Had a delicious breakfast - 3 eggs omelette with house made baked beans and halloumi. Coffee was awesome. Only 2 nits to pick - the beans weren't quite cooked enough so I didn't finish them, even though they were tasty. Undercooked beans = sore, gassy guts. And secondly, the wait person put my cutlery on my plate in such a way that it ended up getting bean sauce on my serviette. Minor details, however they can be the difference between 4 or 5 Nonetheless, this would not stop me from returning. read more

The Manager nor a cashier staff, Hailey was not friendly with me at all. They put their business first and the customer, as second important as from my experience today. They played the Christmas music so loud, I could not hear nor talk to anyone at my table who sat with me. My Mother was not impressed by her fish dish nor was I happy about my salad (plus the coleslaw with no dressing that they gave me). I also found out when I arrived that their menu that they have on their website is not the present menu that they serve as real food. I was looking forward to having lamb which was on their website's menu but they did not have it on their menu that is being cooked and served in their place. I am from America. I would not recommend this place to any Americans when I get back home. To be honest, I would instead recommend the Irish Pub (down the street), than I would recommend this place. I've never been to New Zealand before, but if there was a restaurant I could take back to the states with me, it would be Maina! I enjoyed their pastry and breakfast choices for 3 straight days during our stay. The Eggs Benedict was exceptional! Great service with a beautiful menu! I ate here multiple times with a large group and they accommodated us with ease - we ordered the red curry chicken & the bacon and tomato linguine! Both were delicious, but I am partial to the curry. The linguine had an rich but slightly overwhelming bacon taste. The second night we asked that they prepared something a bit cleaner (we're an athletic team traveling for competition) and they prepared chicken over roasted vegetables. It was incredibly satisfying. I definitely recommend this restaurant for locals and tourists alike! read more

We were grateful that every other spot we visited looking for lunch after 2pm had closed their kitchen because it brought us here. We were greeted with a warm welcome - such a delightful space, well presented, clean and attractive with super helpful staff. The menu is interesting, the food was tended with care and thought. We enjoyed the pork belly with slaw, apple sauce and bread as well as the fragrant samosa with salad. A creamy hot chocolate and well made coffee were the icing on the cake. Highly recommend Maina if you are visiting the Hawkes Bay region. read more

Have visited this restaurant on the last two visits to the Hawkes Bay, extremely friendly staff, good coffee and a well done menu. Food obviously done by a Professional because every thing i had was spot on. We lucked out finding this place with no reservation, as we were passing by and the menu looked good. The service was prompt even during the dinner rush, and the salads and pizzas were excellent. I'd probably recommend this spot to others, although there's so many choices in the village that I wouldn't automatically head back here on the next trip. read more

Came here for dinner. Warmly welcomed on arrival and the wait staff were very friendly. Food was amazing! Pizza with bacon and BBQ sauce was hands down the best pizza I have ever tasted - including in LA, Chicago, New York and Rome. Perfect crust, not too thick - and just the right combination of cheese and other toppings. Mint pea fritters with feta cheese fondu were a tasty start to our dinner. One of our party had the beef ribs which were so tender. Wine list is great - the rose was excellent as was the Pinot noir. We didn't have room for dessert but will try to sample desserts next time. Every dish that came out of the kitchen was beautifully presented and with such a friendly staff I feel this place will become more and more popular. Visited Maina four times for lunch now. I find the place hard to fault. Most recent orders include a chicken burrito (excellent) and my companions ordered fish and chips. Huge portions for lunch - which might not appeal to everyone. I feel the chef there attends to presentation and taste very carefully because the food is delicious and attractive to look at. I happened to meet the family that own this restaurant and learned about the history of it which made it so much lovely of a place. The food and atmosphere are divine. I came to enjoy a coffee and work on a blog and ended up staying all afternoon. I didn't feel like I was imposing at all. The food is lovely as well! Great place, great story, great people!
