Food was so yummy! The broth was super flavorful and well-balanced. It was hot outside, but somehow we decided to eat hot pot:) Honestly, I have no idea what we were thinking, probably just craving mala tang that badly. Thankfully, the A/C inside was nice and cool, so it was actually the perfect place to enjoy a hot bowl of hot pot. It's self-service too, so you can grab as much as you want and customize your bowl exactly how you like it! Just don't forget your wallet has a limit lolol. My first visit was $32, but the second time I managed to keep it at $17!! Definitely coming back again!

Went on a Saturday afternoon, been a fan of Malatown for a long time! This time around I wasn't too thrilled with the service. My order was served to someone else and a minute later was tried to be served to me. They claimed that it was brand new and even offered to remake it which was nice. But at this point, I have been waiting for so long that I've lost my appetite. While I try not to let one bad experience ruin my whole perception of a place, it was pretty disappointing how they handled it. Not one apology was said to the other person who was served my order or to me. Probably won't be back for a while at this location. I definitely urge you to try Malatown at their other locations! Malatown is still delicious overall and have been happy with all of them

Went here for a quick lunch during my work break, and it was delicious Mala Town is located in a cute plaza full of fun Asian cuisines, where is there is plenty of parking. The restaurant itself has a lot of seating available, and the employees are kind and polite. The ambiance is very chill, especially since I went for a Monday late lunch. There are numerous food options that are very yummy. There is an assortment of meats, veggies, noodles, and more! There is also a DIY sauce bar with a handful of sauces and toppings like cilantro and green onion. Personally, I like to load it up so that way I have enough for 2 meals. If you have enough for leftovers, they have containers available for take home. They also offer to-go which is awesome if you're on a time crunch. Overall, love going here for my malatang fix. It's so good!! :)

Stopped by MalaTown in Pleasanton and built my perfect bowl - you grab everything you want (and they have everything) and pay by weight. Had to load up on my must-haves: fish balls with roe, enoki mushrooms, quail eggs, udon, veggies, and LOTS of beef belly + premium beef. Then finished it off with sesame paste, chili oil, and green onions from the sauce bar (they didnt have ponzu ) I went with the tom yum broth (spicy + sour = my fave), but my fiancé got the spicy dry pot with this peanut sauce and it was too flavorful with the perfect kick. Super clean space and really friendly staff, which always makes a difference.

Food: It's $16.99 per pound. They have a good selection of meat, seafood, veggies, and noodles. The meat was tender and the veggies were fresh! I got the tom yum soup base. It wasn't too spicy, but very coconut heavy. Staff: They staff here is super friendly and attentive! I accidently dropped a beef ball and after picking it up, the lady staff member offered to help me throw it away and gave me more napkins!

The staff is very accommodating for our party of 9 on a Saturday! We came at 5 PM and they helped set up the tables for us. Very clean and spacious setting with plenty of tables for big and small parties! The staff is attentive and checked in for more water and napkins. You pretty much get all the ingredients you want at the start and put it in a bowl (theres meats, veggies, noodles, and more!) They weigh it and it's priced based on that. Then you choose the broth and they cook all the ingredients in it. I got the mild signature beef broth which is a good standard soup to get! It was actually milky and had a good flavor with the veggies and meats I got. Since it's called Mala Town the mala flavor is def there. Def would come back!

LOVE Mala Town and the concept! YOU get to pick what you want and how much. You walk in, grab tongs and a bowl and go through a line of different food items that you can add to your bowl. Anything from greens (spinach, cabbage so forth), mushrooms, proteins, other vegetables, and noodles. Then you choose if you want it to be a soup or stir fry and they weigh your bowl and you pay. While you wait they have a sauce bar with an assortment of options to add. I appreciate the aesthetic of the bowls and how the whole location is decorated. Customer service is ok, but I come here for the food which I 100% recommend.

First time trying Mala Town and took my whole family! Each of us got a different broth and I would have to say the classic bone broth was most impressionable. Other places usually have super super light bone broth but this one has the most flavor! The signature bone broth is slightly salty especially when it cools down . I would say the tomato broth is at the bottom of the list for me (still good). Very spacious parking lot and in a great location too. I do wish they had more toppings options but still more than some other places! Would recommend if you're already in the area and looking for a new place for try

I ordered a mala xiangguo to go and when I tasted it, it was not mala xiangguo at all! There is no mala, the sauce was basically peanut butter, and half of the stuffs were not sauced. The tofu skin was clumped together. I ordered beef but lamb was put in instead. I went back into the store, the employee was very apologetic and made me a much larger malatang. She was incredibly nice and professional but the second time she still gave me lamb instead of beef. I also realized that the chef in the back was also not Chinese. This Mala Town branch clearly failed to train its employees well for them to be making these mistakes! It really is a shame considering how good the other Mala Towns in the Bay Area are. The manager of this branch ought to be ashamed.

The restaurant has a clean, open space with plenty of seating. Prices are reasonable, though I wish I had gotten their signature soup at medium. The mild version had barely any spice (the mildest I've tried among malatang soup bases). They have a sauce bar, good service, and a wide variety of meats and vegetables, making it easy to customize your meal.

Did you go down to Mala Town? Well we did. And we kind of wished that we stuck with our regular restaurant across the freeway, Zhangliang Malatang. Lol! Seriously though, there were some hits and some misses. Let's start with the good. The restaurant itself is large and spacious. The buffet bar area is also more spread out and it was easy to pick the items we wanted. Selection of toppings was also pretty good. Staff were polite and helpful, but they were not very cheerful. There was an ample amount of sauces to choose from. I really liked the beef bone broth base (mild) - it had good flavors and didn't seem horribly greasy. I will say the mild is still pretty darn spicy. I would not recommend it to kids or other people who are spice intolerant. We really loved the beautiful metal bowls that the soup came in. The food also came out pretty quickly and it was steaming hot. But the restaurant was very empty on a weekday for early dinner. The hand cut noodles were some of the best noodle offerings. I thought their Ramen was a little too soft. Things that were not good: missing tags on some of the toppings. We had no idea what some items were. And dirt on some of the vegetables and mushrooms...I wanted more of both, but it wasn't easy to locate clean pieces. One of the worst things were the prawns with the heads and shells still on them. These were clearly not defrosted properly, and likely soaked in water, given how incredibly mushy they were. They would not even stay together after you took them out of the shells! We were very sad that we wasted our precious ounces on them!! We threw some away without even eating them. Definitely avoid these. The de-shelled shrimp were better, but they still had a strong preservative taste. They were missing green onions in the toppings station. The cilantro was also looking kind of wilted and yellow on the edges. The minced garlic looked really good though. The fish maw chicken broth base is very weak and lacking in flavor. However, it is actually mild. The tomato broth base has a little bit of flavoring in it that kind of reminds me of rhubarb. It is not a pure tomato soup if that is what you are expecting. One kid was okay with it, the other one was not. It seemed kind of expensive for what it was. For three bowls of soup and toppings, it was nearly $100 after tax and tip. We did have some soup left over for the next day, but we added more noodles to it. There is some loyalty program you can join that will probably give you a better discount. Overall, it was okay, and we will probably not be returning, but trying out some other malatang places or going back to our usual spot, Zhangliang Malatang.

I visited their San Mateo location which was really good so I was just a bit disappointed with this location. Don't get me wrong, the broths are still really good and I love that they have an additional sauce bar but all of the meat was just extremely overcooked and dry. Service was efficient and friendly otherwise. read more

What a fun spot to try! Lots of seating inside and many options. Fair warning: no need to fill up the bowl entirely unless you're super hungry! I made that mistake and definitely had leftovers! I tried the tom yum soup base and it was great, I didn't need any dipping sauce on the side because the broth was so flavorful already. Very yummy and lots of options! Ordered a dry-pot mix, which was just mildly spicy in a peanut sauce. The sauce bar with herbs, Sichuan peppercorn oil, and chili oil helped bring it to a proper spice level. This place is new! I was so excited to see a build your own hot pot when I was around. The ingredients are plentiful and fresh. Very fun to make the soups and my soup was delicious. Everything went well, explained well as well, and long choices bar very visual w tings and large bowl for weighing after getting. Need to weigh in almost a pound prior to broth. Currently 7x choices and 2 mild spiced for grandma. Lots of choices for beverage. Canned or bottled. Other locations. Great ac opened just weeks ago. We liked the service and being g out in nice hot pan. We'll organized and tasty too! Had Tom Young Broth and a great Litchee bubbly drink was perfect. Yes they have no sugar options for bottled beds. First time here and I'd say I would come back for some solid soup. Very spacious and casual, would come here with friends for sure. Great selection, maybe need more on the meat side and their meat quality is okay. However, love their other sides like their variety of vegetables, tofu and fish balls. Just know, the spicier your soup, the more oily it is, but thats the only trade off. They have a decent sauce bar and love what they use for their soups, great at retaining heat. Me and my partner got the sichuan soup and I got their new beef bone soup. Good recommendations, both tasty. Maybe it needs more depth, but again, decent overall and the service is nice. Oh, almost forgot, their homemade yogurt... I WOULD COME BACK JUST TO GET IT tehe. read more

Wanted to try someplace new before shopping at the outlets, so decided to give this place a try. I didn't like the classic bone broth, which ruined it for me. It was extremely creamy, like cheesy?? You could literally smell it, it was so overpowering. I think "creamy" or "cheese" broth would have been a better name for it. It did not taste like any bone broth I've had before. I tried my bf's mild signature bone broth and that tasted like most other mala bone broths, just not numbingly hot since it was mild (which I really appreciate the they allow you to choose your spice level for that one, as I cannot handle a lot of spice). Meat selection was average (but I did like that they had a lean beef and fatty beef), but I felt produce, seafood, and noodle selection was more limited than other places. I appreciated that they didn't have a minimum weight because I usually get under 1 lb and that way I can get my kids their own bowl to share (instead of having to put their stuff in my bowl and picking a broth based on their preferences, instead of my own). Interior nice and clean. Service meh. Sauce bar was sufficient. TLDR; I would recommend Zhangliang Malatang instead because I think their broth is better and they have a bit more selection. read more

Food was great! My boyfriend and I were afraid it wasn't enough broth based on the pictures and reviews on here but I believe it's just a different pot/bowl compared to similar places! It was just the right amount. The bowls may look small in the picture but, it's more wide than depth and it has a generous amount of broth. I would say I do prefer this type of plating than a regular bowl. We also came around Saturday afternoon with seeing only few people inside already, not as busy as I thought it would be. They played some old nostalgic music which we were both very appreciative about haha. The staff was very nice, have no complaints for service. Overall first experience here was 10/10. We were excited to see another malatang restaurant open in the East Bay but unfortunately, it missed the mark and we won't be coming back. Some labels were missing from the toppings and some were empty. When we got to the sauce station, there were quite a few fruit flies flying around. Looking into the sesame oil pot, there were a number of them drowned in the bottom of the pot. The green onions were low and it was all soggy. Halfway through eating, we found a fruit fly in the bowl of soup. After that, we saw the worker clear dirty bowls from the dining tables, take the freshly cooked food bowls from the kitchen and work the cashier all with the same gloves. The only "cleaning" of the gloves was wiping it with a rag. I hate leaving negative reviews but all these red flags are highly unsanitary practices. We had high hopes for this place but we'll be sticking to our usual YGF and Zhangliang. read more

Been waiting for Mala Town to open and it didn't disappoint! We waited about 20-30 min, but I think that was only because of their opening promotion of 50% off. Broth was flavorful compared to AYCE hot pot! I never sip on my soup at hot pot but found myself having a spoon of soup every other bite. I am subtracting a star because I feel like the meat could be of greater quality - Wagyu beef is advertised but wasn't at the bar. Their "marbled beef" was a bit chewy. But because the broth was yummy and the concept is convenient as well as the kind customer service, I would come here again! OH, and they have Konjac noodles for those on keto/low carb or GF! read more

First time around the service was great and the food was yummy. The place is spacious and offers a lot at the sauce bar. Tried to go on a Friday night. Arrived at 9:05p and they close at 10p, no one else was in the line making their bowls and midway into making our bowls we were told it is only to go as they close at 9:30p. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up as it showed on Google and Yelp they close 10p. Would still come back at a different time, but definitely felt mislead with the closing times. read more

The food didn't blow us away, but service was quick and portions were decent. My daughter didn't eat much of her miso soup, and we ended up taking most of it and some of the Kara-age home. Be careful parking on the street as the City of Pleasanton has special weekend no-parking hours because of the long lines for meadowlark dairy nearby (we got a $50 ticket!).

I found the lamb to be a bit better quality than buffets, fried egg old and stale (the only disappointment), green veggies quite a surprising delight (I usually don't eat that). Pig intestines, beef tendon are well cooked and seasoned, which were also delightful.

Otherwise it's located in a really great area relatively close to some shopping areas such as the Livermore outlets or even other smaller shopping plazas. The interior leans more modern while still paying homage to traditional Vietnamese decor. Pho is great and all, but the Three Little Bears have found a new dish that's neither too hot nor too cold -- Bo Ne. Bo Ne is one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes, and it's hard to find places that serve it. Even fewer places do it just right, making me feel like Goldilocks. I love the banh mi that comes with the Bo Ne because it has a thin, crunchy, flaky crust with a fluffy, soft inside that absorbs the sauce perfectly. The steak was tender and paired perfectly with the pâté, giving you that satisfying flavor that constantly has you reaching for more. Once you place your order, the food comes out super fast. No Big Bad Wolf here to blow your wallet down because the prices are affordable and the portions are large. Huff and puff as hard as you can, but this place is here to stay. I got a singles combo with tom yum soup base. It was a good amount of food. I chose one of the Wagyu, and the side items I chose were tendon, fish, and if I also chose something else, I forgot. It came with a lot of veggies such as greens and mushroom. Guess I mixed and "created" my sauces right cause they went well with the stuff. Cooking the meat was so quick, so pretty much not much wait time to enjoy some food. Others chose some different cuts of beef, some lamb (?), quail eggs, and more. A bit pricey, but the stuff was super fresh and things were really quick so it was worth it to me.

You get to build your own hotpot just the way you like it, and the whole experience felt so fun and unique. The service was great -- everything was clearly labeled, fresh, and well-stocked. The restaurant itself is super clean and has a nice, comfortable layout -- not too big or too small. I went to this newly opened malatang place today. The dishes looked okay, but the meat was so dry it felt like chewing on tree roots... I ordered their signature beef bone soup, but it tasted like plain water with no flavor at all. Sigh... Overall......I don't think it's worth the price. read more

The malatang here is really good. The broth has a nice spicy flavor without being too overwhelming, and the ingredients are fresh and tasty. The place is clean, and the staff are polite and quick. It's a solid choice if you're craving malatang and want something satisfying. read more

Very fresh ingredients and station is very clean. I like the chicken fish maw soup. Have not been here for a long time. This is my 3rd or 4th time here. I pick the ingredients and the kitchen cooks the broth and the food. I wish they still have oysters and the mini abalone. read more
