Maes Artro is a heritage museum in Llanbedr, Gwynedd which focuses on the Second World War, the RAF and the home front.
Their leaflet supplies plenty of information about the attraction and why you would want to visit. The attractions advertised include a rural heritage museum, an officer's mess, RAF museum, 1940s shop fronts, a street of yesteryear, and more.
It costs £5 to get in for adults with reductions for senior citizens and children. There is a parking field, which when we arrived, mid morning in August, had two other cars. There were various staff milling around dressed in 1940 clothing, but very few people spoke to us. As 3 adults we handed over a £20 and the man at the entrance had to go and find some change.
The whole placed has an air of being run down, with one or two areas being closed for redevelopment, despite being advertised on the brochure, and it being the height of the summer season.
Within the museums themselves there are lots of interesting artefacts, but very little explanation, so it was hard to decide what anything was.
We didn't decided not to have a drink or eat in the officers mess or the other cafe on the site, having spent maybe an hour wandering around wondering what was going on. Had we visited in November we wouldn't have been surprised at the lack of people or the closures but this was August.
All in all this was a disappointing day out. read more
