Ma'ema'e School our old stomping grounds.
    James T.

Ma'ema'e school...the school that we called our own. It was our own playground even during the summer months.. A lot of my friends and family still live in the LIliha, Nuuanu, and Alewa Heights area, so I do past the school quite a bit. And each time we drive by the school, I turn into that Dad, Uncle, or gramps that has a different story about the crazy things we did in school. I went to school when Mr. Matsunami was the principal. If you don't know then you better ask somebody LOL. Because we were so kolohe, a lot of the rules now were implemented because of us...man those were the days. We got the rulers, spankings, and pinching...we weren't beat-they just had to get our attention. All I can say is i'm glad that I got swat here and there for getting out of hand...I can truly say that it made me a little more respectful for teachers and it also made my reflexes much faster. Our school had a strong PTA and parents were always around school and that was in the late 70's to 80's. We had awesome events...Family Night was the best. Malasada's, teri beef sticks, farmers market, baked goods...I miss those times. I'm sure the parents are more involved now then ever because god forbid their kid on district exception does bad in school and jeopardize his chances of getting into Ma'ema'e again. I've heard its a tough school to get a DE into and its a public school. The best thing that ever happened to me was getting hounded by my counselor...Mr Takatsuki. I think he became principal at point. I was naughty to the point that he would talk to my Grandma everyday. Then one day he told me about detention homes and jails....that was enough for me to realize that I did not want to end up there and disappoint my Grandparents. Takatsuki made that very clear to me and I am forever thankful that he did. Some people say teachers shape the future of tomorrow...but lets not forget about the counselors who also can make a difference. Nothing but love for Ma'ema'e school and Mr. Takatsuki Shaka brah

Will family fun night be on a Friday or Sunday night this year in 2018? I'm a former alumni and want to volunteer for something this year..

She also made a Chinese kid cry which is very bad and she should just quit and retire plus nobody likes her and wants her here. She told a kid to shut your mouth several times probably over 10 times by now. Also her assignments makes no sense and she would also take the 8B social studies teacher Mr. Flatts work and assigns them to us and I don't get why she won't make her own work as she has so many time plus sometimes the class would be waiting outside her classroom and she wouldn't open the door until the bell rung and we would be technically all late or she's in the office doing her work and would be late to her class and it's really unprofessional of her and even worst is there's a bunch of reports probably over 100 reports about Ms. Gum and she isn't fired yet and some staff in the school doesn't like her. The students here are both bad and good I got sexually harassed two times by a kid and there's barely and good people because in my own experience some of my "friends" I made in this school aren't really that nice and they don't keep your secrets and once someone finds your secret or something that happened to you that would be hot topic for weeks. The school can improve by firing Ms. Gum or letting her go and hire a new teacher

Many students that lived outside of the district and had a GE were from Kāneohe, Kailua, Waimānalo to Wai'anae. There were also students who attended Iolani, Kamehameha and St. Louis, then transferred to Roosevelt. There are some staff and many students with different last names that are related to each other, have attended and still attend RHS. One day one of my grandma's cousins approached me. I later found out she was a cafeteria monitor during the day and custodian after school. Coming to think of it, I have relatives that graduated in the late 1970's till mid 2000's on my maternal side of the family. During Hawaiian studies class, a substitute teacher asked me, "Where do you live? What's your family name?" I responded. Then she said, "I graduated same year with your relative's name." I was quite surprised. There are currently many entrepreneurs, including those married to entrepreneurs so they help with other aspects of thriving businesses, alumni with successful careers in the public and private sector. Let's not forget about notable celebrities listed in Wikipedia. Hawaiian language classes offered and counted as foreign language credits toward college, along with Mandarin, Japanese, Spanish, and French. I vividly recall signing up first choice: Hawaiian, second choice: Spanish, third choice: Japanese. I remember getting my last choice while my other friends got Hawaiian and Spanish classes. My favorite instructors who definitely made an impact in my life were Mrs. Wells, English teacher who immersed us in reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and working together in class ranging from The Hobbit, Beowulf, Shakespeare, Hamlet, too many to name, and our last individual project and typed essay for the year, Les Miserables. School is known for their language arts. Fine Arts and Cooking teacher, Mrs. Fong. She was the one who encouraged me to consider applying for colleges to arts schools on the mainland. I've also enjoyed learning baked recipes. One of those recipes taught in class was how to make pumpkin pie. We had access to ovens, sinks, and clean counter tops. Fun, practical, and life learning skills. Japanese language sensei, Mrs. Fujinaka for teaching us one of the first things is, "Otearai e itte mo ii desu ka?" Translation in English, "May I please go to the restroom?" Reserved for when really got to go and having a brain fart. Hiragana, katakana, and some of the kanji ingrained in memory. Economics teacher, Mrs. Leung taught us how to write checks which I thought was cool as it applies to signing legal documents till this day. Sports was and still is an integral part of the student body. I remembered running between two to four old football field laps daily after school, where dirt would kick up and if wearing white shoes, would get dirty fast. I vividly recalled running snakes weekly on red and gold bleachers, north, south, east, and west, in no particular order. Legs would get jiggly or charley horse if out of shape. Yet, great cardio, conditioning for the body. Sports practices ended at 6 PM. Games on Saturdays either on or off campus. Loved the swimming pool especially during P.E. Earned school credits while working on a life skill. They're also known for their band. Many clubs offered on campus too. Enjoyed underground cafeteria, choice to eat indoor or outdoors. Cafeteria staff offered a choice of school lunch or chef salad. Limited parking. First come, first get in the morning at 7 AM. Some lessons I don't recall learning and wish instructors taught at that time were study skills, time management, and financial literacy. There were cliques here and there. Now, we're all grown peeps and if we run into each other in public, it's "Hey! How's it going?" followed with a hug and honi on the cheek.

It was an interesting experience, and as with all schools, had its bullies and challenges. Looking back, though, I can honestly say that I was very fortunate to go to a school with very caring teachers and a supportive family to push me through the tough times of being a teenager. I enjoyed volunteering in the library and cafeteria as well as playing on the tennis team and in the band. Singing in the choir and going on camps and trips was always a highlight. But most of all, the rigorous academic curriculum prepared me well for college courses. My then-fiance and I attended my 10 year reunion and flew in from Florida and it was nice to see some old classmates. Now that we're back in Hawaii I am volunteer- coaching the tennis team to give back to a program that I participated in for 6 years. Time sure flies!

The curriculum…read moreis not as rigorous as what we're used to in California, and the disciplinary methods are a little unconventional but every child is different and this might work for your child(ren). Student/teacher ratio is pretty low which allows more attention towards the students. They have a wonderful program which allows kids to have breakfast with their parents before classes in the morning. Breakfasts are really cheap -- your basic local breakfast stuff: eggs, bacon/spam/Portuguese sausage, rice, cereal etc -- but it allows you to spend time with your kids before you rush off to work. Some of the teachers are inexperienced as they do hire new graduates to join their staff. My only gripe with this place is that they did not challenge the kids enough. My child was there for only half a year but there wasn't much homework and the curriculum was really more towards playing than learning. After we moved back to California, my child had a hard time keeping up at the new school where the curriculum was so much more rigid and intense. Strangely, Hongwanji is a private school and my child is now attending a public school. I had expected more from a private school!

But what I learned here was social interaction, community, religion, sports, and music. Because of Hongwanji and the YBA, I was a JPO, cub scout, boy scout, basketball player, and volleyball player. I learned how to serve lunch, clean up, and be a part of a team. I learned how to swim and 'jump rope for heart.' I learned how to budget my allowance by buying either the fried noodles or the Star Wars cards. I was a part of the 40K relay team and we were awarded the youngest team. I marched in a competition. I went to Disneyland. I got in to a lot of trouble but it was the teachers who cared about everyone that kept me from being an outright delinquent. Thank you Mr. Date, Mrs. Kimura, Shannon's Mom, and Mrs. Endo. They also stimulated my love of reading. And last but not least, the Hongwanji cookbooks are my most used especially when I'm ono for some comfort food. I learned how to cook because of these Hongwanji cookbook. Back then it really was a village raising each and every child.
