The building itself is superb, housed in an old convent on a quiet and attractive quayside not far from the old town. The star attraction is the stunning glass-roofed hotel bar and resturant in the central cloister. Drinks and food prices are above average for Lille but not excessively so. The hotel rooms are large, comfortable and well appointed by 4-star standards, with marble bathrooms, tea and coffee-making facilities and a large flat-screen TV. Perhaps one of the reasons for the mixed reviews is that the Alliance has a prodominantly business clientele and is quite quiet at weekends. Nevertheless, I have no problem recomending it for a tourist stay in the city. The main town square is a 10-minute walk.
