Down side: the Fish & Chips were downright weird. The supposed fresh Cod had an odd tinny taste with a very light, Asian-like batter. My husband and I came to Malt looking for a casual, but good, place to eat for our 1 Year Anniversary. We were a little beat after walking around all day and weren't up for anything super fancy. I knew I was going to love Malt the moment I walked in. The atmosphere is great, low lighting, lots of high top tables, rustic but sitll high end. We were seated promptly, but we went at almost 9pm and it was early May. That being said, the place was definitely still busy. Its off the beaten downtown Newport trail, but it still gets packed. My husand was thrilled that they have a big craft beer menu. Im currently expecting, so I couldnt sample any of the super creative, fun looking drinks, but they looked amazing. We started with what seems to be the most highly recommend item - the Thai Shrimp Nachos. They were every bit as good as I expected....even better! The cocounut thai flavor is so rich and creamy and actually pais perfetly with the salty chips. Some of the chips get a little chewy as they soak up the sauce.... so good. Then, my husband got the rosemary burger and i had the steak panini (without the blue cheese). I am not kidding you when i say the steak on my panini was actually some of THE best steak Ive ever had. It was so incredibily tender, not at all what you expect when you get a panini. The flavors were incredible. My husband said it was an equally amazing burger- on his top 10 list. We were so happy with both of our meals. The only (very) sad part of our even came when they were out of their chocolate mousse dessert (chocolate bomb?). Love this new little place! Its in the location where Tuckers used to be on Broadway. They redid it w some fresh colors and eliminated all the clutter that tuckers had. They still have a few throwbacks to tuckers like the mismatched silverware, the b&b plates and the salt & pepper shakers, but other than that, its all pretty much new. The food is great, mostly American fare and its CHEAP. They have a small plates menu where everything is pretty much $7-$10. They do have an entree section thats small but wonderful. The Ribeye is amazing and like $24! They cheese plate I think, is the best in town, and trust me, I know cheese plates. The only thing that needs to be fixed is the Bread that comes w the cheese plate. The 1st time I got it, it was sliced thin and not toasted at all, then second time, it was a different kind of bread, and only lightly toasted. This causes a problem cause it makes it almost impossible to put anything on it cause it just crumbles into dust. Also, the Burger bun, needs some reassessment. Its very dense, almost cake like. We all (3 of us) ate the burger, but left the bun. Its just too much and over powers the burger which is great. Also, the mushroom risotto is amazing. Ive gotten it twice, and let me tell you, it can be a meal in its self. And its only $7. These people are going to do great. They are also going to give Norey's a run for their money. They have a great beer list and some great cocktails. The wine list needs some serious help though. Really enjoyed my quick visit tonight. I ate at the bar by myself on business here alone. Dan the bartender has a lot of experience. Recently came home from NYC working at a lot of establishments. His most recent was at the Red Rooster in Harlem. Very personable as was his side kick Teddy. I enjoyed the petite filet. Our waitress was an absolute gem, attentive, knowledgeable and very helpful. We had an order of the mussels to start. Absolutely amazing, loved the buttery broth and the mussels were fresh and sweet. My wife and I have a second home in Newport and we are always looking for new restaurants. We wanted to go to Malt but without a website, we were reluctant to go without seeing a menu. Fortunately, Malt is participating in Restaurant Week and its menu for Restaurant Week was posted on the website for Restaurant Week. We are sooooo glad that we went last Saturday evening. My wife had the beet salad and salmon.. Both were outstanding and she claims that the beet salad was the best she ever had. I had the Thai shrimp nachos and the Flatiron Steak. I added french fries to my order. The steak was served exactly as I had ordered which many restaurants can't seem to accomplish. The fries were outstanding and the cinnamon ice cream was great. The food was excellent but the service at the bar Friday night (3/24/17) was horrible. We went a couple of weeks back on Friday night before St. Patrick's Day Parade and we had 2 bar tenders that were really nice and couldn't done any more to make sure our dinner was perfect. This past Friday night was like we had to beg for service the bar tender was too busy catering to the group of regulars at the bar. After the 1st drink it was like we didn't exist, we had to constantly be asking him for attention to get anything. Then we had to ask for the bill multiple times and then still had to chase him to finally run the credit card. Disappointing because like they have good food. They need to teach the bar tender to work the bar equally for all customers. Unfortunately we won't be going back, we are locals too but there are plenty of other places in town that have better staff tending bar. read more

This restaurant was absolutely delicious and the staff was great! We came to Newport for the 4th, and went here for dinner. The staff was so amazing, they even accommodated my dietary restrictions with their burger and beer special (they gave me chicken instead!). Made a reservation for a Saturday night 6pm for 3 people. My only complaint about this place is the itty bitty table we were seated at. The food was stellar and the drink selection was massive. Our server, Donald, was friendly, attentive, professional and witty. We had the Thai shrimp nachos and the eggplant crostini to start. If you love shrimp, creamy curry sauce, lemongrass and the idea of crispy wanton nachos then you'll love this app. The eggplant crostini was fresh and tasty. You gotta love a place that keeps a huge, fresh bowl of water out on the sidewalk for the likes of ME, so I can mingle with my peeps at happy hour. This new addition to Broadway is a fresh take on the Irish pub with a menu that is way more sophisticated and modern. Love the farm burger (i.e. grass-fed beef)! You can get it dressed any way you like, even caramelized onions, though I can't eat caramelized onions because onions are like Kryptonite to D O G S. The Thai shrimp nachos are a fun favorite appetizer...I could lap up a bowl of the yummy curry sauce on its own. Fish & chips feature a pan-sauteed filet which probably lowers the calorie count just enough so you can order dessert without flinching. And of course, a nice selection of beer. read more

Came up to Newport for a few days and luckily, caught the tail end of Restaurant Week. Spoke to a few locals that highly recommended Norey's but came to learn they close on Sundays. Right next door was another place called Malt. They had signage in front displaying Restaurant Week and people were bustling in and out... both good signs in my opinion. $30 per person for app, entree and dessert. Can't beat that deal so I gave it a go! Walked in to a wait of 40 minutes, got the last bar spot, about to order a drink and bing bang boom, table was ready. We ordered the signature Thai Shrimp Nachos and the Calamari... both delicious, but I would say be "typical" and go for the nachos. The curry sauce was simply perfection, tortilla crisps tasted homemade and held up with the sauce i.e. did not get soggy. Shrimp comes out whole, but I cut it up to get a piece in each bite... worked out well. For the entrees, we went with the Scallops and the Flank Steak (med rare). Both good, but the steak reigned supreme, sauce added just enough sweetness and moisture to the meat. Mashed potatoes whipped to perfection. Finally, dessert! I would rarely go with a pudding, but read the headline for Butterscotch Pudding topped with crystallized ginger and whipped cream... too good to pass up (I'm a huge ginger fan). I was not disappointed. A great end to a wonderful meal. My only regret was not ordering the pumpkin risotto off the regular menu. But I like to idea of having something to look forward to when I go back. Highly recommend this spot if you are in the Newport area! read more

I have to preface this review with a disclaimer: I came here only for the scotch.. and they have a great selection at a great price! They have many core expressions as well distiller's editions, like Ardbeg Corryvreckan and Dalwhinnie's distiller's edition. As far as the other malts are concerned they seemed to have just as an extensive selection. The wait staff was helpful and the atmosphere was cozy with a few televisions. We came here for dinner on Easter Sunday and it was pretty dead. We got to sit in the window seat and service was prompt and pleasant. My fiancé loved the draught beer options and I was happy with the house wine. We ordered the Thai shrimp nachos and duck confit spring rolls to start. The other reviews are not lying, the nachos were unbelievable! I could have had two orders of that and still not had enough. The spring rolls were also good, but a little greasy. We split the Malt burger for dinner. It was perfectly cooked and I loved the sweetness from the caramelized onions and the punch in the face from the blue cheese. The bun wasn't my favorite though. It was a little dense and flavorless. As if that weren't enough food, we also shared the Malt chocolate bomb for dessert. That whole thing was amazing! We'll be in town this summer for our wedding and we'll definitely come back and probably bring our friends and family. It was so good! read more

First of all, if I could give a million stars for somewhere this would be it. I was a little hesitant about going her because they don't have a website besides facebook and I like to examine the menu before going somewhere. The restaurant is a very cozy intimate atmosphere. We came for a late dinner and arrived around 8:40 there were a few tables on the dining room side. When we first sat down it was a bit loud due to a group of girls sitting nearby. Luckily, the left a few minutes into us being there and my fiance and I were admiring the table in the windowsill that had cushions. The waitress must have read our mind because she asked us if we would like to move to that table and get cozy - so YES we did. We started with the smoked salmon crostinis which we beyond amazing. We also had the fish tacos which were pretty good but nothing to die for, the taco wrap was bit thick and fell apart. We then split the steak frites meal which was DELICIOUS! Sold at truffle fries and the steak was very tender. The waitress even split the meal on two plates for us without even asking. Elena, the waitress made this meal so much more enjoyable. She went above and beyond to make us enjoy our experience. I can't say enough kind words for Elena and how any restaurant that has her working for them is a must visit! I am thinking about making that 4 hour drive back up to Newport to just eat there again! ** Also get the chocolate bomb for desert. The hardened chocolate and ice cream were AMAZING. We just loved this place! We ended up here this past weekend because we needed a place that was open late after the improv show at the Firehouse Theater. Am I glad we did! First of all, the place is adorable. So comfortable and cozy. Love the eclectic decor. The menu is creative and every single thing we had, from our food to our drinks, was amazing. I had a hot toddy (first time ever trying one) because I was sadly starting my romantic weekend with my husband with a very bad cold, and it was delish. So was his Moscow Mule made with Tito's in a very cool Tito's mule mug (a thank you to the owner about how to get these). I also had an irish coffee that was perfect. The polenta fries and the Thai shrimp nachos were just insanely good. And to top it off, the background music was perfect (at least for us it was!!) - really good indie rock right up our alley. I'm so sad we live in NJ, and I want to go back to Newport just so I can eat at Malt again. Just an FYI - the photos I took look empty because it was about midnight when I took them. Went there during the Jazz Festival. Very good feed, tapas / small plates style. They have a Thai appetizer that we very good, in addition to "new preperation and presentation" of standards Very good selection of on tap beers, and bottled ones as well. Knowledgable bartenders, who will provide you with aromatic hops to throw in your glass. Do agree the wine list needs a little rethinking. Some colleagues at work recommended this place to me once it opened and I'm glad they did! In the last few months, I've been just twice, but both times the quality of food and service has been consistent. The first time we actually had a full meal, we decided to try the Thai Shrimp Nachos and Duck confit spring-rolls (I don't remember the exact name of the dish), and omg I just knew I've made the best decision with the shrimp nachos, that appetizer is definitely one of the best I've ever had, the sauce is a mix of coconut milk with curry, guaranteed to leave you wanting more! Don't get me wrong, the spring-rolls were good too. For entrees we decided on a burger and a chicken pasta (again, I can't remember the name of the dishes). Both were well presented, good portions and delicious! The second time in this place was to celebrate one of my roommates birthday. He absolutely loves the Shrimp nachos, so we ordered a few orders of those and drinks. We had dinner reservations at another establishment, but he loves those nachos so much that we had to go to Malt for appetizers! Again, great service and food! The bartender, without knowing it was his birthday, offered my roommate a large beer that he had poured by mistake. Even without knowing the special occasion, the staff just made his evening a little more special! I think the only complaint my party had was that they don't carry Newport Storm Beer, one of my friends works for Newport Storm, so he is always requesting it everywhere we go lol read more

I approached the owner And asked if we could work something out- pay for the drinks but not the god awful meal that none of us could stomach. Then this asshole has the audacity to tell me I was high. One of my friends grew up in nearby Narragansett and she told us that this was her favorite restaurant in RI. The place was quite busy when we had gone, but the service was still on point and our items came out quickly after ordering. I had a gnocchi dish for my main and my friends and I also split a cheese platter. My dish was heavy, but that's to be expected with gnocchi. I don't recall what drinks I had, unfortunately, but I'm sure that they were fine, albeit forgettable if I can't remember what I had.
