Mama Bessie's Place has become my go-to spiritual shop when I'm in the Charlotte area. Located in a small strip mall, I've never had any trouble accessing free parking right out front of the store. When you walk inside, you are invited to draw a free daily affirmation from a bowl that sits by the door, which is always a nice, welcoming detail. The main reason I go to Mama Bessie's is for the vast selection of herbs. Immediately to the right when you walk into the store, you'll find an entire wall of various herbs in small plastic bags -- all very reasonably priced. The variety is outstanding, and I've always been able to find what I'm looking for. In addition to herbs, there are tons of candles, incense, crystals, books...really a little bit of everything, along with an assortment of more unique items. The energy of the store, and the energy I get from the items I bring home with me are always positive. Truly a warm, welcoming, community-centered little haven. The energy of this place was very strong and almost overwhelming. I found several different stones i needed, as well as a Sun Wukong figurine. This place was great all of the reviews are accurate, place has a wide variety and welcoming atmosphere. What was NOT welcoming was the Hispanic female at the cashier today who inaccurately judged me and I almost felt was prejudice towards me. She decided to look at me dead in my eyes and tell me that I was a "negative energy" and even made hand gestures at her throat and mimicking that I was someone who was "controlling and impatient" in life. (Made hand symbols like when youre mimicking a chit-chatter) had an expression of disgust on her face also. As if she smelled a foul odor. Totally inaccurate and was downright disrespectful. My friend and I couldn't believe our ears! I can understand if she is just trying to make commission but that would still be the wrong way of going about it. I did politely ask her to bag each of my Stones individually, she may have thought I was being orderly?! I have no idea. I am a beginner and I was with a friend we were having such a nice time until HER negative energy came into play! I was in there very excited with all smiles and a wonderful energy about myself! It almost made me not want to return however I do know that the cashier will not affect my choice in returning to give more business to Mama Bessie. PS. This is the best botanica that I have been too between Charlotte and Columbia, SC. There are stores in the area that sell good products, but this is the authentic place. I know that I can get some of everything here from cards to incense and candles. I also love the selection of spiritual colognes, oils, and soaps. You can't beat this place. read more

Searching for a few specific books led me to Mama Bessie's. If I were gathering items for a ritual, I'd be in business. Unfortunately, I found the literary and audio sections severely lacking. I was disappointed in the ambiance when I walked in - The walls were bare, lots of fluorescent lighting and it seemed antiseptic. There was a pleasant -enough man that got up from his computer and came and sat at the register, but I felt I'd intruded on something he was working on, so I hurried around to corral my purchases. I was very interested in meeting Mama Bessie, but heard her in the back with a client and she never showed. There is a vast selection of ritual items, stones, incense, oils, candles, soaps and statues. Would I go there again for something specific? Absolutely. It's for workers, or people looking to get into it. It's a botanica. Yemaya sits in the window. :) They expanded! More stuff! Their prices are really good. I guess it's been about five years since I've started going here. They've got crystals, herbs, figure candles, baths, all that. They do sell decks and books and audio. I think most of their audio is geared towards the Orishas. So, if you're in need of that, they've got you. They're planning on having classes, so I'm looking forward to that. I absolutely love this place. It's not another generic metaphysical store. This is the real deal. I never walk out without finding exactly what I need. And everyone that works there is super helpful. I had a "mini reading" from one of the women who work there in regards to a very troubling situation, I felt so much better when she was done. I despise physical contact with people, but I just had to hug this woman. My bookshelves are filled with books I've gotten from there, and my home always smells of either herbs or incense I've purchased from there. This shop is for the workers and the DIY-ers. I love it and I'd probably be in a bind without it (Haha get it? Bind! ). As the previous reviewer stated, it is more "sterile" compared to other esoteric shops you might go into. For my case, that's exactly what I need. I come here with my set energies and buy supplies either for myself or on my client's behalf when I do spellwork. My head doesn't get clogged... TBH my spirits are lifted when I'm here! While I enjoy The Bag Lady, the energy there is too overwhelming and doesn't cater to my specific needs. It's too gift-shoppy. Plus, Mama Bessie's its a botanica! It's exactly what I need. Prices are great. There's a nice selection of minerals, incense, herbs, and lots of goods for those who work with ATR/ADR. They even have goods for your Orishas here.
