A little background info first: I've been a teacher for a summer program in Oxford for nine years. We occupy two of the colleges with 500 students from all over the world, as well as have a sister program at another college (with slightly younger teens) of a about 300 students. I've been coming to the boathouse for nine summers with 25-30 of my students, just as many of my colleagues have done and continue to do with their classes. I have never had a problem with the boathouse until today, but I'm certain I won't have a problem again, as I simply won't go back and will instead go to Salter's Steamers (which is closer to Pembroke where I teach, albeit slightly more expensive that the Magdalen Boathouse).
My students had six self-hire punts today. The earliest punt took off around 10:55am, with the last leaving around 11:05am. The first three groups of students returned between 11:40-11:50am (well earlier than the 60-minute slot) with the last two punts returning at 12:03 and 12:07. I was charged an extra 11 pounds for the "late" arrivals, as I was told that all six punts were registered as having taken off at 10:55am (which is ridiculous and impossible as I was standing on the dock and I looked at my mobile phone right as the last one left so that I could make sure I was back within the hour (as I wasn't going on the water with them). At absolute worst, the one punt was back 2 minutes late (with the other being on time), but the girl working on the dock was insistent that they all left by 10:55 (again, impossible, as that was the time the first boat left and not even all the kids were in their punts by then). (Never mind that three were back early, of course.)
In the past, I've never had a problem, but to be honest, after this, I won't be back (and I'll make sure all my colleagues know). It's aggravating that after years of business, this is what it has come to (over two minutes). Of course, they're fair to charge the extra (as it says on their signs), but again, it really should have only been for one punt - not for two. Poor show, indeed. read more
