S12. General Tso's Chicken --Very Good!
    DON C.

Solid Chinese takeout and carry out food in the downtown Silver Spring area! Did takeout from this restaurant the other for a late lunch and glad I did. The food was prepared fresh and delicious. I ordered a General Tso's Lunch Special and a Sweet n' Sour Soup. All were prepared perfect and tasted excellent. Food was ordered and ready right on time; roughly 10 minutes from the time I walked in and placed the order. Not sure with what the food would look like as this was my first time coming here, I was in for a pleasant surprise. The General Tso's Chicken was still piping hot even after driving back home for about 15 minutes. And, most of all not soggy or mushy!.... something I can't stand when ordering takeout!! The plate and servings were hefty and quite generous. The chicken was a mixed between white and dark meat. It was seasoned just right and so crispy, even after sitting in the container for my drive back home. The General Tso sauce was very tasty as well. My only gripe is that the dish comes with fried rice and I am not sure with what's up with most of the carryouts around the DMV, but a lot of them served this yellow - orangish fried rice that is not the most appealing to me, but I must honestly admit....it was dang good. Lol. I prefer a more wok-charred, brown fried rice over the neon fried rice served here and other places around the DMV. The Hot n' Sour soup gets a thumbs-up and good marks from my end. It was tangy, spicy, and sweet all roll into one. A delicious bowl of tofu, mushrooms, tamarind, and spices that aim to please. In all, Mandarin Restaurant is a solid option when in the Downtown Silver Spring Area and you are looking for something good to eat. The owner was very pleasant and he greeted me as soon as I walked in the door. His wife was very friendly as well and made sure I had all the proper fixings I needed to complete my dish; including my request for extra soy sauce and hot chili oil which complimented and elevated both dishes very well. If it wasn't for the neon orange looking fried rice, I probably would've given this place five stars as a first impression. Also, they could've served more broccoli in the dish than the two pieces that I received Lol -- see pic as receipts. The restaurant itself has limited seating but it appeared to be a popular takeout service with most that came in and patroned the place. A decent winner in my book and will definitely be back to try out other dishes.

Placed a to go pickup order for general tso chicken for my niece and pad thai for myself. Unfortunately we were both disappointed in our meals. I only took a photo of my shrimp pad thai, didn't get one of her chicken. The pad thai looks nothing like any pas thai I've ever had, the sauce, flavor and color was all wrong, and they definitely didn't use rice noodles...they were very soggy. I decided to try this place hoping it would be better than my regular takeout place, but it wasn't, and I definitely wouldn't order from here again.

Food was ok. The shrimp toast were ok, and felt like they were cooked in old oil. I didn't care for the sauce on the general tso's wings. I did like the chicken and garlic sauce - good flavor and large potion. The lo mein had an odd flavor but the noodles were cooked well.

After getting late night cravings for a meal, I decided to sneak too Mandarin to see how they measured up on Mambo sauce wings and fries. When I arrived at the restaurant I was able to get easy parking off Georgia Ave and walk to the front. Upon walking inside i noticed that this place is only takeout due to COVID-19 and it looked decently clean. The owner was very nice and took my order. They had my food ready within 15 minutes and it was decent for a carryout. The chicken was nice and crispy along with he fries and the Mambo sauce was bland. I prefer Capital City sweet hot Mambo sauce over my this version. Overall, the food was hot and crispy and worth the value. I wouldn't go for the Mambo sauce if thats what your looking for, but all in all it was okay.

    S7. Salt and Pepper Shrimp

Overall experience(food, service and ambiance) was great. Just moved to Silver Spring, so this will be my go-to that's walking distance from home. Pictured is Salt and Pepper Shrimp (I added the hot sauce) Comes with white rice *Thank you very much for the water!*

No frills, typical Asian fast food place. No dining in. I ordered the large portion of chicken in garlic sauce. Staff was nice. Nothing horrible about the meal. Chicken was soft. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. I'd come back, but wouldn't go out of my way.

    2 free cokes!

Ordered from the Mandarin Restaurant through Postmates and was satisfied with my order of two spring rolls, one small order of lo mein, one small order of chicken fried rice, and one small order of beef broccoli. It was made and delivered quickly but will say that it could've had more taste. They give you plenty of sauce which is good for this. Next time I'll probably order the wings. They included two free cokes a nice touch you can't complain about and will remember!!

Literally the worse Chinese food I've ever tasted. Truly truly disgusting. The noodles were soggy, the hunan shrimp was inedible, how do you mess up crab Rangoon and egg rolls?? Please please don't order.

    Tatiana G.

My first time ordering from here and very glad I did! I've been in this area for a year and a half and surprised I haven't ordered from here before. Compared to other Chinese places around the food was great. Crab Rangoon was fried perfectly in thin pastry and not thick or chewy. Theboneless ribs had a hint of citrus taste which was delicious with the tender meat. For a quick takeout order on a Saturday night, this was a great choice.

It wasn't well made. There were a surprising number of vegetables, not much meat. But the vegetables were the only thing edible

We ate family style and ordered the scallion…read morepancakes, the spicy sesame paste tofu, the spicy oil wonton pork, the chive and pork dumplings and the sesame balls (filled with red bean paste). Total (not including tip) came out to approximately $49. What's Hot - Menu. Excellent. It's also written in Chinese in addition to English. For those of us familiar with traditional ethnic Chinese food, a menu written in Chinese is a good sign. They have traditional Taiwanese and Chinese food like scallion pancakes, sesame balls, beef noodle soup, soup dumplings, etc... Very good variety and there appears to be something for everyone, possibly with the exception of vegan dishes.. - Quality. Pretty good. Their scallion pancake was soft, not too oily, and not too salty. I prefer the scallion pancake to have been a bit more thick and flaky, but that's my personal preference. To be fair, still delicious. Their chive and pork dumplings definitely had a delicious chive flavor. Substantial and the wrapper was not too thick. Their spicy sesame paste tofu had a good flavor and substantive. The chili oil wontons were not too spicy and had a good flavor. Again, my personal preference would have been for the dumplings to have been more substantive, but still pretty decent. - Service. Pretty good. It appears most, if not all their staffers, speak Chinese (Mandarin), which was also helpful, because I specifically ordered in Chinese. I asked them about the spice level, because I wanted to ensure it would not be too spicy for my friend. - Price. Pretty good value for menu and portions. - Location. It's pretty easy to find. Also within convenient walking distance to the Silver Spring metro. The inside space is pretty good. Tables can seat a minimum of 2, all the way up to 8. What's Not - Quality. The sesame balls are smaller than I expected. They're the rough approximation of a ping pong ball, maybe smaller. I was disappointed, because I like sesame balls that are substantial. - Service. I specifically asked for soup spoons, because we were eating dumplings. Instead, they gave me regular spoons. Not all the dishes come out in the order you hope. For example, main dishes may come out before the appetizers. This is going to be dependent on your personal preference. - Parking. There is parking near the restaurant, but it's going to be dependent on the day and time. Final Answer Worth coming back.

None of us were from this area, and we intended to go to the Mayflower Chinese Restaurant, based on Yelp reviews. However, once we walked in the door, it was apparent this place was focused on carryout, and there was no way we were staying to eat in their dingy entrance area. We walked next door to the Meleket Ethiopian restaurant. However, the place was deserted, and we didn't stay there either. We tried the Lime & Cilantro, the next place down, but it was packed and couldn't handle our group. So, we skipped past the verernary clinic and went to Spring Garden. And, what a great choice that was. They offer a huge menu of Chinese, Thai, and Japanese meals. Everything is reasonably priced. Once we got our food, we were impressed with the quality and portion sizes. And, through it all, the service was prompt and friendly. I ordered Hot and Sour soup (my bellwether for Chinese restaurants) and beef chow fun. The soup was flavorful without being overpowering, and the chow fun was delicious too. I liked everything so much that I ordered another soup and Thai Basil with Chicken to go, and that's been my lunch for the past couple of days. Don't be put off by the seediness of its location. Spring Garden is a great place to grab some tasty, reasonably priced food, either to eat in or take away.
