The rather sorry-looking Brunel Raj in Clifton Village is not a bad Indian restaurant, but I've…read moretried better. I've had some food here that's been very nice, such as the onion bhaji and fish tikka Starters, and other dishes that have been mediocre, such as the Achari Chicken. The staff are fairly friendly and attentive, and the portions (like in most Indians) are generous enough, but some items on the menu are quite expensive - such as the Brunel Special King Prawns, which the restaurants claims to be well-known for (and I think cost £17.50). The Brunel Raj is not the prettiest restaurant in town, and certainly not the most elegant in Clifton Village, with a fairly drab interior of green walls, historical paintings of Bristol, and a mirrored wall decorated with a transfer of Clifton Suspension Bridge. Despite this, it's often completely booked up at weekends, and busy even on weekdays, so seems to have established a loyal following - but with so many Indian restaurants out there I think I'd rather try somewhere different next time.

The Brunel Raj is awesome! The exterior and decor really don't do the place justice. The decor is…read morevery old-fashioned and leaves much to be desired. One side of the wall is taken over by a picture of the suspension bridge. However, the food really is good, and they have a takeaway service which gives the Raj an A*. The service is efficient and the staff are really accommodating - they are happy to cater for large groups.

If you're coming to Bristol from somewhere like Leeds or East London, for example, you'll notice…read morethat curries in Bristol don't quite match up (Ha, if you're coming from Leeds they're certainly not as spicy). I can't put my finger on why, maybe the portions are smaller, or the flavours aren't quite the same because the ingredients are different. Who knows? But Bombay Spice is an exception to that rule. The food here is delicious, it's not too greasy and it's full of flavour. I actually prefer to sit in this restaurant and have a meal rather than get a takeaway. It's obviously a popular choice (of the Cliftonites, that's people who live in Clifton) for good reason. It's a lovely, well decorated Indian restaurant with loads of space. Onion bhajis and Chicken Patia for me every time; the portions are a good size and if you rubbed the bhajis on some dry wall it wouldn't go see-through, which is more than I can say for some places. In fact I know what I'm having for my dinner again now.

The food here is superb, with a wide ranging menu to satisfy even the most discerning curry lover. The management are charming and friendly, and occasionally they throw in a few free beers if you get a take away. Much like the reviewer before me, i have spent a long time looking for a decent curry house in Bristol and it is safe to say i have found one.
