We went for any early Mothers Day dinner with a big family group. My sister-in-law law urged me to get a cocktail. I ordered the Scorpion. But it didn't taste good and I asked for a strawberry daiquiri instead. We decided to get the Mandarin Family dinner which was $29 per person. There was SO much food that I couldn't catch it all in photos. We had broccoli beef, orange chicken(which was too spicy and too hard), sweet & sour pork, hot & sour soup, fried rice and white rice, garlic shrimp(which I totally missed), and several other dishes. A Diamond Bar institution for Americanized Chinese food, the clientele when we went was almost exclusively old and white, not that there is anything wrong with that. Just keep in mind for the SGV, this is old-fashioned American Chinese food and not the type of authentic cooking you usually get in this Chinatown mecca. Located in a large sprawling strip mall, there is plenty of parking. The restaurant has kind of cheesy decor, and I was a little disgusted when we were seated at a table and my forearm stuck to the table. There was some kind of gooey sauce stuck all over the table where I was sitting, because it hadn't been properly cleaned. Service was fast, attentive, and generally friendly. I say generally, because I did ask if the restaurant could do s simple request and was flatly told no. They have one dish that is shrimp and scallops in a faux bird's nest made of fried crispy noodles. I've had kung pao chicken served in these types of noodle nests in NYC, and it's great cause you can eat the noodles now covered in the sauce at the end of the meal. They said nothing else could be put in the noodle nest. Um, why? I'd have paid an extra couple of dollars if that was the issue, but I wasn't even offered the option. Just a flat no that they would not be willing to put anything else in the nest. You'd think I was asking for ketchup at a Michelin three star French restaurant. If you look at the pictures, or their menu, they also like to make like they are a great place to get tiki drinks. I ordered a Long Island Iced Tea, which is one of their signatures. Not only did I hear nothing shaken or mixed behind me, despite their having a full bar. It came out way too quickly to have been made from scratch. It most likely came from a large pre-made bottle you'd get at a supermarket. It was awful and had almost zero alcohol. A waste of money. It also was served in a lackluster old soda glass, unlike their menu photos that show fancy decorated girl drinks with umbrellas in fancy glasses. But, let's move on to the medium to good. The food. The wonton soup for two was enough for two people to get a small cup each. Despite the menu showing you could purchase crispy noodles - a staple at Americanized Chinese restaurants - we were told they no longer carry crispy noodles. This cannot be a supply chain issue. The fried dumplings were okay, but the dumplings themselves were remarkably small and the ginger dipping sauce was awful. One of the weirdest sauces I've ever been given for dumplings. Stick with the white vinegar, soy sauce, and ginger. The crispy shrimp is a fried sweet shrimp that was good but not great. There were an okay amount of shrimp, but the flavor is little like sweet ketchup. The other main dish we ordered was the chicken in garlic sauce. This was the best dish and the most infuriating. The sauce is one of the best garlic sauces I've ever had in all of Los Angeles. It reminded me of the sauce any place can make in New York City but no one seems to make correctly in Los Angeles. However, the plate was mainly vegetables and there was not enough chicken in it for even one person. It was beyond skimpy and a rip-off. We finished the food and realized we were not even close to full. So, I ordered the kung pao chicken with white meat. Thank God this one had few veggies and a good amount of chicken. However, still not enough to fill three people, so we ordered a second order of the dumplings, though they take 20 minutes to make. Then we got the bill. An amount of dishes that might run sixty bucks at a regular SGV Chinese restaurant or NYC Americanized Chinese joint ran us over $100. I have never paid so much to feel so unsatisfied. If I wanted to go back to have the garlic chicken, I'd have to order like 3 orders and spend sixty bucks to be full. Everything was soooo overpriced. You'd think you were in Beverly Hills and once again at a Michelin starred restaurant. They need to drop their prices or seriously increase the portions. This place is a big rip-off for the cash. I still wanted to give the review 3 stars because the soup and garlic sauce were very good. However, I had to go back to 2 stars due to price, their unwillingness to do an incredibly simple request with the noodle nest, and ultimately how sick I got by the time I drove home. The search for good Americanized Chinese food continues. Sesame Inn in Newbury Park/Thousand Oaks is still the best there is right now, but they still aren't doing dine-in and I live too far away to get take-out. I doubt I'd be back here anytime soon, and I cannot recommend for the reasons listed above. Pass. read more

Until we brought friends and a Cockroach fell from the ceiling onto the hair of our guest!! when the server was called, he brushed it off and said "No harm" All they could say is they would tell owner. Also their hours say closed for 3-5 but they won't serve you if your not there by 2:15 they say come back at 5pm Because of their lack of customer service and Nonchalant attitude concerning Cockroaches that fall from the ceiling, I don't recommend anyone eating at this place! To manage expectations: I have eaten Authentic Chinese in Hong Kong and China. This is not that kind of menu. The menu here is distinctly 1970s Chinese-American menu, where you have to ask for chopsticks. But food was fresh and done very well and priced well also. We had visitors from out of town (Caucasian from the mid-west) and needed a nicer restaurant that can accommodate a large group to host a dinner. Not a lot of options in this area. This turned out to be a great choice. Location: In a mini mall with plenty of parking Decor: Very traditional Chinese rosewood style furniture. Several large banquet tables. Menu: moo shu pork, sizzling rice soup, sizzling beef on hot plate, bird nest seafood, sweet and sour pork. Not authentic Chinese menu, but all prepared well, fresh ingredients with distinct and tasty sauces. Everyone enjoyed the food. Service: Staff was attentive. Speak Chinese and English. My hubby, family and I have frequented Mandarin Taste on a regular basis the last 12 to 15 years when we lived in the area. Since moving, we unfortunately haven't had the opportunity to return until today- 1/8/22. We were pleasantly surprised to see the same staff from the past greet us as if we were family. Our party of 6 was quickly seated and we were provided their complimentary jasmine tea- which was perfect for this cold evening. We ordered the following: wonton soup, Mongolian beef, fish with blackbean sauce, 3 meat lo- mein, chicken with snap Peas. We came in because our kitchen was under construction and since moving to Diamond Bar a few people have told us we HAVE TO TRY IT! So we came in sat, the 1st server that came to us was very short and bit rude, almost like he was in a rush and because we had a question we were just slowing him down. We also watched him make a cocktail at the bar and use his bare hand to push the ice in the cup. The same hand he brought out plates and used to write down orders. There was also a language barrier and were trying to ask for 2 different soups. I wanted the sizzling rice and my husband the wonton. We were asking specifically for only chicken in the sizzling rice and bring the wonton as it made. We only recieved the sizzling rice. I think because he didn't understand our questions and wasn't trying to either. Another server Young came to us and brought out the rest of our order. He was a bit more pleasant and friendly. Not sure I'd come back. The atmosphere is nothing special. The food was what you would expect for Chinese food. Food was ready quickly. The main dish was pretty good. Cons: they charge for steamed rice. No chopsticks other utensils or napkins included with my order. (I didn't realize until I got home). The rice was hard & clumpy. It would've been great if used to make fried rice, but not as regular steamed rice. It tasted like day old rice. read more

My large Filipino family had lunch here for the first time on a Sunday. The location is in kind of a random plaza with a few Indian eateries that the family decided was next to try. Being from walnut originally I surprisingly had never stepped foot or heard of this plaza. My grandma was the one who suggested Mandarin taste as she comes often. We had two large tables in the back which could hold up to 12 people each. I believe there is group orders you can place but our family had picked out eight dishes for each table. Our waiter was hilarious and kept commenting on how girl heavy our family is (I mean he's not wrong lol) Food wise we started off with the appetizer of a dumpling soup which was basically a meal in itself. Then we got veggie egg rolls, kung pao chicken, beef and broccoli(which was sizzling!), honey walnut shrimp, crispy pan fried noodles, pork chops, crispy salmon, and orange chicken. Each table had hot green tea which I loved. I would say my favorite out of everything was the honey walnut shrimp and the pork chops. Everything was fantastic and the portions are large so we had lots to take home. Couldn't forget the fortune cookie at the end as well! We loved that Mandarin taste was able accommodate our large family which is hard to do at restaurants. The service was excellent and we're already planning to come back for Mother's Day! read more

For the second year in a row, we decided to celebrate my two oldest adult children's birthdays here. For the second year in a row, Mandarin Taste hit it out of the park! For years, we have been going to a restaurant in Rowland Heights for our Chinese fix, unfortunately that restaurant closed in the one that replaced. It was not good to put it mildly. So last year when we were looking for somewhere new to go I remember Mandarin taste from back in the 80s when I used to work in Pomona and eat lunch there all the time-they had great lunch specials, we decided to check it out and see if it was still the great place. I remembered. it wasn't it was better! The food is amazing and the service is superb! We had walnut shrimp, Szechuan beef, salt, and pepper, chicken, Mongolian, beef, chop Suey, shrimp, fried rice, hot and sour soup. Everything was delicious! Our server Young was fantastic. He remembered us from last year, which was nice. He anticipated our every need-- for anything he was right there and he was funny. When we left, he said see you next year. We will definitely be back. This is my 2nd time at Mandarin Taste Restaurant and I truly love it. My brother and I like to celebrate our birthdays here with our family. The service is great and our waiter Yung is always so friendly and funny. The servings are big family style with a nice ambiance. We went on Sunday around noon and it wasn't too busy which was good for us. It seems like families come here a lot. We ordered the hot and sour soup, shrimp fried rice, Chicken Lo Mien, honey walnut shrimp, kung pao shrimp, chicken, and beef combo, Szechuan beef, chop suey, salt and pepper chicken, salt and pepper prawns, Sweet and sour chicken, and Mongolian Beef. My favorite was the honey walnut shrimp, Szechuan beef, and kung pao shrimp, chicken, and beef combo. Everything else was good. I wasn't really a fan of the salt and pepper chicken and prawns. My husband and I came here often during the nineties. It was one of our favorite places to eat but we moved an hour south. We were in the area so we decided to have lunch here for old times sake. The food was excellent back in the nineties so I had very high expectations. They did not disappoint!! The food was delicious and one of our daughters was able to eat at one of her mom and dad's "places" from before she was born. We ordered Kung Pao three flavors, sweet and sour pork, beef lo míen, dry sautéed string beans and dumplings. Everything had good flavor, the dumpling wrappers were just the right thickness with a good amount of meat filling, the beef in the dishes we ordered was so tender and delicious. The service was really great with frequent checks on us and smiling faces. We're so happy we decided to return to our old favorite place. We will definitely be returning since our daughter will be attending CPP. This could've gone a different way since I had such fond memories of the food but they lived up to my memories in the great quality of their food and the great service. We went to Mandarin Taste for my Uncle's 80th Birthday (which is a very big deal for people in South Korea). All 9 of us were comfortably seated around a large table with a lazy susan in the middle of it. Food came out very quickly and it was all very tasty. Standouts from our order: Kung Pao Beef, General Chicken, Salt & Pepper Fish Fillet, & Mongolian Beef. Not too spicy at all and very flavorful. Customer service was excellent. Our water glasses were refilled many times and our waiter attended to us constantly to make sure we were full and happy. The restaurant was very kind by allowing us to store our birthday cake in their refrigerator until we were ready. The waiters were even nice enough to take our group photos with our cameras. Food prices were very reasonable for its quality--you could tell it was very different from fast food, the taste was exceptionally higher. Overall, a 10 out of 10 experience. I really hate to say this as I have been a long time customer and fan of the food and wait staff for many years. Yesterday my wife and I stepped in at 2:25 to have lunch, the time is very important here. I was told I can't be seated and that I should have been there at 2:15 !!! Really ? The posted hours are 11:00 to 3:00 for lunch. He then said I could order take out and eat it in the car ! I couldn't believe that demand nor could the people seated inside watching all this unfold. Not sure if he's the owner but was a real rude ass to us. It was like if you don't like it we don't need your business. I have about two dozen couples who we have shared this location and will now spend the time to tell them what took place with this idiot who goes against their own rules. There was absolutely no reason to not seat us for lunch. The place was empty and one group was in the process of leaving. I actually came back in the to talk logic with him and he was even more animated and angry at me for not following his take order advice. Good food and service or not, we will not be back. Just so you know these people will not read this review or write an apology for the public to see. It's too bad that the cooks and wait staff are punished because of uncaring power hungry people like this. Notice their posted times on the Yelp page. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!! Worst experience ever! We ordered three dishes a few days ago and they gave us two correctly and the third wrong. We had ordered kung pao chicken and got some sort or rice instead . We called the restaurant and they said they would give us a replacement dish at our next visit. The man on the phone was polite, apologetic, and very accommodating. However, the person that helped us today was TERRIBLE. After 45 min of waiting for my food... they would not release it to me because there was a $2.00 difference. I offered to pay the $2.00 and they would NOT TAKE MY MONEY because they could not figure out how to ring up $2.00!!! My wife and sleeping baby waited in the car and i had to go back with out food because this poor excuse of a restaurant could not work their own register or accommodate their customers? I am so annoyed. I can not express my anger and disappointment. Not only were they not accommodating. But they also where rude and questioning wether there was an initial order they messed up. They acted like i was lying. Well, apparently there is a book that management keeps where they record in situations like this. When the girl pulled out this grievance book, my order, phone number, and description of the mistake made on my order was recorded! YET THEY COULD NOT RELEASE MY FOOD FOR $2.00 dollars. I hope people drop this place. It looks dirty in there and the parking lot is completely empty on a Sunday afternoon. One of the best Chinese restaurants in the area for both the American and traditional pallette. I haven't tried, but the staff says there is also a separate Chinese menu with more traditional dishes. Love the Wor Wonton soup, Bok Choy , BBQ pork with mixed veggies and Yang Chow fried rice. Can also recommend the crispy shrimp or chicken, beef broccoli, and the Kung Pao dishes as well as the spicy beef dishes. Service has always been great and the staff is very friendly.
