People in Hastings speak with such pride about this place. I went there after several…read morerecommendations and was really underwhelmed. It was OK, but that was about it. Just like any other chippy really...... A little like the town itself it was perhaps better a few years ago. It's doubly sad as they still fish here with a small fleet of beach launched boats. So. Where to go for the best fresh fish? Straight to the New Inn at Winchelsea. The best grilled plaice I have ever eaten. Anywhere.

When you go to the sea-side you have to have fish and chips…read more It's the rules. The Blue Dolphin has long been praised in the area for being the BEST fish and chips. Now if Hastings does one thing right, it's its Fish and Chips. As with any resort by the sea you'll have a plethora of choice along the promenade and through the Old Town. These tasty battered offerings in abundance, it's quite a thing to claim the 'BEST FISH AND CHIPS IN TOWN'. In my opinion, the Blue Dolphin has good fish and chips. Better than most places in the country, but not the BEST. Because of it's reputation, it is reliably busy all through the summer and seating is limited inside. If you don't mind waiting in the inevitable queue, sometimes stretching through the car park then you'll be greeted with a mighty fine, fluffy on the inside, crispy on the outside chip and a perfectly battered bit-o-fish. It does have a bit of a reputation for just being closed sometimes. Randomly closing here there and everywhere. But if you wander down there, find it closed... just keep walking, they'll be another.

Around St. Leonards we found a few fish and chips restaurants/Cafes/Bars and this was one of the…read moreclosest to were we were staying in St. Leonards and looked quite nice. We went in for lunch. You could say that most fish and chip places are very similar to one another, true enough, what is there to change? There's a lot of food cooked in a lot of fat! And you get the blast of hot fried food as you walk in. The décor is a white and black scheme with the odd photo or picture of a sea related subject. Tables and chairs were the cheap metal tubular frame type and good enough, although the first table we sat at was wobbly. Sounds like most of them.... The staff was polite, and we went to the seated area where we had our order taken. Surprise surprise, we both had cod, but only one small chips to go with that because Elle didn't want any. Elle is pretty picky when it comes to chips, and will only eat them if they're crispy and delicious, not if they're hard, soaking in fat or over-cooked. And she wasn't in the mood for them on that day anyway. We ordered some mushy peas and a gherkin for me. We waited about 10 to 15 minutes for our food to be cooked, which is fair enough if they're cooking the food from scratch. We got our food and were surprised, they put chips on Elle's plate! We mentioned this to the waiter and he said "we split the chips up onto both plates. That is a small chips, we though you were splitting them." There were LOADS of them! 50 or so on our plates combined! And the cod was also massive!! If we went by portions this Fish bar would get 5 out of 5 for value and amount! The pots of mushy peas came out and they were massive too! Only down side was their chips weren't very good, and the fish didn't seem too fresh. Neither of us finished all our food. We paid £19 for two very large portions of cod, about a kilo (2lbs) of chips, two very large gherkins, two cans of drink and about 200grms (1/2 can) of mushy peas!! An incredible amount of food!
