It's a weekly basket of local, seasonal, sustainable produce You prepay for the season and each week you pick up a big box full of a variety of goods. Sometimes you get nuts and fruits thrown into the mostly veggie mix. I split my pickup with two other friends as I am single and mostly cook for myself I could never finish one box in a timely fashion. I'm enjoying the Spring Basket which is 10 weeks of various salad greens, garlic, green onion, fresh herbs, radishes, carrots, garlic and so much more. Summer is 14 weeks of bountiful produce (just take a look at their website to see all that's included!) with beautiful Fallon melons and the occasional basket of raspberries or strawberries that made me alarmed at how delicious the fruit can be. (I literally said "omg, these strawberries have so much strawberry flavor!!" because I had become used to those huge but bland or tart berries from the grocery store). I chose to participate in this instead of going to the weekly farmers markets because this way I'm forced to try new things I might not pick out on my own. It's been fun to try new veggies and get these beautiful mostly organic heirloom varieties as well. Each week they send out a newsletter keeping you updated as to what's being harvested and what to expect in the coming week so you can menu plan. They also include recipe suggestions each week. At the end of the season they hold a potluck "Day at the Farm" at Lattin Farms which was neat to meet others and go on Hay rides and corn mazes. The organizers and participating Farmers are gracious and good at taking feedback. I'm surprised at the variety of things that are grown in northern Nevada (or nearby) although there was quite an abundance of zucchini, tomatoes, and melons every week. Overall it's a great program and I'll likely continue to participate as long as they offer it. They are expanding their pickup points and times and also offer a flower basket too.

As mentioned in the earlier review, you pay in advance for the summer and receive a "basket" every week for 14 weeks of fresh produce from local farmers. We share both baskets with my parents as it's too much for one couple to eat. POSITIVES: You get REALLY fresh fruit and produce every week. We eat more fruits and vegetables than ever before and it forces me to try new recipes. Instead of buying the same thing every week I am getting creative and having a BLAST doing it. The fruits and vegetables really are some of the best I've ever tried. You also get a variety of fresh herbs. This last week we got Sun Jewel Melon which I've never even heard of! Not to mention, it feels good knowing that you are supporting local farmers! NEGATIVES: It's pricier than if you were to go to the local farmers market and buy the same amount of produce. We pay $32.15/week for vegetables and $20/week for fruits. For $52/week we could go crazy at the Saturday farmers market and be buying from a lot of the same growers! Also, because we can't pick up the items until after work (5:30ish) they've been in the heat/sun for a few hours and unfortunately require a lot of TLC to be able to save them for a few days. We are forced to eat a lot of it in the first couple of days (as they are ripe NOW) and then end up buying produce at the store to last the rest of the week anyways. Overall, I am really enjoying my purchase. I'm not sure I could afford to sign up again next year, but since I'm prepaid for 14 weeks I am going to definitely enjoy the fresh produce and exciting variety I receive each week. Close to the Truckee River, tucked in a little pocket of Reno by Mayberry Park, we couldn't have asked for a spot that felt as private and serene. We wanted our day to feel like a slightly fancy-outdoorsy family reunion and knew this spot would be perfect when we visited it in the spring. By the fall, the greenery around the venue had filled in, making the area (and all our photos) extra beautiful. The available space can be set up in many different layouts. The ceremony area easily fit our guest list of 40, with room to spare. Then, it doubled as an area for games and later a bit of casual dancing by just moving a few chairs. We loved having a few different but connected areas for guests to spend time together. The owners were so helpful explaining everything about the venue. We've bought the Summer, Winter and the (new) Spring veggie shares, plus the fruit and bread. The weekly box really inspires us to eat more, and varied produce. Great for our health, and really fun to try new veggies! Every week there is a lettuce and herb, and then the rest of the box is stuffed full of a myriad of seasonal choices. A photo and description of the box items is posted on Facebook each week, and an email shares information about the crops, plus recipes. The farm itself is charming, with a stream and covered bridge. I love supporting the young family who runs this wonderful addition to our community. There are also weekly roadside Farm Stands which feature veggies from the farm. So worth the short lovely drive through Meadow Vista to the Foothill Roots Farm!

They have a small playground and a covered area where a "mud kitchen" will keep your kids entertained for quite a while. The cafe runs out of food pretty early, so order up fast. Everyone here seems to wrap up by lunchtime (when it gets warm/hot). Parking can be very restricted in the adjacent lot - you may need to park near the soccer fields and walk a bit. There's a lot to see from chickens, a variety of flowers and fields of them with different vegetables and fruits like tomatoes and cucumbers, etc. since it was a work outing and we were all walking together, there wasn't much time to stop and check everything out. So I will probably be back before summer ends. They also had a a couple of greenhouses and I heard from a colleague that they have a little farmer's market on certain days. If you like being out in nature, seeing animals and smelling the flowers, check this place out. It's a free entry to the farm and I think they used to have more animals. I only saw the chickens.

After choosing some lettuce, beets and salad turnips I asked the nice young lady if she had a smaller Napa cabbage. She says "just a minute" walks into the field, and cuts a smaller one!! A wonderful place.... It sounds crazy but I've never seen a head of lettuce right out of the field.... It's beautiful and the taste is incredible! So for $15 we got a watermelon, a galia melon, a bunch of basil, 4 bell peppers, several zucchini, 2 huge cucumbers, 2 Japanese eggplants, 4 PINTS of tomatoes in 3 different varieties, 2 sandwich bags full of 2 different varieties of hot peppers, a butternut squash, a huge spaghetti squash, and a pattypan squash. They haven't used any chemicals for four years (so basically organic without the certification) and they use drinking quality well water on all the produce. I got my first box last week and it was huge, definitely the best value I've seen. Plus they don't use any pesticides or fertilizer, which is higher standard than organic. The Saturday I dropped by, they were selling produce, frozen fish, flowers, plants, nuts, baked goods, breads, kettle corn, artisan soap, honey, and jewelry. Some of the vendors were... Thao Ranch of Galt, CA: This small family run farm sells fresh produce. Some of the offerings were fresh dill, sweet snap peas, carrots, red onions, squash, leeks, beets, chard... some other items I can not remember off hand. The produce looked all so beautiful and were vibrantly colored. The carrots, beets, and onions still had their green tops on. Fresh. Plus they sold flowers. Beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers $12-15. Huge full gorgeous bouquets. Professional looking. Grateful Bread of Fair Oaks, CA: I was ecstatic to see their booth. I use to live near the bakery (an actual bakery where they made the goods right in the shop). I would drive or bike on over, my faves were the muesli bread and olive n feta cheese loaf. They have some of the best bread I have ever eaten... mmm. They were selling baguette (sourdough and French), cinnamon raisin bread, jalapeño n cheese bread, muesli bread, slider rolls, dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, banana nut loaf, burger buns, ciabatta rolls, cookies (chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin) and a bunch more. These are all fresh made and not chuck full of preservatives like store shelf bread. I bought a bag of a dozen slider buns $5. Chick's Kettle Corn: Good stuff. Fresh made kettle corn straight from the kettle. He makes it earlier in the day and bags it. I bought a small bag $6. Nature's Nuts: The owner sources the nuts from Ripon and Modesto farms. I spoke to him for a bit. He is quite engaging and quite knowledgeable about nuts (nutritional value, storage, flavoring). No BSing.He sold walnuts, almonds, and pistachios in the shell sold unflavored or flavored. I bought a bag of 8 oz honey smoked almonds. Yum! I was able to sample. The walnuts were so fresh and had an excellent sweet earthy taste. Pat's Pastries: Home based business selling baked goods. Irish soda bread, whole grain bread, chive n cheese biscuits, zucchini pineapple bread, pumpkin ginger bread, gluten free pound cake and zucchini bread... were just some of her offerings. Malik Brothers: They sell various flavors of papadum, chips, rotis, and naan. Each come in a variety of flavors. Roti is a flatbread, made from stoneground whole wheat, originating from India.
