They regularly have instore promotions on wines, beers and spirits and the staff are very helpful and friendly. There is a cigarette counter and a good selection of soft drinks aswell. The opening hours are what you would expect from an off licence. The decor is light and airy and always looks clean and inviting. Overall a great smaller branch of Wine Rack that serves the local community perfectly.

The beer isn't just your run of the mill stella. Instead it is a selection of bottled beers from both the UK and overseas which are more unusual. I haven't worked my way through them all (yet) but there are no doubt lots of enjoyment to be had doing so. Of those sampled so far the beer brewed by the Redchurch Brewary has been particularly good, if a little pricey.

They provide a good sampling of various types and regions (from complex Bordeaux to sakes), and everyone there is able to speak with some knowledge about any of the offerings (inc a limited selection of spirits and liqueurs as well). The manager of the shop is so well-spoken and knowledgeable about the offerings, you can't help but to wonder where he finds the time to do anything else with himself! The shop also offers a series of supper clubs in the downstairs area, and these events are terrific. We just attended a 5-course vegetarian meal with wine pairings by an up-and-coming chef who'd done time in some of London's best kitchens--and it was such a great experience. The wine was well-paired and explained, and the food was sensational. Plus the friendly ambiance and setting just made for a perfect evening. This shop just adds to the embarrassment of riches in this area, and especially on cold winter's days, I'm very grateful for its proximity to home!

The transformation is remarkable and this new store is well laid out and full of hard-to-find and specialist wines, many of which you can try using their novel Enomatics machines - self-service wine machines. You buy a top-up card and start sampling. I went in on a whim and found myself asking for a very specific NZ Riesling - and came away with a bottle of Pikes 2008 Riesling from the Clare Valley in Australia, a great companion to Vietnamese food from Namo, around the corner. Never would have thought of going in here before but now I'd recommend it, especially for events.

We were both really craving a chilled glass of wine. With great urgency, I googled "wine" and found that I was standing 25 meters from a wine bar. Laithwaits (wine shop with a focus on unique international wines) boasts its own wine bar and tasting room called the Arch Bar and we got there just in time for Happy Hour. Got a couple glasses each of their dry whites and loved the variety and ability to taste them before ordering. 3£ per glass. Great place to come with groups as they have a large community style tasting table in the middle. Would definitely try and find my way back here next time I am in London!

Though I love the 24 hour store, their wine selection is poor and generally more expensive. Clissold Wines is a friendly family-run store which has an excellent selection of low-mid price wines, spirits and beers. They always run a few cheap offers in big wooden crates next to the door- I went in last night and they had 3 different 3 for 10 pound white wine offers. As well as inexpensive offerings, they also have an excellent range of riojas and sancerres from about 12 pounds upwards. The staff are friendly and helpful and have two beautiful cats who sit behind the till.

There is always a bargain to be had, which is why I keep going back. The specials are often at give-away prices. I also keep going back because I love the people who run the store. There are a few rather posh wine shops in the area, and I am grateful that Clissold is not one of them. Church street can get a it carried away with its prices sometimes, and Clissold keeps it down to earth.

Today I called Philglas & Swiggot and inquired about Brazilian liquor - Cachaça. (Guess what - we're having a Brazilian-themed Happy Hour at the office ;-). Unfortunately, they don't carry it, but the person on the phone was very helpful nevertheless and pointed me to a shop where I would definitely find Cachaça: at Gerry's in Soho. Luckily they carry a good selection of wines from many other parts of the world as well. The selection from South Africa was respectable but there are better places for it in London as well (check my other wine store reviews). Service was really friendly and extremely knowledgeable and helpful (great recommendations for other places to go to as well). The selection of wine dis however to some extent fail to excite me so while a respectable selection of wines I only found a few things that really got me interested. As they did not really have much to taste I did not really feel like picking up that much but ended up buying some 'house' champagne Louis Barthelemy Brut at a decent price. It is one of three outlets and I am yet to check out the others as well but this is a goos choice if close to Marble Arch and in need of wine.
