I'm a big fan of Vietnamese food. Ever since phở and bánh mì became a fairly regular part of my life, I've been hooked. I certainly have my favourite spots for these delicious foods... But I was not prepared for Mãi Mãi. From the moment that I pulled up to their Terwillegar Towne location and set foot in the door I could tell that this Vietnamese restaurant was very different - and it was my kind of place. Named Favourite Drinks on the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2024 list, I was excited for something tasty to sip on and so much more. Opening in February of 2023, Mãi Mãi is bringing a fresh perspective to everything that you thought you knew about Vietnamese food and you can feel it right away. The outside has colourful lanterns hanging above the entrance and once you are inside you realize that they were only a prelude. A shower of lanterns hang from the ceiling and edgy bright murals cover the walls. A multitude of framed art hung in gallery style completes the striking visuals in the room. The space feels new and exciting. Taking my seat, I loved the vibe of the menu itself, a collage of patterns and imagery. The icing on the cake was when I noticed a picture of Anthony Bourdain on the menu along with his quote; "Vietnam. It grabs you and doesn't let you go. Once you love it, you love it forever." He was such a champion of South East Asia. The people running this restaurant are clearly my people. With eight Signature Cocktails on the menu, each one more interesting than the last, it might be tricky to choose one. From the Saigon Negroni to the Pho Old Fashioned, I had to select the Enter the Dragon (Dragon fruit syrup, lemon juice, premium tonic water & Empress gin - $14.00) just because of how beautiful it looked. I can't deny that this was one of the most beautiful beverages that I've ever seen. The pink and purple hued liquid with a huge slab of fresh dragon fruit for garnish was certainly eye-catching. Tart and sweet, it tasted more adult than looks would imply. If you want something refreshing and beautiful, this is the cocktail for you. Một-Hai-Ba-Zô!! Mãi Mãi gives you many adventures to choose from and various types of ways to enjoy your visit. I had no idea that they have an entire cafe-style menu filled with beautiful coffees and pastries to enjoy. Opening at 11am each day, I can easily picture myself stopping by early in the day for a cozy cafe experience. There are also bánh mì on offer - lots of them! With eleven to choose from and bread baked fresh on-site, I'm sure that these would make for an exceptional lunch. I will be back to try them! However, on this Saturday dinnertime visit, I really wanted to dig into the menu and try as many different items as possible. They've got an entire Snacks section that includes Edmonton's ubiquitous Green Onion Cake and Phries that taste like phở. It was the Fried Rice Cakes with Egg otherwise known as Bột Chiên Trứng (Fried rice cakes with egg, papaya slaw & pickled carrots drizzled with a sweet tangy soy sauce dressing - $16.00) that caught my eye and sounded very unique. This dish reminded me of what would happen if Korean tteokbokki and Japanese okonomiyaki had a baby. Grabbing off chunks of the pancake-like mass, I was blown away by the texture and flavour. The rice cake was toothsome and had a bit of a crispy bite to it but the inside was luscious and creamy. The egg on top was sweet and custard-like. The slaw on the side was the perfect acidic addition to cut through the richness. This was one of my favourite dishes of the evening and it was only from the "snacks" part of the menu - things could only get better! Salad rolls are a big deal at Mãi Mãi. I'm sure that most people have tried one at some point but have you ever had a selection of eight different types to choose from? I don't think I have! Fresh, made to order and served with hoisin dipping sauce topped with crushed roasted peanuts, any salad roll at Mãi Mãi is bound to be good. I went with the Saigon Rolls (A spring roll wrapped inside a salad roll - $12.00) which sounded fun. Yes, an inception of rolls. We were able to specify if we wanted pork & shrimp spring rolls or vegetarian and we chose the latter. Every dish is plated so beautifully and with care at Mãi Mãi, each one boasting a rainbow of colours. Biting into my salad roll really did capture all of the freshness of eating a salad - except in a very different handheld way. I almost forgot that there was an entire spring roll on the inside because there was so much else going on. Dunking into the hoisin created a savoury and enjoyable experience. For me, bún (or vermicelli) is a quintessential Vietnamese dish. Without a doubt, this was my first taste of Vietnamese food and opened the door to so much more. The vermicelli at Mãi Mãi comes with a fresh herb mix, pickled carrots & daikon, scallion oil, crushed roasted peanuts, and a housemade spring roll. And enter the nước chấm at long last, a zesty dipping sauce that I love! I

Grilled Lemongrass Chicken $18.00 in 2024.

This was our first visit to this restaurant in the Magrath / Terwillegar area. Inside it's not very large but there are at least six or seven tables. Only one other table was in use at noon on Wednesday so perhaps their main business is take-out or in the evenings. I ordered the Grilled Lemongrass Chicken and my partner order the same dish with beef. There's a choice of rice or vermicelli noodles so we both went for the noodles. My chicken was delicious. It was very tender as well. My partner really enjoyed her beef dish. Both dishes were $18.00 each and very satisfying. The meal and the cafe both exude a clean vibe, if that makes any sense. Service was at our table and very friendly in a way that only an owner can do. She made us feel like she really wanted us to be there, and that makes a difference. If you are looking for Mai Mai VSK and driving west on 23rd Ave, turn left (south) on Rabbit Hill Rd and then immediately right into the strip mall. After that it's easy to find with a large bright sign. I'm sure we'll return and I can definitely recommend Mai Mai VSK to anyone looking for a delicious meal.

    Deep fried ice cream

Tried Mai Mai about 6 months ago and forgot to review - oops! I'm pretty sure we popped in to give them a try in between hockey games. I recall the shrimp crepes being a standout as well as the unusual salad rolls with a spring roll inside! Kiddo loved the fried ice cream. Green onion cake was a hit as always. I wasn't impressed by the Vietnamese Iced Coffee but maybe ice just been spoiled by Golden Bird in Chinatown. We had to try the Pho fries and the beef vermicelli is my kiddo's standard. Unfortunately neither of these wowed us but you can't win them all. Hubs had the pho brisket hollowed sandwich (think Vietnamese sloppy Joe). We all found it too messy and wet to really enjoy. The decor and vibe was spot on. The staff super friendly and attentive. Prices are a $2-3 higher here than your typical Vietnamese restaurant. I definitely want to come back here again but I'm thinking minus the kiddo and more of a date night where we can order more unusual items to share.

I placed a takeout order for lunch. I was greeted by a warm and friendly employee who offered me water as I waited for my order. The restaurant is cozy and beautifully decorated with lanterns. I ordered the mini crepes and Saigon rolls. Both were very flavourful and made with quality ingredients. I'm happy to have such a delicious restaurant close to my workplace!

I really appreciate the influx of Vietnamese restaurants that are serving items that go beyond the few staples you normally see. Vietnamese food has so much more to offer and I love to see my culture's food being showcased! We visited Mai Mai and tried their version of my favourite noodle soup, Bún Riêu ($19). A crab & tomato soup with pork and vermicelli noodles, it's not offered at many places in Edmonton. *Pro tip: to really get the authentic umami experience, ask for mam ruoc, a fermented shrimp paste that's super salty and funky but adds such an amazing depth to the flavour. And don't forget to ask for a wedge of lime! We also tried: Bún Bò Lá Lốt Tôm Nướng - vermicelli with grilled beef la lot, grilled prawns & a spring roll ($21), Bánh Khọt - mini savoury crepes with shrimp ($16 for 7) & Bò Tái Chanh - lime beef salad ($21). To drink, an iced coffee ($6.50) and egg coffee ($8) - both drinks delightful & strong. All this was a little over $90 before tax & tip. Overall, I thought it was pretty good though I did find myself wishing the flavours packed more punch and either the portion sizes bigger or the prices lower. I also wished my soup came with a side of fresh vegetables. I love the variety on the menu & the space is cute and bright. We managed to get the last open table when we arrived, but it was definitely busier when we left, so you may need to wait to be seated (not sure if they take reservations).

    Lillian T.

They specialize in Vietnamese street food. I did take out but it was fairly busy when I arrived. I did noticed most people who wanted to sit just ordered and then hoped to get a seat in the restaurant. We did take out: Bánh kot (little crepes with shrimp), bánh bột chiên (fried rice cakes with egg) and lastly the Bò Tái Chanh (rare beef salad) served with shrimp chips. Will have to go back for a sit down meal!

    Green papaya salad

Everything is prepared fresh, and the flavours pop! Have been there three times so far, and enjoyed their Viet sub, pork vermicelli bowl, and papaya salad with beef. Their viet subs are prepared fresh daily, and make for lovely sandwiches. The tasty pork for the vermicelli was skewered for crispness. The spring roll was excellent, and accompanied by SO many fresh, crisp vegetables. The papaya salad (pictured) with beef was bursting with flavour. I'll have to ask for 1/3rd of the red hot peppers. Service is always great. Very friendly and genuine. Dining area and restrooms clean.

This is one of my favourite vietnamese places for soup and appetizers. The rice and vermicelli dishes are mediocre in comparison so make sure to order what they specialize in. If I come with a big group I like to order as many appetizers as possible as it's similar to vietnamese street foods like crepes, tapioca dumplings and deep fried goodies. All of it is authentic and delicious. My must orders here are the duck salad and soup combo. It's what I come here for as no other place in edmonton has it on the menu that I know of. And it's pretty darn delicious. If I don't get that. The bun bo hue is loaded with so many meats that I never can finish it! I can't wait to go back to this locally owned business run by a family. Although service is not the greatest. They do provide whatever you need if you ask for it. They definitely won't bother you when you visit here. As most people just eat quick and leave. It's not one of those places you sit and chat and have drinks at. But for what they offer. It's affordable fast convenient and authentic. One of the best in edmonton!

Little has changed on the interior, except for the addition of a large fish tank. The menu is very typical of Vietnamese noodle houses, featuring a good selection of pho noodle soup, vermicelli noodle bowls, and rice dishes. I opted for a bowl of pho with medium sliced beef and brisket. My soup was full of meat which was reasonably tender and lean, and came in a broth that was well-seasoned. Colleen, my co-Volunteer Coordinator, ordered a bowl of Thai spicy pho, and she ordered it without any meat. She was happy with the flavour of her soup and its abundance of noodles. I started with a green onion cake, finding the two large rings of fried dough and green onions to be large and not too greasy, as well as a bit cheaper than I've had elsewhere. I also decided to do something I rarely do when I order pho - even though I find the complimentary green tea and broth from the soup to be more than enough liquid intake for one meal, I decided to try one of the iced drinks. Being a dreary winter day I felt some extra vitamin C was in order, and opted for a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice. It was incredibly fresh and full of pulp - I literally felt like I was drinking an orange in liquid form. Prices are in line, if not lower, than other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. Our entire meal, which also included a can of pop for Colleen, cost less than $25 before the tip. Service was fast and friendly and neither of us had any complaints about the food. Winter is the perfect time for a steaming bowl of pho, so consider heading to Viet Huong.

We are incredibly spoiled by the amount of amazing Vietnamese food that we have here in Edmonton. I…read moredoubt that the Vietnamese population is greater here compared to in other cities but the culinary deliciousness and pure celebration of the cuisine that comes out of this community is second to none. Certainly a point of pride in our city! From the best phở in the country (King Noodle), near-perfect bánh mì (Van Loc), delicious plant-based fare (An Chay), to innovative street food expressions that you've never tasted before (Mãi Mãi)... We've got it all. And it's the best of the best. XO Bistro + Bar throws their name into the ring with a more elevated and modern Vietnamese dining experience, demonstrating that there's a sophisticated side to Viet food that demands representation as well. VUE Weekly loved this restaurant and named them #1 Best Vietnamese, #1 Best Late Night/All Night, and #1 Best Happy Hour in 2018. First opened in 2017 and now with two locations, I visited the original Downtown spot on a Saturday evening, anxiously anticipating the symphony of flavours ahead. XO Bistro is in good company on Edmonton's famous boardwalk street which is lined with a collection of many popular restaurants. The parking is a nightmare and the small handful of street parking spots always seem to be taken. But you'll figure it out. With its proximity to the ICE District you can easily imagine that this restaurant has been able to take advantage of the pre-game dinner crowd and post-game spillover from the Moss Pit. The restaurant is larger than you might imagine, with its soaring second-storey ceiling and filled with dark moody finishes and an impressive bar completing the lounge vibe. However, the real show-stopper is the life-sized cherry blossom tree right in the entranceway, covered in pink blossoms. This tree serves as a major focal point and it's difficult to take your eyes off of it! The servers are cheerful and friendly, and although there were no window tables available we were seated comfortably. Priding themselves on their cocktail program, I knew that an XO Original was a must and soon I found the Good Morning Vietnam (Gin, Soho, hibiscus, lime juice, lychee puree - $15.00) in my hand. A cocktail to match the restaurant perfectly! I loved that this beverage was fresh and fruity and wasn't too strong. Pretty and drinkable, the sweet flavour of lychee took the lead while tart notes from the lime and hibiscus leveled the beverage out. Without a doubt, the correct drink to sip on under the blush-hued blooms! XO Bistro's goal is to serve food that isn't always traditional but is always authentic. Bold, balanced flavours inspired by the everyday energy of Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi, and Da Nang. The liveliness and fresh takes are apparent on the menu right away and I was excited to order some dishes that felt new. Starting with appetizers, the Double Trouble (Rice paper, shrimp, lettuce, vermicelli, tangy fish sauce. Choice of pork or veggie spring roll - $11.25) stood out as something fun to try. Can't choose between a spring roll or a fresh roll? Get both! I loved this playful version and especially enjoyed getting to eat two types of rolls instead of just one! We chose the pork spring roll for the inside and I loved the textural crunch and juicy pork that it provided. Meanwhile, the outside was wrapped in rice paper, acting as a window to the shrimp enveloped within. Dunking each bite into the zippy fish sauce added just the right acidity. Wonderfully tasty, so much fun to eat, and striking presentation to boot! Another item that really caught my eye was the Bone Marrow (Roasted bone marrow, panko crust, toasted baguette, pâté - $19.00). A dish that I love but only come across seldomly. Now this was a dish that I certainly did not expect. But boy did I love it! Roasting the marrow topped with a crust of seasoned panko was inspired - a genius way to add texture (and more flavour) to an otherwise fairly gelatinous ingredient. Bread is such a huge component to Vietnamese cuisine (think bánh mì) because of the French colonization in the 1800s. The Viet people then proceeded to transform this bread into a completely new, localized culinary staple. The baguette at XO Bistro was absolute fresh, housemade(?) perfection. Crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside. I loved slathering the bread with ample amounts of delicious pâté (another "gift" from the French) and then topping it all off with spoonfuls of rich bone marrow. Each bite exemplified decadence and I reveled in it. This might very well have been the best bone marrow preparation that I've ever had. Vietnamese food might be one of the earlier examples of fusion cuisine, and while colonization sucks the food admittedly does not. XO Bistro provides everything that you know and love in terms of main dishes; from bánh mì to phở (there's even a "phở challenge" where if you eat an obscenely-sized bowl in 45 minutes you get a prize) to bún. Staff won't allow happy hour specials at discounted price despite being in happy hour time frame. Hoang long is a modern clean space with bamboo accents and a newly renovated area. There is a large patio out front for summer. But it being closed off made the entrance kinda blending in. I was looking for the entrance and walked right by it. Trying to figure out how you get in is a slight challenge. As the door blends in so well and it appears it's just the patio. But that's the entrance. I visited quite early during happy hour at around 6pm. The place was entirely empty except for staff which was slightly disheartening. But I'm sure this place is bustling during the lunch hours. Wait staff were slow to greet me so I sat myself and grabbed my own menus. The menu Is vast. A huge range of thai and vietnamese foods. From soups, sandwiches, grilled meats and stews. Looking through the menu was overwhelming but at least there is something for everyone. We decided on trying the chicken satays with peanut sauce. These were a famous item popular during the taste of edmonton. They did not disappoint. They charred them so nicely I could hear the fire crackling in the dead of winter. But the best part was the peanut sauce. They don't provide this during the taste of edmonton. But it brings the dish to new heights. I would say...stick to the grilled meats here. They don't disappoint. I throughly enjoyed my bun bo hue. It was authentic and tasty. It made my list for top 5 in edmonton for sure. Portion was perfect and the ratio of meats and noodles were just right. Another great dish. My only vice was that it was happy hour...advertised from 3-7pm. But the staff would not allow discounted prices despite it only being 6pm. They had decent options like wine, beer or a customized cocktail for $4. The server states happy hour is over despite it clearly stating it is until 7pm on the menu. I point to the board and he says it's full price. Whatever. I don't like misrepresentation on menus. And discrepancys are misleading. For this I minused a star. Service was haphazard. I seated myself. Got my own condiments and even got my own drinks. I had to go to the counter to order my food and pay at the register. All the server did was put the food on my table and clean it up afterwards. The whole process downgraded the whole modern vibe to more of a cafeteria style establishment. I felt jipped tipping bc i basically served myself. So minus another star. Overall. The food was great. Slightly overpriced. But the atmosphere reflects the price in the heart of downtown. Service was okay but the whole happy hour misrepresentation was a huge turnoff. I won't ever be buying drinks here in the future. Bc hey...they don't follow the advertised prices on the menu. It's decent. I would revisit if I am in the area. Inside there was just one table occupied but there is a decent amount of seating for the lunch time crowd. It seemed cleaned. The combos they offer are a rice or noodle (pad thai that didn't look very appetizing) and then up to 3 or 4 items. The food was under heat lamps so I could see what the options were. I decided to get the fried rice and a few items. I choose a chicken first and looked at the other items before deciding on the vegetables with cashews. The woman serving me had the rectangle take out container about 2/3 full and she kept suggesting food such as the green beans and then the sweet and sour pork. Both didn't look very appetizing. I think she was hoping I would pay for as much food to get rid of since the lunch time crowd had passed but she wasn't generous with the quantity. I decided on the beef skewer and then was done. At half price I paid $7.35. I brought the food home and heated it up. I liked the beef skewer but the rest of the food wasn't very good. The food tasted greasy and I had to use my fingers to eat the chicken was it had lots of bones. I'm not sure if it's from this food, but I didn't feel well after. Definitely would not pay $14 for the food I had as lots of other great restaurants around. It would probably be better to go during the lunch hour when the food is hot and fresh but I'll pass next time I'm in the area.
