I'm officially 52 years old! The entire month of January has been celebrating with my amazing family and friends. Tonight was no different, celebrating with my dear friend daisy! I had been very curious about this place, being that it has a rooftop bar and that's not very common in the gables. So we came to dinner here and boy, they did not disappoint! I have never had salsa as fresh as a salsa that I had here. Most places make the guacamole table side, but this place makes a salsa table side and it is the most delicious salsa you will ever have. The chicken tinga quesadillas were to die for, and my friend had the fish tacos which she really liked! We also had the classic margaritas which were delicious and if you don't want it too sweet, you can always ask them to remove the agave. I also had the Malbec which was fantastic. The Mariachis were a great touch! So much fun especially when you're celebrating a special occasion. Beautiful Gables restaurant with lots of staff. Roberto was our server, and he was great! The Tamarind Margarita was delicious ($17) the Guacamole Mexicano en Molcajete with chicharrónes ($18) very tasty and the Complementary Salsa Roja de Molcajete amazing! This sauce was my favorite with the warm crispy chips. We ordered to share the Chamorro Horneado ($36) and it wasn't my favorite as we felt should have been more tender and perhaps falling off the bone. The ambiance on the terrace even when it was hot it was so gorgeous and great vibes! We also went to the first floor for dinner, we had a very good time the only negative part was our server (Bruno), not too friendly or helpful, he seemed bothered by us and took a long time every time we needed his attention, thankfully the rest of the staff was amazing, specially Amanda who helped us at the end of the night to pay! What a beautiful place! In the front you have the hostess greeting you in colorful traditional Mexican costume. Then you walk thru to the elevator where we head to the rooftop for our team party. What a view from the top you can see the coral gables skyline. The decor was vibrant with a beautiful mural that really shows the Mexican spirit. The margaritas were delicious. I had the traditional and spicy. We were served guacamole and chips. Chicken quesadilla, fish tacos, Brirria tacos, and carne asada tacos. I think it's an amazing spot for a date night or for a night with friends. The interior was spectacular and unique, it's rare to see a restaurant with such unique and detailed approach to its design. The ceviches were amazing! The elote I didn't really like because the corn was a bit hard, maybe it wasn't for me. The non-alcoholic drinks were very yummy and my favorite was the strawberry cucumber water. A con for me was that the portions are pretty small so just keep that in mind when you order. I came in not expecting much based on the relatively low reviews. But i LOVED this place. It's huge and decorated so beautifully, i was transported straight to Oaxaca, Mexico! The colors were stunning, and i love the exposed open kitchen on the first floor. Our waiter was super friendly and attentive! We had a few martinis (one passionfruit, one watermelon). We ordered the guacamole to start (not the infamous one with the insects, we weren't brave enough for that) but it was delicious! it came in a molcajete (make sure you utilize the lime, cilantro, and onion that comes on the side). The tortilla chips are homemade. They gave us a sample of their fish soup, which was fishy, but very good. I added lime to this. I think it was their caldo de pollo. For mains we had: -TRÍO DE TACOS DE CARNE ASADA: delicious marinated carne -AGUACHILE DE CAMARÓN- one of the best dishes I've had in a long time! Green spicy broth with the big juicy shrimp paired so nicely with the sweet pomegranate seeds and crunchy cucumber and avocado. Out of this world! -CEVICHE ACAPULQUEÑO DE CAMARÓN- Red broth the shrimp paired great with the olives -FISH TACOS- delicious breaded fish with sweet crunchy slaw My one problem is the three different menus on the three different floors. I had FOMO! Were there better plates on the other floors that I would have liked better? I wish i could have looked at all the menus... I had made a reservation for Saturday night and when we arrived it was almost ready. Hardly had to wait... but we enjoyed having a cocktail by the bar. Once our table was ready, they brought us up to our table... the restaurant is separated in smaller areas , and I guess each one has its own ambiance.... ours, was to the left of the elevators as you came out, and it seemed a bit less active than the other dining areas. There is a live Mariachi band that plays in all areas, but apparently, they had already been to ours not long ago.. and they do not come back. So if your seating time doesn't fall within the time of the music in that room... you are out of luck. Anyway, back to the food, which is what matters most. Once seated, our waiter was quick to come and introduce himself and offered to get us drinks asap. Also, the chips and salsa to your level of heat came fast, and they were really good. We also had the fish ceviche in a passion fruit sauce, which.... the sauce overpowered the fish, which lacked seasoning. For the main course, we had the sea bass in a green mole sauce (also needed seasoning) and the Octopus, which was good but nothing I would probably say you must have. Just okay. Overall, the dining experience was just average. Food can definitely improve. I was craving those bold flavors that mexican cuisine usually brings and didn't find it here. read more

It has three floors, and each one has a different concept. During this visit, my friend and I went to the bar on the first floor, where the happy hour specials were available. We ordered Esquite Traditional Mexicano, Duo de Tacos de Carne Asada, Duo de Tacos de Birria, and Margaritas de Maracuya, and I also tried the Margarita de Tamarindo. Everything we ordered was terrific. The margaritas were well balanced; the maracuya was better than the tamarindo one for me. The Tacos de Birria was AMAZING; the beef was tender and juicy, and the consomé was perfect. The birria was good on its own, and when you dipped it in the consomé, it was even better. The carne asada in the tacos de carne asada was also tender and had good flavor. The Esquite was okay for me; it was too dry for my preference. Overall, Maiz and Agave were amazing. The aesthetics are impressive, as is the food. I will return to try the other levels and enjoy drinks at their rooftop section once this Miami rain season passes. read more

New Mexican cuisine in the area with mediocre food with a good variety of tequila cocktails. Each floor provides a different option. 3rd floor is appetizers and drinks. We had the guacamole which was great and the lobster taco as well, but the sea bass in mole, the ceviche, and the beef tartar were less than appetizing. One of the most beautifully designed restaurants in the Coral Gables area. Every detail was considered fully and each area has the perfect soul ambience. The service is awesome right front the start as a hostess escorts you up the elevators to your table. We chose to dine on the second floor. I believe on this floor they have the most dinner food options and it's also more upscale. All the food we had was great. I especially loved the salsa that they make at the table. It was so unique from your reg salsa and so fresh! Another must try is the octopus. It was delicious! I can't wait to come back to try more food and also try the food the other areas have to offer. The drinks were magnificent and strong, just how I like them! Maiz y Agave has a lot to offer as each floor has a different concept. We were explained this. First floor is more casual, lunch vibes. The dish came with 3 pieces of extra tiny shrimp $38 We did not have a great experience, the menu was in Spanish only, no English menu available, which is ok but the server did not do a good job explaining the menu. The Christmas menu had a few items from the regular menu, we ordered items from both sections of the menu: the Pescado alla Veracruzana was good, everything else was a disappointment. Side note: the sinks from both toilets were out of service everyone had to wash their hands in a sink that is located outside the toilet. I had the tlayuda, which is definitely shareable. I recommend as an app with like 5-6 people because it is the size of a pizza. Great flavor, could feel the char of the tortilla and the beans, could use a bit more flavor in the actual toppings, but overall would recommend. Specially if you're never had tlayudas. Had heard a lot of things about this restaurant before such as it being pricey for the type of food it is but glad i was able to try it through the holiday party. The restaurant was absolutely beautiful and loved that it had different floors. Not sure exactly what each floor serves or if its all the same. Had the guacamole and chips which went well paired with a Margarita. As an entree had the lobster tacos, they had a little kick to it but overall pretty good. Seems like they spent more time on selecting dishes instead of working on flavors. Duck tamale, dry and flavorless, helped by the mole sauce but even that was thick and pasty. Cochinita privilege, more blandness. None of the dishes had any depth or showed a creative imagination. Desert was forgettable. Upstairs dining area was not and humid. The bathrooms were sweltering....left side bathrooms sink was not working - simply unacceptable. Coral,Gables used to represent quality restaurants and this place is just doesn't cut it. The place is very beautiful and has a lot of hype, but honestly the experience was very disappointing. The service was terrible. The waiter forgot to put in orders, and the drinks were poorly made. We ordered reposado tequila, and they gave us house tequila instead. We told the waiter, and he kept insisting it was reposado, but it clearly was not. I drink reposado often at home, so I know exactly how it tastes. The food was much better than the service. The octopus with achiote was excellent. The mole was okay, but nothing special. After that we went to the bar, and it was even worse. The space is way too small and uncomfortable, people constantly bump into each other, and you can't really enjoy yourself. I ordered another drink and watched the bartender make it right in front of me -- again, the tequila did not taste like reposado at all. It's disappointing that on top of the poor treatment and low-quality service, they also add extra charges to everything. As a Mexican restaurant, the place looks beautiful, but the overall experience is extremely overrated. I would never go back. Nothing extraordinary at all. read more

We stopped into Maíz y Agave for lunch- I mean how could you miss it with the aggressive quantity of overflowing pink Bougainvillea, and what an experience it was. The atmosphere is spectacularly dramatic--every detail feels thought out, and it sets the stage for a memorable meal. The waitstaff were not only courteous but also incredibly helpful in guiding us through the menu, suggesting three standout items. First up: the insect tacos (grasshoppers and worms). My husband was enamored with the guac and cheese portion, but a little less enthusiastic about the bugs themselves--meanwhile, I loved them! The fresh tortillas deserve their own mention: outstanding, and prepared in a unique way that really elevated the dish. We also ordered the scallop ceviche. For us, the coconut milk made it a touch too sweet, but if that's your flavor preference, it's definitely a solid choice. The lamb tacos, however, were absolute perfection--tender, rich, and deeply satisfying. We were graciously treated to complimentary soup, as well as tableside roasted pepper salsa, customized exactly to our heat preference (in our case, very hot). A thoughtful touch that added to the experience. To drink, I went with a watermelon margarita, which I asked to be made "skinny." It was so delicious and refreshing that I couldn't resist ordering a second--honestly one of the best margaritas I've ever had. The flavors were strong overall but authentic. The mole negro was good but the taste of mole was very overpowering. My wife had the Chamorro horneado and that was very good; probably one of the best dishes the table had. They brought us complimentary crickets/ants dish on the house which was a nice surprise, I guess, but not for everyone. All fun and games until legs got stuck in my teeth. This restaurant is in a beautiful building using 3 floors. It's well decorated and has a great ambiance. The service was kind of slow, but it was a very busy Sunday the last date for the day of the death display which they did a fantastic job decorating. But of course for a restaurant to truly be successful the food needs to be amazing and I think that's where they are lacking. The cocktails we ordered were amazing, but the food nothing to write about. Just ok. Not bad, but also not great. If they want to keep this beautiful restaurant going strong they need to get their food better.
