This is my main go to Indian grocery store. The store is big for an indian store. There were a ton of products. Plantain is something which I always get from here. They also have realicecream kulfi. I went for a kesar pista one. It was a bit expensive at about $13, but was of good quality. Marble soda was an interesting item I took to try. Marbles doesn't really seal the soda, but fell inside the bottle. It was ok. Roti and other frozen items we expect from an Indian store was present. read more

Cashier was a little slow and kept running off to help customers instead of continuing to check people out or call other people to help, but I have no idea how many people they have on staff so that may unfortunately just be the norm. You'll find most of the essential Indian groceries here--but not everything. If you're looking for variety, Apni Mandi definitely has more options. That said, Madras Groceries is clean and never too crowded, which is a big plus. The staff is helpful when asked, but they rarely smile or acknowledge you. We have been going here for 15 years so clearly we love this store and how well-stocked it is. Recently they have had a pantry moth infestation which they haven't been able to contain. This is a pretty serious issue as infested grain transfers to homes. We are no longer buying any grain/cookies/namkeens from the store. read more

One of my fav Indian grocery stores in the South Bay. Well lit aisles, good selection of brands, fresh produce, friendly staff, and plenty of parking. Very quick and efficient checkout process. If I don't think the produce on display is fresh enough, I have often been able to talk to the staff who will very willingly bring fresh produce from storage, if available. All in all, I like the overall vibe at this store compared to any other grocery stores around Bay Area (and there are quite a few). There is only one other indian grocery store that I like as much as this one at that is Trinetra in Sunnyvale . I almost never go to any other groceries store anymore except these two. read more

They are one of the best stocked Indian grocers with ample availability of South Indian food items particularly. They have expanded to 3 sections now. In addition to the main section, there is an annex with snacks and another one with Indian utensils. There is also a new food court with some South Indian stuff. I usually go there after eating at Madras cafe and I think they are owned by same team. Favorites here include - brown sugar and palm sugar - smaller packs of rice, esp. Basmati and Seeraga Samba - shallot - Nentharampazham (Kerala long banana) - Krishna sweets mysurpa - Grand sweets Thattai and Murukku - fresh grated coconut I do think their food court is on the expensive side (similar to a sit down South Indian restaurant) and their produce is not that fresh compared to some other stores. But still, j would come there when visiting Madras cafe and have a need for groceries. They accept Apple pay which is convenient for me and promotes contactless payments now. read more

In terms of inventory, this place has managed to have all the necessary groceries through the pandemic. They also offer a fairly efficient curbside pick-up through email/ phone. Everything being said, there are a few primary points to be careful about 1. Whilst they try to enforce social distancing (or wearing masks), I've definitely seen both of those aspects to be violated on my past trips (early through the pandemic). Not too sure if that's still the case. 2. I've definitely noted them to charge higher prices and observed additional entries on my bills (intentionally or unintentionally) that weren't purchased so my recommendation here would be to verify your bills as soon as you purchase items to catch any undesirable expenses 3. The South Bay really isn't short of Indian Grocery store's yet I felt that this one was a middle of the road average place. It's a decent sized place but the isles are narrow and cramped, prices are also not always listed and I didn't find Creamed Coconut here which is an essential ingredient for the Curry that I make. They do however, have a good selection of fresh Vegetables and is cleaner than most of the Indian store's I have visited. Sneaky business practices and fraudulent billing. Customers beware - cashier intentionally over bills items on unsuspecting customers. I bought 1 raw mango and the cashier billed for 4. When I asked, he quickly removed it and said each mango costs about $7. Also they intentionally don't label all expensive versions of grocery items (like the higher weight item) so customers pick the more expensive versions thinking they are the lower priced versions. If you bring your own bag, they won't bag the items for you. This happened not once, but several times! They expect you to bag all the items yourself. But, if you use their plastic bags, then they have no choice but to bag the item for you! Beware of arrogant, rude and lazy staff at the checkout counters. The management should train their staff better. If not, just open a self checkout lane - happy to avoid the lazy, rude staff. read more

Had a great experience with curbside pickup at Madras Groceries. Everything was well packed in boxes(masala powders, fresh vegetables, snacks, dairy, yogurt, etc) and delivered directly to my car's trunk. Prices are same as instore prices. It took just 5 minutes from my arrival to leaving the place. Curbside made job much easier. They had 2 parking spots reserved for curbside pickup. So, no need to park far away from door. Email them your grocery list (their website has the email address) and they call you when order is ready for pickup. Thanks to store Manager Vairavan and team. We got 95% of items in the quantities mentioned by us and I am satisfied. One small suggestion for them is to email back which items were out of stock for us to easily sort out at home or mention them in the return receipt pasted on the boxes. read more

These guys will nickel and dime you. They're still charging for grocery bags even though bringing your own bag is no longer an option due to Covid-19 restrictions. No other grocery stores in the area are charging customers for bags anymore. When I said this to the checkout clerk, she said "well this store is" and just shrugged when I said "so I can't bring my own bag, but you're charging me for using yours?" We love their dokla's! Also, there is always a nice selection of dosa and idli batters, including organic options. Not always, but often we can find the organic produce we are looking for to include: organic carrots, organic cabbage and organic cilantro. Our girls enjoy the wide selection of snacks, especially muruku's. I appreciate all the organic spices! read more

So I went to Madras Groceries today to get two things - the first item was $1.00 more than they charge at a similar market in the adjacent strip mall for the exact same thing. At that point, I was already annoyed and wasn't up for getting in my car and making a U turn on El Camino since I entered the McDonald's driveway thinking it would connect to the parking lot of this place and it didn't so I had to wait forever to back out and then into the right lot. My fault. Anyways, back to the story... So the other item was an Ayurvedic supplement that I knew they stocked because I've seen it in the past. They had 3 bottles on the shelf, and I was already sort of suspect because the tops of all three bottles were super dusty and seemed old, but decided to investigate further. I'm looking at all angles of the bottle to find an expiration date and couldn't see anything. So I examine the other two bottles and notice a faint EXP date on the bottoms that has been wiped off. WTH?! Like not the kind that naturally gets wiped off in time, but you can tell that someone took nail polish remover or alcohol and rubbed off the EXP dates of 10/2016 because the imprint was still there....today... on 3/2019. I'm sure that's sort of illegal and dishonest, and for supplements that is not healthy or efficacious. Moral of the story: I will not shop here anymore for anything, even if it's products that are on high rotation and not expired, solely because this business clearly lacks integrity and care for their customers. read more

Once upon a time my most frequent go-to store has now become the store I go to only if there is no option. The reasons for the same are: - They stack four things in a rack and label just one. Labels are often misplaced and takes twice as much time to find someone who can tell you what costs how much. - Their prices for packed snacks are always higher than Patel Brothers, paying 30 cents more on a product that costs $1.29 in Patel Brothers is not worth it!! Sometimes even ICC or India fresh has lower prices. - Their vegetable prices are more than the prices in their next door Felipe's Market, which has fresher vegetables and lower costs. Its high time they survey the competition around and buck up..Patel Brothers has just recently arrived in CA and becoming my favorite already!! read more

My go to grocery store in the south bay. Its clean, well organized and keeps a fresh stock of vegetables and other products.

This has been my go-to grocery store since 2009 and I must say I am thoroughly impressed by its growth and evolution. Before 2010, the store was much smaller in size, as the years have gone by not only has the store grown in size, but the number of available items on sale that relate to the Indian Diaspora have gradually increased and all of them consistently being of a quality that is great and in-line with nutritional trends and dietary needs. I tend to buy grains from here and I am very happy that they have a wide range of organic lentils on sale. I also like buying stuff like the bhel puri mix (indian chat items) and all kinds of spice powders including those that can be used in cooking Sri Lankan dishes and offering brands from southern states especially Kerala, they have all the popular brands MDH, Shan,Mothers, MTR etc and have a decent range of frozen options of rare vegetables and ready to eat food. They also have pooja(devotional) items and prestige cookers, tavas and other utensils.Unlike other indian groceries, I have never had complaints of any expired products being sold here. They have a smaller variety of fresh vegetables but their curry leaves and green chillies are definitely more superior to those found in other Indian groceries. Their aisles are always neatly laid out and the staff if very efficient and friendly. I also like that though it is crowded in the weekends, its not insanely crowded ever. It's right next to Madras Cafe which is another bonus to shop here! read more

Not the best experience. A disgruntled customer had a meltdown at the cash register regarding the service she received. I had a similar experience with an employee who was very terse and refused to help me. He instructed that I talk to the cashier and continued to stock the produce. It's a very small store with ZERO social distancing. Someone literally stood less than arm distance away to get something from the counter. Management should limit the number of people in the store during busy hours. SERIOUSLY IT'S THAT BAD! Also, noticed someone shopping without a mask. Recently I have been here and picked a package where price is not marked. I go to checkout and checkout lady doesn't know how much it is, she asks another person who is there, that person says it's $7.99, I mentioned the cashier I bought the same product from a grocery store in Sunnyvale for $4.99, now the cashier checks with another person and she says it's $6.99. One of the female cashier was so rude to the customers. I asked her where the match boxes were. She pointed me to a section. I searched and could not find them. I came back and asker her help to locate. She rolled her eyes and came with me. She pointed me to a corner where the inventory was way back of the shelf and said "there are so many here, u couldn't see ?". I stayed silent but she was rude to also another person in line. Same attitude. I am giving this bad rating because it ruined my experience with the store. And hopefully management can take notice of their cashiers and address it. read more

Excellent Indian Grocery store. Fresh produce and supplies in plenty. The turnover is quick and there is constant restocking. Some of the notable differences from other places are the fact that this location has three things to offer. Madras groceries with an area for a large selection of kitchenware and cookware as well as pooja items from India. We also have an adjacent food court with regular South Indian and some punjabi food dishes made fresh and onsite. And two doors away in the same mall is the famous Madras Cafe with its highly popular tiffin items like dosa, utthappa and idli. This is the cleanest Indian Grocery store I have been to. It is well lit and everything is easy to find. The only thing is that the produce section is a little small. They carry everything I look for and keep the refrigerated section well stocked and clean. The staff are polite and friendly.
