Listen I love this restaurant and have been a regular customer since the first week they opened in Ajax. The food is consistently good and delicious, however their online ordering system is the absolute worst. This is the fourth time where my I have placed my order for pickup, I arrive at the scheduled time and the counter staff are perplexed and unaware of my order has been placed and accepted ( with both app and text confirmations). I have heard from the staff on each occasion is that it has something to do with the broken but quasi-functioning tablet. For my sake and on behalf of others, I will gladly purchase a replacement device so this issue is resolved once and for all. read more

Stopped in after checking reviews and was very pleased overall. Four of us had a variety of dishes and all were very good. I had the mixed grill and it was excellent. Clean and bright, with ample seating. Conveniently located, it makes for a quick and tasty getaway from shopping or running errands. I am no expert on Afghan cuisine, having had it only a few times. However, I must say that we found the food to be SO very tasty, including the left-overs we enjoyed later on. For lunch we ordered the stuffed bread (which was okay but I don't really like fried things...extra calories), the steamed dumplings (so delicious, w a lovely sauce and lentils on top), a side dish of eggplant (the BEST eggplant I've ever tasted!), naan (different from Indian but tasty; we had some leftover that evening w our dinner, and it's great w a sausage lol), a mixed grill (the chicken skewer was the most popular among the 3 of us), and a sirloin beef dinner (my husband is fussy w his beef because we eat a lot of tenderloin...he said it was so-so but I think we are spoiled); I also upgraded to the special rice and it was super tasty, including as a leftover two days later. In addition, I ordered a chicken barley soup, which my sister in law enjoyed later that day, said it was scrumptious. The staff were so friendly. We came here about 5 years ago and wanted to return. The restaurant is medium in size, with one wall being made of gray brick and the booths being made of polished light brown wood. The restaurant is divided by a wooden handrail, which has a large potted plant and two tables on one side. Framed pictures hang from the leftmost wall and in front of said wall sits a self-serve tea station. The station itself has a goblet-like tea maker that's filled with hot water. Kabab Meal #9, which is Mixed grill. It is a combination of tikka, chicken and shish kabab skewers. Hubs was surprised the skewers were flavorful and juicy. Vegetarian Meal #1, which Eggplant meal. It is baked eggplant seasoned with fresh tomatoes, red peppers, onions and garlic served with yogurt mint sauce. The eggplant dish was the favorite. Both orders came along with rice, salad and fresh naan. We also ordered a side Spicy fries and that had a little bit of a kick. It was pretty quick. Restaurant was nice, clean and warm. Honestly one of the most delicious all around menus I have come across. I am Persian and attest that the flavors are perfect. Every meal I have tried was spectacular. It's been a few years since I wrote my review on Maimana so I figured it's time for an update... especially considering how many times I've eaten here! Over the years they've added various new items to their menu. Just when I think this place can't get any better, they add items such as Bolani, Quabili Rice and Dolma (just to name a few). It's getting harder and harder to settle on just one item for lunch or dinner. I want them all! The service is fabulous, the food is fabulous... clean, lean and healthy eating. You can't go wrong. My family was craving for some Afghani food in our area so after looking into a few reviews we decided to give this place a try. The place is not too bad in size, has enough seating for about 20 ppl or so where you order at the counter with a friendly person whom I presume may be the owner. Here was what we ordered: CHAPLI KABAB, C$15.95- 2 Minced Beef Patties served with Naan Salad & chutney. - This was pretty good with some spice kick as well. I'd say this was one of the more flavourful chapli we've tried. SULTANI, C$18.50- Combination of tikka and shish kabab skewers. Include rice, salad and fresh naan. - The meat was decently tender. I was informed it was a mix of top sirloin and something else I may have forget. LAMB SHANK, C$20.95-​Braised shank seasoned & simmered with onion, garlic & herbs. Include rice, salad and fresh naan​. - This was recommended by the front staff. The shank was nice and tender. We wish it was a bigger piece for our greed. lol EGGPLANT BORANI MEAL, C$14.95- Baked eggplant mixed with fresh tomatoes, red peppers, onion and garlic served with yogurt-mint sauce. - This is a decent option for vegetarians. Overall I'd say my favourite to least fav not saying that it wasn't good but just comparing to the ones ordered...1) Lamb Shank; 2) Chapli; 3) Sultani; 4) Eggplant. In my continuing quest to explore new (to me) restaurants, I ventured out to Ajax, with no particular destination in mind. I'll just know when I get there. That brought me to Maimana, an Afghan/Middle Eastern restaurant. It's a small place, with seating for around 30ppl, and no table service. Orders are placed and picked up at the counter. Trays and plates are also returned there. I am no expert on this cuisine but I like most of what I've had so far from other restaurants. It took me a few minutes to decide what to order but I chose the Waziri Tandoori Kabab, which included a skewer each of tandoori chicken and beef shish kabab with rice, salad, and naan for $13.95. What I got was a plate of very tender and juicy tandoori chicken, moist ground beef kabab, fluffy basmati rice, a simple salad with a delicious house-made dressing, and a freshly made naan. This food was good! It was cooked perfectly and full of flavour! I'll be back to try more of their menu. Highly recommended! read more

I stumbled across this little place and almost passed it by. It doesn't seem like much of a place, kind of a fast food set-up but being Afghan cuisine I'm always up for something new. Upon entering I found that this is a proper restaurant with a nice variety of dishes. I would suggest the Mantoo (dumplings) as an appetizer. Of all the selections I tried the Sultnai kabob which was very tasty & distinctly unique flavour. I will definitely try the mixed grill next time. Only caution is the the House Doogh soft drink is made of yogurt & mint which is an acquired taste so just order a glass instead of a whole pitcher. You can tell how good a restaurant is by the amount of orders and while eating here I counted at least 10 (maybe more) people walking in for take out orders. read more

I had a very good experience here. The decor is very simple, and there are no waiters or table side service, but the food is very good. We ordered 3 different kebab meals, and the eggplant meal. This was my parents first experience with Afghan food, and they plan on coming back. I had the mixed grill kebab which came 3 kinds of meat, all we very moist and flavorful. I have eaten here about 2 times in the last few years. Each time I ordered the chicken tandoori wrap. It is filled with tandoori chicken, lettuce, tomato, and onion all of which is folded into a flour tortilla. The flavor is good on the chicken however it was not grilled which throws it off a little... Not a big deal... My biggest issue is value... The wrap alone is $7.40 with tax and the combo will cost you just under $11 give or take... The other issue is that they advertise lower pricing on their website at the time of this review... I am not saying the food is bad...The food is GOOD, just thought for the price I should have gotten a little more chicken in the wrap and the chicken should have been grilled... Found that any additions to a meal are instantly up charged at nearly the full price of the meal, I.E. you want an extra skewer of protein on your salad, $12...on a $16 salad. I'm sorry but what you get in return it isn't a $28 meal. So while it's tasty I don't think the value is there. Will I go again, sure, but not as much as I otherwise would if pricing was more reasonable. read more

Finally had the chance to try it after avoiding it since it opened due to them not serving the famous afghan Qabuli rice (I just feel always ended up going somewhere where the rice is served instead) The place looks great, and the food looks nice too but I found it fell short on flavour and comparing it to other Afghan places it did not meet the same standard. I think they're trying too hard to appeal to western people. Also they use black sesame seeds on the bread instead of the traditional nigella seeds which I find rather sad. Pretty good quality halal afghani food with kababs, wraps, masala burgers, vegetarian options like eggplant borani. I usually have a wrap and fries combo which is about $9 and tasty. Portions are not gigantic which is ok given that the quality is better. This is not a place like your common shwarma huts where you have the option of adding 10 different items to your platter so the fixings are somewhat limited for the wrap. What a welcome addition Maimana is to Ajax, once the land of too many gourmet burger joints! Hubby found great Yelp reviews on this place and while in the area for a shopping trip last weekend, we decided to drop in for lunch. If you're here for a quick lunch, think again. Our lunch order of mixed grills and a tandoori chicken wrap took just as long as it would have taken (15 - 20 min to get the food) had we gone to a regular sit down restaurant. But I understand that it can take some time to cook up kabobs and that wonderful (not indian) naan bread. Waiss, the owner, was very friendly and chatted with hubby while our babe and I checked the place out for a high chair and a change table. It's funny how after becoming parents, our decision on where to dine are made largely based on two things: Do they have high chairs? And do they have a change table? This may not be important for everyone but for parents with little ones still in diapers, it can be a matter of having a relaxing lunch vs shovel it in as quick as possible lunch. And unfortunately, most fast food joint do not have change tables in their usually large washrooms. Maimana was no exception and this made the lunch feel more rushed as we knew we would have to stop in at another place just to change her diaper. Now on to the food. As the previous reviews mentioned, the kabobs in the mix grill were well seasoned (to the typical Afghan style) and served in juicy yumminess...at least the chicken and the ground beef ones were. The sirloin, in my humble opinion, could have been marinaded a little longer for tenderness as it was quite toothsome. The condiments served with the meal were nice compliments to the grilled meat with my preference leaning to the smokier red sauce. The tandoori chicken wrap was also tasty if not a little too salty for my taste buds. And I don't know why it happens so often to me but it happened again here....yes. I didn't get my doogh and I didn't realize it until we left. I will blame the missing drink on my mommy brain which was trying to have a fast-ish lunch while worrying about where to change a diaper. But our friendly owner also forgot about it and seeing as we were the only patrons in the place, I guess we were all too preoccupied with something else that day. I will be back to try out the rest of their menu when I'm in the area and hopefully get my doogh next time. read more

Unfortunately. Chicken Tandoori was nice and spicy, flavorful and juicy. Salad was lightly dressed and a nice addition. Naan bread is thicker than Indian naan, but hot and delicious. Also tried the Sambosas which had a meaty filling and well seasoned. The owner came over to our table and introduced himself and inquired how we liked our meal. Here is my review: Freshness/quality: 5 stars. The salad was nice and crisp. Meat and rice were also quality. Naan bread was hot and fresh. Nothing stale. Food/flavor: Chicken tandoori: 5 stars. Incredibly moist and flavorful. My God. Probably the best I've had. And I'm Arabic. Rice: 1 star. Had zero flavor. I really struggled eating it. I poured white and red sauce on top and still struggled to pull any flavor out of it. Sauces: White sauce. 2 stars. Flavor was good but it was very thin and soupy and broke and curdled on top of my rice. Red sauce. 5 stars. It was flavorful and just delicious. I was too full so I took the bread home. This place gets 3 stars because the customer service was good and the chicken was amazing. But the rice was too much to overlook as it took up 3/4 of the plate and rice is a pretty big deal to me. This has to be my new fave kabob spot in town! I used to think only the best kabob spots were in markham but this one takes the cake! Food was very tasty, well proportioned and super fresh!!! We ordered the tandoori chicken, grilled chicken and beef kabobs to-go. I would have given this a 5 but they messed up my order and gave me something else insteadnof my beed kabob... which was dissapointing considering it wasn't a very busy hour. I would definitely come back nonetheless... but maybe preorder (bec it takes about 10mins to cook) and double check my order next time... but certainly a great spot in Ajax!!! read more
