very good start to our meal. Each of our mains were generously portioned. I got the "Paelha A Valenciana" (pictured above). The saffron rice was topped with copious shrimp, mussels, squid, crab, fish, chorizo and pork (plus a lobster tail). There was so much that, even shared, we could barely finish half. My brother got the "Espetade A Albertino I," a 20oz. sirloin served on a massive skewer. He ordered itmedium rare, but it looks closer to medium. Either way, it was a nice piece of steak. My mom got the "Gambas Recheadas," which were shrimp with a seafood stuffing. I only had a bite, but it was very good, tasting (and looking) like there was sweet potatoes in the stuffing. Yet, when we asked about it, our friendly waiter looked at us like we were nuts. Either way, this is a good dish and worth trying. Finally, my dad got "Carne de Porco Alentejana," or marinated pork with roasted potatoes and littlenecks. Very flavorful, with tender pieces of pork, but also extremely heavy. If you're craving Portugese food in the Providence area, Madeira is definitely worth checking out (although I hear that the closer you get to Fall River, Mass., the better the Portugese food). read more

Really loved the whole experience. We were with foodie friends and had a fantastic server who is actually a school teacher working for the summer. She had been a customer for years, so she described the food, sauces and preparation to us in a passionate way. We were seated in the bar side of the restaurant which overlooks the outside terrace. Pleasant and not too loud. They start you off with some wonderful bread and olives. We started with mussels and chorizo. What a presentation on the sausage! It was brought to our table flaming and was soooo good. The mussels were a special that night and were perfectly done with a wonderful sauce. The server recommended a white Portuguese wine that proved to be a very pleasant surprise. Kind of effervescent on your tongue yet not quite sparkling. Bright, crisp, refreshing and a perfect paring for my meal. The dishes we selected were Paella, Carne de Porco Alentejana (Pork & Potatoes in a killer sauce), Espetada `a Albertino II ~ House Specialty (the coolest and best tasting shish kabob you've ever seen or tasted), and Bife `a Casa (Sirloin steak topped with ham and a fried egg). All were tremendous in both quantity and quality. The Paella was different than I was accustomed to in that it had a wonderful garlicky sauce mixed into it making it delightful. The pork and potatoes were cooked to perfection and the sauce made you want to pick up the plate and drink it. The presentation of the filet is just something you have to see for yourself and the meat was so tasty and tender! My husband said his sirloin with the ham and egg were amazing, but he ate it so fast and didn't share, so we have to take his word for it. The deserts were equally wonderful. I highly recommend the bean pudding. It's not pudding at all, it's cake-like. The others were very good, but the bean pudding was the winner at the table. The sauces are the secret in this wonderful establishment. The food is very good, the atmosphere may have been made a little better by having great friends with us and the service was great. I went here with my husband and son for dinner and the service was awful. We sat and ordered a pitcher of sangria, 2 steak dishes and the surf and turf. The waiter (Ernesto) never came by to see how the food was. We never had our water glasses refilled. My son was never asked if he wanted a refill of his soda. The waiter came by when we finished and just took the dishes. He didn't ask if we wanted the food wrapped to go. He asked if we wanted desert (which we didn't) and said he would bring the check. 20+ minutes pass and he brings the check. The crazy thing is I see the waiter chit chatting away with other guests. Bringing them to go containers and bagging it for them. Could it be that we weren't Portuguese? My son is and I was married to a Portuguese man for over 10 years. My current husband is Dominican. I wonder if we received awful service due to this. The food was good...this is the only reason for the 1 star. We were supposed to go to the Riviera. Should of gone there instead. Imagine that Maderia is authentic Portuguese, down to the embarrasing drunk in-laws. Finally made it to East Prov's Madeira to throw down with an honest-to-goodness plate of bacalao. Was surprised to see a packed parking lot, with music thumping from inside. Ends up, there is a ballroom upstairs, where we presume (from the emanating Portuguese pop) a wedding reception was taking place. Was seated downstairs, which was loud (from the wedding), and cold (it was July!). Ordered the bacalao done fried, accepting the waiter's suggestion that I substitute for boiled potatoes. Good choice, as the dish came swimming in olive oil and garlic. Good olive oil and garlic, but definitely too much for thin-cut fried potatoes. The fish had that fine substantial tooth, firm without being rubbery, and was not excessively salty. Somewhat of a challenge to finish, but that was a good thing. Will have to return for the grilled option. Also got to sample the house-style kabobs. As a side note, it's odd that a Portuguese restaurant would describe a signature dish as a shish-ka-bob, using a Middle Eastern language when "marinated, grilled skewered meat, Portuguese-style" would do. Checked this place out via a suggestion from my girlfriend while we vacationed in Providence. All I have to say is "Wow". Every dish we ordered was amazing, starting off with the Chorizo flame-broiled sausage, to the massive (and I mean MASSIVE) meat kebab that was served to us dangling from a skewer. Be warned that you do get a LOT of food, so choose wisely. Having said that, the leftovers taste just as good the day after ! Madeira has a 'made-to-order' policy that ensures fresh dishes. While this place was a little out of the way from downtown Providence, its nothing that a $15 cab ride won't get you to. The staff were friendly and helpful, and always attentive. Went here today to celebrate my dad's early birthday for lunch. It was pretty much dead, with us being one of maybe 6-10 total parties there - so no reason for slow service...yet here we are. Food was bland, I had the fried scrod, which was ok. Rice was horrible and potatoes had no flavor. The kicker was I found not one, but two curly hairs. It wasn't until I was halfway done with my meal that I noticed it, so was too late to do anything about it. I did mention it to the waiter in the end, but he shrugged it off and didn't even acknowledge it. Most Portuguese people will say that this place is overpriced. It is on the higher end of the spectrum. However, I haven't had a bad meal here, so I'll take it. The food is authentic and delicious. I've recently had the carne alentejana (marinated pork with potatoes and little necks), the bife cogumelos (steak with mushroom sauce), chourico a bombeiro (portuguese sausage lit with alcohol), and the canja (chicken and rice soup) -- all good. Madeira has alot of Portuguese food and a few dishes specific to Madeira (which I didn't try on my last trip about a month ago). I started off with the Shrimp Appetizer (Camarao Alinho), which was hands down the best dish I had there - perfectly done with plenty of sauce for dipping. Next up was the Chourico app (Chourico `a Bombeiro). I've had this flaming Chourico app at a few different places and none of them wowed me except this one - quality was excellent and it was cooked just right. Our main courses were a mixed bag. I have to recommend against getting the cod (bacalau) here, but the house steak was solid. It was a thicker sauce (molho) that made the potatoes and rice go down quick. Service at the bar and table was good and there was plenty of parking. Why all the negative reviews of this establishment?...I have an issue with Yelpers giving negative reviews like they're food critics for The NY Times...or because their spoon was bent! Seriously? My Family and I went here last night for my Sister's Birthday Celebration Dinner. Waiter was extremely friendly and attentive. If something wasn't right they fixed it. I had the Bitoque and it was so delicious! There was so much food that my Husband had to take the rest of his home...That never happens when we dine out! I had no room for dessert but my Sister's Rice Pudding looked really yummy! I would highly recommend this place! Hence the 5 star rating.
