A night in old St Charles for Legends and Lanterns - decided to try Magpie's. The outdoor eating around was very inviting and has the feel of an outdoor Paris cafe. A little chilly, but they have some long outdoor fire pits that keeps things nice and warm. Servers were very busy, but did a great job of keeping an eye on us and actually got my iced tea refilled a few times. (Big plus for me) Food. I got the half and half - got the half house beef sandwich - see pics. Meat was VERY flavorful, cheese, tomato and onion. Would have been better as a hot sandwich, but was still good as a cold sandwich. Also had the potato soup - was really good. I recommend it. Like a baked potato soup with bacon bits and cheese. Spouse had the quiche and salad - ham and smoked Gouda quiche - she said it was ok, but a little under cooked. Seasonal salad - spinach, candied pecans, mandarin oranges, feta, poppyseed dressing. Said it was good - could use a little more of the fruit and feta. If in the area and looking for a cute cafe setting I will recommend. I will back. Main Street St.Charles for the win! This patio is top notch! Over 90 degrees today but didn't feel it a bit with all the shade! The girls working the patio were friendly and hard working! I love the cute little patio they have here. They had some nice plants and fans going, so it wasn't too hot for the summer heat. For lunch, I ordered the half sandwich half salad combo with a strawberry lemonade. For the sandwich, I ordered the chicken ranch. The chicken was moist, and the bacon was cooked to perfection (super crispy without any chewy spots). The bread was soft and tasted homemade. The overall flavor of the sandwich was a bit plain, so I asked for a side of the buffalo sauce to dunk the sandwich into and then it was perfect. Next time I might ask to add lettuce, tomato, and onion as well. For the salad, I ordered the summer special mango salad with spinach, mangoes, almonds, onions, and a poppy seed dressing. Salad was fresh and really tasty, but way too much dressing. At the end, I literally had a pool of dressing left in the bowl. The strawberry lemonade here is really something to write home about. It is fresh and made with real fruit. Very tasty! We will be back. read more

1st time here and wasn't to impressed with the overall visit . The patio area isn't the largest and they try to get as many tables in as possible so it's a little crowded and somewhat loud.We waited above 10 minutes after being seated before our waitress came over for our food and drink orders. Drinks came quickly but it took 40 minutes for our salads and French dip and chicken sandwich. Spinach salad was nice and refreshing and the honey chicken sandwich was good . I wish this place the best of luck in business they just need to work on serving times because the menu items aren't to complicated. read more

We were looking for a nice patio near our parking spot so selected this quaint restaurant. Their menu is perfect for lunch. The service was friendly and even gave us some drinks that were mistakenly made which was bloody Mary's. I could tell jt was in-house made mix and very yummy. They have nice salad options and the sandwiches were plentiful. I had a French dip and would ask for cheese next time, and some condiments on top of the au jus. Three stars for food. We used to live in the St. Louis area, so we've been to Magpie's several times over the years. It's a lovely place and we enjoy sitting outside. Their patio area is beautiful. Labor day weekend we actually went a bit out of our way on trip to visit Historic Old Town St. Charles because my husband was craving the coconut cream pie from a different restaurant. Unfortunately like most businesses as of late, they are so short staffed that they have to close on Sundays. My husband was so sad. Luckily Magpies had popped up on a search I had recently done on yelp, and I knew that they too had coconut cream pie - and the day was saved! Our waitress was very friendly & efficient. We sat outside in the patio area and enjoyed to well made bloody-marys. For lunch we enjoyed two different quiche slices with two different salads. The coconut cream pie was not a disappointment. We look forward to our next visit to Historic Old Town St. Charles and Magpie's. read more

We went to lunch here on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. We got a table fairly quickly and the server was super nice and informative. My husband had the special of the day, I ordered the potato soup and BLT, and my MIL ordered the red pepper soup with a sandwich that I don't remember. (Whoops) The breeze was perfect and we had such a lovely time. The food was quite tasty. However, I heard (and read) that their potato soup was their calling card - the most popular and well-loved item on the menu, so my expectations were high. Folks, they were not quite met. It's good, sure, but I've had much better at many places. It was super thick (some sort of roux?) and my whole bowl only had like 4-5 small pieces of potato. The toppings of chives, shredded cheese, and bacon were welcome, but... why weren't they a part of the soup from the beginning? And also, why weren't the toppings optional? I'm not a huge fan of chives, so I would've preferred having the option of what to put in. But now I know. I would definitely recommend this place. We only ate here once and I feel like there is so much to offer. I'm biased of course because it's also one of MY favorite dishes to make. read more

The overall rating for this restaurant is way too low, so I just have to add another 5 star review since it had a change in ownership a while back and most of the reviews have be old. Although they still do serve the classics, including potato soup, quiche, baked brie, homemade desserts, etc, they also now have a wonderful grill menu, pastas and flatbreads at dinner time that are to die for. Everything we've tried is delicious. The salads are exceptional. The entire wait staff is fantastic, and the live music at dinner on the weekends is awesome. It's the perfect style and volume so you can have a conversation without raising your voice. I never thought I'd be a regular at any place, but I find myself constantly wanting to go back. read more

This was my first time there, my wife and her sister and their dad had all been here before. The menu is pretty big, all the food looked great! The potato soup was amazing to say the least. I didn't know we had a place that had it every day! I got the half sandwich and soup with the Good Neighbor being the sandwich. The sandwich was amazing as well. Everyone seemed to really enjoy it all! We sat outside in the patio, even though it was the hottest day of the year, it was still very nice on the patio. Pretty average. It's really cute and quaint, placed in one of the old buildings on St. Charles' Main Street. The service was excellent, our waiter was kind and friendly but didn't hover. Orders were taken quickly and food came quick (a bit too quick). We sat outside since we had the pup with us. It's winter, close to the holidays, so it's pretty cold. They have it decorated nicely and equipped with gas heaters. The heaters do a bit to keep you warm in the cold, but not quite enough. It was pretty dang chilly. Now the food, while I forget to take pictures, was nothing to brag about and definitely not made to order. You can taste it. It also came out far too quick. It's not bad, but you can definitely find better elsewhere in the area. read more

First time there it was fine. We sat outside and the service and food was great. The second time not so much. We sat inside. It was cramped. I was given a dirty glass. We could look right into the kitchen which was not the cleanest. And we could see the staff "cooking" via microwave. Kind of a letdown. Beautiful outdoor patio with large wind chimes playing over umbrella covered tables, perfect for lunch, brunch, or a summer evening. While they say they are known for their Potato Soup Recipe, I think the Triple Dip Sampler, Quiche, & Bing Cherry Cheese Crepes (blintzes) were really the star items during our visit. Service was always on top of when our drinks ran low, while still giving us the time and space to have some good conversation. Arriving just before 12pm on a Thursday afternoon meant we found nearby free street parking and didn't have any wait for a table. When we left around 1pm, several people had formed a line around the sidewalk waiting for a table. Only thing I might request as a change to improve service and experience, is that both restrooms be labeled "Toilet" or "Restroom" instead of gender segregated Men & Women restrooms. There were many more women waiting for a restroom and eventually the wait was silly when no one was in the Men's room, so we just used the Men's anyway. read more

Ambiance was great on the side of the street. Although having a pole in between two people does get tedious. I ordered nachos which were very disappointing as you can see. I'd rather go to Walmart!! Sandy and I will enjoy lunch today on the patio at the pleasantly scenic and enjoyable Magpie Cafe on touristy Main Street in St Charles, Missouri. The three quiches offered are a suberb custard and makes my taste buds stand up and dance! The summer spinach salad has lots of sliced strawberries and an awesome balsmic vinagranette. They also have a popular, signature potato soup. Musicians play on the patio Friday and Saturday evenings. Very relaxing, pleasing place to dine. We recommend it! P.S. We went back and the service and food were excellent again. The prices are quite reasonable. Only thing I would suggest is the servers should offer anyone ordering quiche a larger slice option for perhaps three dollars more to see how that goes over. Five stars all the way! read more

The ladies who served us were AWESOME. No doubt, but when we looked at the menu- their selection reminded us of Dough Depot- pick 2-there was 6 of us- we all got it but different sandwiches..... the salad was as if they poured bag lettuce in a bowl and sliced a few cucumbers- everyone asked where was the dressing? Hardly tasted any... the sandwiches for all 6 of us which were all different except one, was just " edible". We couldn't believe it- we haven't been in a while and no one walked out satisfied... plus one gal got the quiche and she said it was half the portion it use to be. Bad choice for lunch. The patio is lovely, and the baked brie is quite delicious as well. Unfortunately, Last nights dinner was a mediocre experience at best. I got the French dip and they served it with cold cheese. In what world would you not melt the cheese on a French dip? It was also served with no exaggeration, 2 tablespoons of "au jus" at best. Literally not even enough for two bites. My friend's pizza was pretty overcooked and borderline on being burnt as well. Just wasn't worth the price of admission last night. read more

We were quickly greeted by the waitress who was very friendly and helpful with food and drink selections. Bring it was Friday at around lunch time it was surprisingly empty. Food came out quickly and looked amazing. The taste was as amazing as the look. We both ended up also getting dessert which was just as amazing. Magpie's saved my life Sunday. We were in town from Chicago and I was actually headed to Braddens for lunch, but if I am being totally honest, I was here for the pie. Specifically the coconut cream pie. Much to my chagrin, Bradden was closed this Sunday due to staffing issues. I feel you Bradden, the struggle is real. Magpie's to the rescue! With a similar lovely outdoor seating area, plenty of big fans to keep everybody from dripping AND featuring coconut cream pie on the menu as well, we headed up the lunch rush because the patio started filling up quickly behind us. My wife and I both ordered quiche with salad along with a couple of dirty marys. The marys did not disappoint and neither did the quiche or salads. Our server always had a smile and was very friendly and prompt. We rounded out lunch by splitting a piece of pie and all was well in the world :) Full disclosure, I never have dessert with lunch, but when it is hot out, which often it is in old town St Charles in the summer, a slice of cold coconut cream pie is just what the doctor ordered, so this specific town, when I am in town, is my exception. That's my story and I'm sticking to it ;) One interesting thing to note, the outdoor diners pay at the side window upon exiting the patio area. The salad had fresh strawberries and mango along with almonds and red onion with poppyseed dressing. Very tasty! The chicken salad was on a crescent with a generous amount of chicken. If you go on Tuesday's they offer 1/2 price desserts, so of course had to try their banana bread. One of the best patios on the St. Charles Riverfront. Good food, good cocktails, and sometimes good live music. Their menu has just enough sophistication to make you want to eat out, but is "homey" enough to make it friendly. I have to look for the specials since their dinner menu is all pasta, and I don't eat pasta, but they usually feature some good dinner specials or I can opt for one of their tasty salads. Plenty of sandwiches and pizza/flatbreads and a well-stocked bar. Perfect compliment to any nice patio. read more
