Picnic table with its own grill and trash can
    Mimi J.

Madison Grove Park, located on the West side of Norris Road between Snow Rd and Calloway Ave, is one of the nicest parks I have visited in Bakersfield, and at 12 acres it is pretty good sized. There is a large grassy field on which to play sports. There is a basketball court. There was even a volleyball net strung up in the grassy area just behind the basketball court. There is a large covered area with four long picnic tables (spotlessly clean) and two large charcoal grills located convenient between the playground area and the public restrooms. You can reserve this area, which has a capacity of 80, for your group by contacting the NOR Parks & Recreation District at 392-2010 and filling out an application that you can download here http://norfun.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/FR-100-Use-of-Facility-Online-Packet.pdf There is a water feature/Spray Park which is open from 12-4 seven days a week during the summer; yes, the hours have been cut back because of the drought but this is still a place that families can come to have fun and keep cool during the hot Bakersfield summers. There are two play structures and even a rock climbing wall with swings all over a cushioning layer of bark to prevent injuries. Bark is much better than sand as neighborhood cats are less likely to confuse it with a large cat box. The public restrooms are not the traditional men's and women's; instead there are four individual bathrooms. They are very clean and well stocked with toilet paper. All in all an excellent park in a very safe neighborhood

Usually regulars will tie extra poop bags to the fence and bring bottles of water. Because this park is a sump, garbage can sometimes wind up at the bottom of the park, but it's maintained weekly and is usually pretty clean for a dog park. The one thing this place NEEDS desperately is more signage about the rules. Last Sunday, July 11, 2021 we arrived around 8am and found a group of about 20 boys and 4 coaches having football practice. Usually I wouldn't mind this type of thing and welcome the socialization for the dogs, but the kids were not properly talked to about respecting the dog park. One of the boys opened the fence gate and let both of my dogs out, who of course then bolted out into the busy street. I feel that this could have been avoided if there were proper signs about closing the fence and being mindful of the dogs. Especially because this dog park is just the small fenced in area of a larger park, I feel like they could play anywhere and dogs really just have this one spot.
