A person in my party has a gluten allergy and the staff worked very hard to make her a dish that would suit her restriction. I was really looking forward to trying Magic Kitchen, but unfortunately the service completely derailed the experience. My friend and I were seated and then ignored for about 30 minutes. When someone finally came to our table, they dropped off menus and immediately asked if we were ready to order -- we hadn't even had a chance to open them yet. We placed a drink order, and then... nothing. After waiting another 10-15 minutes with no drinks and no follow-up, we decided to leave. I understand restaurants get busy, but some basic acknowledgment or communication would've gone a long way. Plus by the time we decided to leave there was only one other table with people in it. It was clearly intentional that we were being ignored. Sadly, we never even got to try the food. read more

Another Springfield gem! Food is not pictured by me because it's devoured immediately. Spice levels are mild medium and hot. Beware mild can be HOT. Ok, this was a good place to have some Thai. We got the egg rolls with peanut sauce, very good and hit the spot, the sauce was different than I'm used to and a little runny, but the flavors were really good so no complaints. We both ordered the pad Thai , mine with no bean sprouts, it came out hot. Now I will say it was very good, but again very different from any pad Thai I have ever had. It was sweet and had onions and egg in it...again not bad, just very different. The service was friendly so 5 stars there, the restaurant itself could use a little sprucing up, the bench on my side of the booth was ripped, that type of thing. Over all good experience. read more

Ever since I discovered this restaurant I have been obsessed with it. The waitresses are quick, kind and efficient. I typically will order the chicken pad thai (medium spice) or the stir fry chili paste with beef. Both dishes are flavorful and tender. We always visit the Lewis St. location and absolutely love the food! Our order rarely changes: pad woon sen mild plus with chicken, several orders of baby egg rolls with peanut sauce and cucumber sauce. Top it off with a Thai tea with cream and sticky rice with ice cream for dessert. Food comes up super quick. Service is quick and efficient. You don't go for the ambiance or decor. read more

Those of us who live and work around Springfield and love Thai food are spoiled. The Magic Kitchen locations (Peoria Rd. And Lewis St.) bang out consistently delicious food. I travel to Chicago and other cities on biz/play and don't bother getting Thai food anywhere else. That's why I'm so confused about the last couple of dishes I've had from the Lewis St. location. Specifically, the Pad Thai at Lewis St. is different than the same dish served on Peoria Rd. If they weren't part of the same group I'd think nothing of it, but they are so I think the Pad Thai should be consistent. To be blunt, the Pad Thai at Lewis st. Just isn't very good. The noodles are different as are the flavors than the same dish served at Peoria Rd. It's fair to ask why I ordered it if I don't like the dish. The simple answer is I forgot. Are there other dishes which appear on both menus but taste fundamentally different? Lewis St. is better than 3 stars as evidence by the busy lunch crowds so I'm nitpicking here but I'd love to hear from management if they see this review . One final note: please put Phad Kee Mow on the Peoria Rd menu. Thank you read more

My granddaughter and I walked about a block to this place. We shared spring rolls minus the chicken to die for. My grand introduced me to delicious light, meatless wontons. She had the sweet and sour dinner while I had the vegetable dinner, which we both enjoyed, after sampling the fried tofu(the best I'd ever had anywhere because it was so tender) and peanut sauce. My grand also had Thai sweet coffee. She was so impressed that she promised to tell her friends about the place that was so close to where she lives; I plan to return for the spring rolls, wontons and tender fried tofu. read more

Well I just got finishing throwing up tonight's dinner..TMI, I know. My family has been coming here for YEARS, we order the same thing and this is the first time I got food poisoning. Was fine all day and after I ate my Chilli Paste dish, I felt uncomfortable. I thought I was full but as time went by, it got worse, ultimately led to chills, nausea and my head in the toilet. I visited on a recent quick trip. Nothing fancy & easy on the wallet. Service is a bit skimpy. We stood around for awhile before some told us to sit anywhere. When our waitress finally arrived we had to ask for menus. They really need a "seat yourself" sign & menus on the tables. When she finally got back with the menus... after a lengthy conversation with friends in the next booth... she was really nice. We weren't in a hurry or starving. I had the Pad Thai with chicken ($10.95) and really liked it. It was seasoned just right and was the perfect comfort food for a cold, damp evening. For the price I received enough for 2, so it definitely is a doggy bag meal unless you are just starving. I tried my companions Lemon Grass soup & while too spicy for more than a spoonful or two for me (he luvs spicy), I thought it was really tasty. Not good, not bad. If I were to pick one restaurant that I've dined at over the past few months and give it an absolutely average rating, this would be it. I was also mad that they didn't have cups of soup to go along with my meal. First Thai restaurant I've experienced like that. Ordered chicken Pad kee mao. They used ground chicken, not sliced. Not a big fan either. It was okay. I won't be going back because I hope to God I never have to stay overnight in Springfield ever again. I'm giving this place 2 stars instead of just 1 because the service was very good. The food, however, was terrible. I was in Springfield for work last week and couldn't have been more disappointed with this place. The green curry was overly salty, I couldn't eat more than 10 bites. My companion ordered the pad thai which had more onions in it than noodles. It was disgusting. I was really looking forward to having some excellent food here based on the reviews. I've been a fan of Magic Kitchen (Peoria Rd. And Lewis St.) since the 90's. Chicken pad see ew medium, bume noodle dry medium, egg rolls. That's all I ever order. Myopic? Sure, but it's consistently terrific. I moved to Florida for 5 years, and every visit back to Springfield, I would bring back $50 worth of frozen egg rolls. They are simply the best, along with the peanut sauce, of which is amazing. I have tried Thai at several locations in Florida, and it wasn't even close. Springfieldians have it made! I cant lie, I debated between 3 and 4 stars. In reality its like a 3 1/2 stars. I had heard a lot about Magic Kitchen, both from friends and online reviews. People raved and I had had quite a bit of mediocre Thai in Springfield so I was excited to try this out. We decided to go to the second location instead of the first due to proximity and not wanting to wait. Im wondering if there is a significant difference between the two? First, the staff wasnt terribly pleasant. I mean, thats fine for me as long as they arent outright rude. Im there for the food, not necessarily to be entertained, but I can see how it would be off-putting to a lot of people. Second, the glass of wine I ordered was clearly past its prime and tasted like it had been watered down. That taught me a lesson in ordering wine at a dive Thai place. Also, Ive heard people say its cheap, but the things I ordered seemed pretty standard for Thai places at $7-9 per entree. As for the food, it was just OK. Nothing blew me away. Some of it, like the Phad Kee Maow, was actually below par. The Basil dish was alright. As with a lot of 'just OK' Thai food, the level of flavor just wasnt there. I was looking for brighter flavors, more of a layered taste. Am I asking for too much? Magic Kitchen will definitely satisfy a Thai craving, but its not at the top of the game. read more

We just had the most miserable experience of our eating lives, because of a table of about 15, 50 years old women, drunk, screaming at a decibel level louder than a Metallica concert. Casual ambiance, delicious Thai food, reasonable prices, good service, beer and wine, central location - the "go to" place for any occasion. Great choice for a meal with friends after a movie or a family dinner. Maybe lower the lights a bit for a romantic vibe? Try the spring roll appetizer - fresh and light! Pad Thai is always a favorite but I would love to see it served with more fresh vegs like cilantro, scallions, bean spouts, cabbage, and chopped rather than crushed peanuts. I'll be back. It's been years since I've been to the other location, which I used to love. Either my tastes have really evolved or this place is not-so-much anymore. I think it's both. We went out of our way because I really wanted to eat here. Needless to say, my husband thought I was crazy. The Pad Thai was ugly and brown, with no color,veggies, or herbs and had salty flavor. Love this place! We cam at a recommendation from a bartender at another bar, she was right! The Bumee soup was to die for and I loved the chili paste chicken and the white pepper pork. I often have them add an order of mixed vegetables to my food because although the flavors are wonderful, it's a lot of just rice and meat dishes. The service is the only thing (and inconsistency) that is really lacking. It seems to have improved recently but there has been a couple times where it has been atrocious! I always give the benefit of the doubt and try a place more than once. One problem is the food is not consistent. One trip a female waitresses appeared annoyed to have to serve a single person, encouraged the cashier to add $2 to the ticket at the register "for the coconut milk" when he had charged me the menu price, (he refused) and then stood by the table blocking my exit (I was getting tip money in my change) until I had put a tip on the table. Another time, after my party had ordered specifically to have the rice separate from the curry sauce, we received a lot of rice with a drizzle of curry on the top only. We asked and were told smartly "That's how we make it here." $14 for white rice with a splash of sauce? We will not be back. read more
