I went for brunch and ordered the A Helluva Mess. It has eggs and hash brown and bacon smothered in sausage gravy. It was delicious! So filling and the gravy was so flavorful. It comes with toast but I subbed it for a buttermilk biscuit. The coffee was also pretty good. The Mama's location on Westheimer in Houston was a favorite 42 years ago. I was so happy to see Mama's during my trip to San Antonio. It was as good as I remembered it. They still have liver and onions on the menu. Who does that any more? I had the Ranch Hand Breakfast because lunch wasn't gonna happen. As heavy as its description in the menu makes it sound. We've been here twice now and both times were a great experience. I think the first time we went I had their special at the time which was a red velvet latte, and then I ordered the migas haufbrau. Chefs kiss for both. The second time I had the toasted bees knees cocktail, and an espresso martini. Both were very good. The espresso martini is strongggg, but I know people like it that way. I had the avocado toast the second time and it was good, but it does come with a salsa on it. I would have preferred it to be more avocado forward, but that's just me! I'm sure some people love it that way. :) Service was 10/10 both times. They have a big outdoor area as well, and we saw people out there with their dogs. read more

The food was delicious, like very good, it made me so happy! I got the blueberry pancakes breakfast and it was so yummy and hit the spot! In fact the flavor was unreal. Something I had never experienced. It truly shocked my nervous system and sent shivers down my spine, the texture, the crispness was more intense than my body could handle. My throat started burning and closing up abruptly, my eye watered and stomach aching. I pleaded with my tongue to stop, panicking I thought, how could something achieve such a delicious taste? I tried to scream but could speak. All I could do is continue shoveling more food down. The hashbrowns were inconceivable, and starting to liquefy my internal organs. I knew this was it. My final stand. I had to decide whether to finish my food and certainly perish or admit defeat. Life and death hinged on every bite and I could feel in the distance.. mama, laughing maniacally. she knew, of my delight and suffering. As my fork dropped and my plate finished, I knew my fate was sealed. I went here today as a birthday eve self-treat. My last visit was in the 2000s, I believe. It has a great menu. It's definitely more varied than I remember it being. I'm going to start by saying I've been going to Mama's for decades. I used to love it. It hasn't been the same since new ownership. It was never "cheap" but you definitely got your money's worth. The food quality and quantity has gone way down. Save yourself some money and go anywhere else but here. The waitress was unprofessional and disrespectful. We went on a Tuesday afternoon and it was loud and overcrowded. Mama's has always been busy but I don't know if they changed the acoustics or what, it was obnoxiously loud. Sat at the bar for dinner and drinks recently. We enjoyed talking with Skyler, who took great care of us. We love how all of the staff work together as a team and are always smiling and friendly. I have split feelings about this place. I've been meaning to try it for a while and that day was a good day to try something new. I'm taking a few things into consideration for my review. First, the ambiance was cool and what was expected. Kind of divey but kind of homey. No surprises. Service was impeccable in that my online order was ready a little after expected but for fresh & hot food, this is something I'm never going to complain about. I ordered the Oxtails pasta, an order of fried mushrooms & fried green tomatoes. My packaging felt warm but not necessarily hot as expected since it wasn't ready when I got there. But I just figured it may have been well packaged. I head home. My travel time home isn't very long even though I was hitting rush hour. It was a cool crisp day but not inside my car; the heat was on full blast. I'm thinking with the little traffic hold up, that would help also. It didn't. Everything was barely luke warm. I tasted everything before putting the pasta in the microwave and the apps in the air fryer. The pasta had a good taste but I'd rather have whole pieces than the way they prepared it. It had quite a few fine bones in it. The fried green tomatoes were pretty good and so were the mushrooms. They just got mushy because they couldn't breathe. Overall, for dinner, I thought everything was just ok. I think I'll come back and review after I try the breakfast. I'm thinking I'd prefer it. read more

Service was amazing we got seated fairly quickly and got our drinks and food ordered in a early matter. Ganna start with the pancakes and eggs were delicious!!!!! Every single restaurant serves eggs but these tasted very good I very much enjoyed them. And the bacon perfectly crispy and an amazing taste. Chilaquiles was spicy, tasty and hot ! Homemade corn tortillas and some cheese with and handful of chicken and 2 eggs on top was perfect. The salsa does have a wonderful taste but it's spicy . So just fyi it's does leave a lasting impression. I can't tell you much about the helluva mess plate. But my sister ate the whole plate and licked it clean. Everyone seemed to have a good time enjoying their food and drinks. I had a fresh cranberry lemonade and liver with onions and green beans. My husband had the "Helluva Mess" plate... wonderful! It comes all piled up in one bowl with stacked hash browns, bacon or sausage, eggs as you like them, all on Texas toast smothered with cream gravy... wow... it was rich, filling and delicious. It was crowded when we got there and was told there would be a 45 minute wait for only the two of us... just ask to sit at the bar (which has plenty of high top tables)... we were seated immediately. A couple of days ago my wife and I decided on a late lunch, around 3 PM. I chose the chopped steak with a loaded baked potato. It came with green beans (my least favorite) so I asked our server, Destiny, if I could substitute and she said of course. So I chose mixed vegetables. A few minutes later she came back and said the baked potato would take an extra 10-12 minutes. I said that's fine. A bit later a man came to our table and said the baked potato would actually take about 20-25 minutes. I was getting frustrated and hungry and said no and changed my order to potato roast with loaded mashed potatoes. When the order came out the green beans hadn't made the change. I was already irritated because of the sign on the door not allowing concealed handguns even with a license and mentally making a note not to return for that reason. The potroast was absolutely delicious with great seasoning. The loaded mashed potatoes were perfect. The green beans were well seasoned and I was glad they didn't make the cut. As I was paying the bill Destiny brought a Togo Bag with two loaded baked potatoes at no charge. On my way out I told Destiny that she saved a bad review on Yelp. She's an excellent server and ambassador for the restaurant. My only concern is why they discourage good people with licensed weapons when it doesn't apply to bad guys. read more

This place is in my top ten for chicken fried steak in San Antonio. It is literally fork tender, and this is no cliché. I did not need a knife to cut it. It's not a frozen, pre-prepared CFS either. I ordered the large size and it was puh-lenty of food. It could have used a bit more mashed taters, but it's not that big of a deal. The grilled southwest chicken salad was also really good. There was plenty of chicken, and they didn't skimp on that green gold (avocado). Also, the fresh raw jalapeno slices added a great kick to the salad. I would get this again. The service is good and so is the food, but it's a little on the high price for casual afternoon dining. This place is also very loud and popular with little screaming kids. I'd go back - just be prepared for a little higher cost and a loud environment. read more

I had a birthday lunch here with some family. This was my first time at Mamas and I was pleasantly surprised. The service was very fast and our waiter did a great job. The food came out quick in spite of the lunch rush. I had the Chicken Fried Steak with Collard Greens and Mac N Cheese. Other folks had a BLT, Grilled Pork Chops, Meat Loaf and the Fish and Chips. Everything looked good and all the people with me enjoyed their meals. The only issue I had was with the fish and chips. There was a lot of chips but only one small piece of fish. One other small negative was that it was very loud in the restaurant. That gave me a headache and it was somewhat difficult to hold a conversation. Came in for a start of my Memorial Weekend. aweful experience. Overwhelmed bar staff complaining as soon the relief came about how overwhelmed she is. I asked for fries while I waited for my husbands dinner. I was given Very cold fries. So I asked when my sandwich came if the fries were warm. She said no you just got your fries. Went for lunch recently and had a good experience. My CFS was very good - the batter tasted delicious AND stayed on the steak! The cheese sauce on the broccoli was probably some of the best I've ever had - had a little spice to it. Unfortunately, our service was pretty slow. From start to finish, we were there for an hour. Slow to greet us, slow to take our order, and VERY slow to bring our food out. This in not OK for a work day lunch. Will definitely be back, but will allow for the long meal time. read more

23 Oct 2023 I didn't know that Cappy's now owned Mama's. That's how long I've been away. After my reading stint this Morning with Owl Radio, I was hungry and saw that hey had opened at 8am. Must have breakfast! In fact, breakfast is served until 3pm! I ordered the Papa breakfast (chicken fried steak, two eggs, hash browns and pancakes). I asked for toast instead of the pancakes and they graciously gave me 3 slices of toast in exchange. The hash browns are hidden under the steak and eggs. I thought I'd been gipped. Ha, ha. The steak was freakin' tender and delicious! And this is when I found out about the Cappy's ownership. The server said they had switched to Wagyu beef. I said something like 'how upscale'. She said Cappy's owned them. OK, I get it now. She further stated the dinner menu has been revamped and pared down. They offer some upscale-sounding food. I will return with the husband. The place for comfort food. We both love liver and onions and it's often dicey if we want to try that at just any restaurant because you need to get it right. Mama's gets it right. The liver was covered in sautéed and fried onions with mashed potatoes and gravy (We requested on the side) It was done perfect, not shoe leather tough. It may seem like a simple thing but to me, if a restaurant can do fried liver well, the other items on the menu will be just as good as well. L&O lovers unite! read more
