Mandolin Sushi and Steak house has quickly become my go-to spot! Every time I come here, the food is consistently amazing and fresh. We had the beef fried rice, hot garlic chicken, and some sushi rolls -- everything was bursting with flavor and cooked perfectly. The beef fried rice was hearty and delicious, the hot garlic chicken had just the right kick without being overwhelming, and the sushi was fresh, beautifully made, and full of flavor. You can really tell they care about quality. On top of the great food, the service is always friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is welcoming whether you're here for a casual dinner or a special night!

Salmon Bento box - tempura was crispy and great; so was salmon, asparagus and everything else!

Stopped in on the way to the Seattle airport from the Olympic Peninsula based on all the great Yelp and Google reviews, and we all loved it! Between the 5 of us we split the salmon bento box with salmon teriyaki, California roll, tempura, shrimp & veggies, gyoza, spring roll, rice and salad. Then we tried 4 rolls between the five of us: (1) the Seattle roll with salmon, spicy tuna, avocado, and cucumber ($11); (2) the yellowtail roll with green onion and avocado ($12), (3) Crunchy roll with shrimp, tempura, avocado, cucumber, crab with tempura crunch and sweet sauce ($16), and finally, (4) green river roll w/yellowtail, tuna, and jalapeño inside, topped with avocado, green onion. The sushi was ready quickly and everything was delicious! Generous amount of really fresh fish in the rolls. Will Definitely return on our next trip near here!

Came here on a whim. We didn't sit at the hibachi table, but grabbed a regular seat. I order the hibachi at the regular table and my husband some sushi and sashimi. He said his was very fresh tasted amazing. I enjoyed my hibachi, got double rice instead of veggies. The service was great, our server came to the table multiple times to check in. Definitely recommend trying.

I've always had a great meal here. Staff is very friendly and the food is great. However, last time I went to lunch I was really disappointed. I ordered sashimi bento box and got Nigiri. Which is raw fish on top of rice. The menu said six but I got four. I told the waitress, who was great, and she told the chef. He said knock $5 off, it was never about the money to me. Plus the fish was warm and didn't taste that good. I've been going here for years and recommending it to everyone for evening and lunch. I haven't been back and have, instead, been going to Sapporo's in University Place. It has better prices and the food is really good. Not sure if I will be going back to Mandolin. It might have been an off day for the cook or they are cutting corners. I'm not sure but there are other places to get this type of food. One other thing, the parking at Mandolin is limited and difficult.

Restaurant side of the 'bar' stacked with boxes, staging, cleaning supplies to clean plates, and directly across from diners.

We recently had a large group reservation at Mandolin for a special occasion, and the experience was disappointing. The food was decent but ultimately unremarkable. The vegetables were the highlight, and the filet/steak and chicken dishes were enjoyed by the group. The fried rice was good, though the noodles were cold and lacked flavor. The miso soup was fine, but the salad was watery and poorly dressed. On a positive note, our chef was friendly and managed the group well, and the hibachi show was as entertaining as other similar concept restaurants. For the restaurant itself, the ambiance felt cluttered. For example, in the dining room directly next to the hibachi and service area was a stack of boxes, crumpled bed sheet, and cleaning supplies, giving an unkempt feel to things. The hoods over hibachi grills also weren't keeping up with the smoke, so to prevent burning eyes and clothes permeated with cooking oil smoke several of us opted to escape outside into the cold, rainy weather for fresh air during our table wait. The experience could have scored a 3-stars review and been a perfectly pleasant meal. What soured things to result in a one-star review was how our reservation was handled. When we arrived, we learned that the owner had taken over the back room for a personal holiday party that had been in progress for nearly four hours, and our large group couldn't be seated as planned. The hostess tried her best, but this left us waiting in the cramped front entrance, watching the owner's party do round-after-round of shots (and not even utilizing the hibachi grills). The hostess ultimately was not able to move her boss's party along, so they were forced into Plan B, which was seating us around a table that did not fully accommodate the group. The staff did their best, but the owner's actions really had an unpleasant impact on a special occasion.

Mexican city roll is a must try

Walking in it's really smoky but that is to be expected since it's hibach. I opted to sit in a booth rather than a seat to watch the cooks. Although I didn't sit with the cooks they sounded very friendly and funny it would be great outing for a birthday. The service was very quick and friendly. The sushi I had was the Firecracker Roll and it was a 100/10!!! It was not a small roll of sushi either. It was a lot and very good quality.

Good place to grab a quick bite or go for hibachi dinner/lunch. Service was great and the food came out fairly quickly. It was a bit pricey and the rolls were a bit too big to be able to eat in one bite. Also good luck trying to keep up a convo with the constant birthday/special occasions celebration performance/singing

    Dragon Roll
    Paul M.

Came for lunch and wanted both sushi rolls and Hibachi table side service. Ordered a Dragon roll, it was good but nothing special. I would give it 3 stars. Ordered steak and shrimp and steak and calamari to be cooked table side. The chef had some good skills and it was fun watching our meal prepared for us. It also came with a TON of food. Hibachi was 4 stars and I might come back for that again but I will definitely get my sushi elsewhere. Cleanliness rating was just "OKAY" which is never a good sign to see on a door of a restaurant as you walk in, but looked clean inside to me.

They have been around for over 20…read moreyears (originally as Tokyo Japanese Steak and Sushi house), but not sure if there was change in management or if they just got rid of sushi on their menu and rebranded. The interior is HUGE and can easily fit a couple of hundred people if not more. They have a bar in the front and a small resting area, which needs to be bigger to accommodate the people standing around waiting for a table. Despite the size of the restaurant, they only use a quarter of their restaurant at a time, likely because they lack workers. On a weekday evening at around 7pm, we waited over 40 minutes for a table even though there was plenty of seating to be had. Tokyo serves a variety of different meat and combo options including filet mignon, chicken, scallops, ribeye, shrimp, calamari, etc.. Each combo comes with miso soup, side salad (iceberg lettuce with tomato and shredded carrot with ranch) , and a bowl of white rice with the option to upgrade your rice to fried rice for $6 more. They also have complimentary piña colada sherbet for dessert. For my meal, I chose the CALAMARI + SCALLOP combo. For those who have never had teppanyaki before, it's as much about the show as it is about the meal. It's an interesting setup as you and your party sit with other parties around a large grill- it's social dining. After you get your soup and salad, the teppanyaki chef brings his cart over to the table and lights up the grill with alcohol and oil for a fiery opening. He then starts grilling food and puts the food directly on your plate depending on what people ordered. For the first course, the teppanyaki chef grills mushrooms and onions for all. He then flips eggs and makes fried rice. Afterwards, he starts grilling the meat and then grills another round of veggies (bean sprouts and cabbage) for everyone. There are two dipping sauces: A1 Sauce and A2 Sauce. A1 (soy-based) is used for beef and chicken and A2 (mayonnaise-based) is used for seafood. I personally preferred A1 much more than A2 as it was sweeter and less watery. Then again, both sauces fell flat in my opinion. It would have been better if they had provided teriyaki sauce instead. Unlike the usual CALAMARI rings that you get at most restaurants, they grilled a steak of it and cut it up into small pieces. It was moist but kind of rubbery with little taste. The SCALLOPS were better than the calamari, but I can honestly say they weren't super sweet or flavorful either. I tried a bite of my companion's FILET MIGNON and I regret not getting that instead. It was moist, juicy, and tender. Now I know to order steak when I go to another steak house. Portions are generous and I was stuffed by the end of the meal. With that said, prices are between $20-$30 per person and other than the piña colada sherbet, I can't say that I was impressed by the quality of the food; the food was just bland. Our chef, Sonny, was extremely nice, personable, and attentive, putting on a fantastic show for our party. However, as aforementioned, the general service was on the slower side and I definitely wouldn't wait 40 minutes again for a meal. The atmosphere is dark and the music is loud and so you can't really have a conversation with the people around you. The interior is also worn and dated and in much need of a refresh. Overall: 3/5 for food, 2.5/5 for service, 2.5/5 for atmosphere

The cook dropped a piece of steak on the table on almost every person he served. He was very good with the salt shaker which explains why my Chicken and the vegetables were overly salted. I had to remind my server to bring us water a couple of times.

(FYI, for weekends and holidays, you'll be charged the dinner price all day). Since it was our first time, our server kindly explained how the ordering system works. You place your sushi orders through one phone with a limit of 15 items every 15 minutes. Drinks and refills are recommended to be ordered directly through your server so they don't take up item slots. Even if you order less than 15 items, you still wait the 15 minutes before placing another round. It sounds a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty simple! One of the cutest parts of the experience was having our food delivered by a little robot server with a cat face. Just make sure to grab the food from the section glowing blue so you don't accidentally take another table's order. Super fun and honestly memorable! By the time we were getting full, my family joked that the cat face looked menacing, because we were hoping no more food would be brought to our table lol. The orders don't all arrive at the same time and some can be delayed, so I'd suggest somewhat trying to keep track of your orders if you don't want to go overboard. The sashimi was delicious and the portions are HUGE, so definitely pace yourself because they do charge for leftovers. My son got a little too excited and overordered, so we ended up paying the leftover fee. However, I was genuinely impressed that Sumo Sushi actually allows you to take leftovers home, even with the fee included. I mean, you'll have to pay the fee either way, but I've never been to an AYCE sushi restaurant that allowed leftovers as takeout before. I really respect how serious they are about reducing food waste. They also have a small buffet section you can grab already prepared/cooked food from while waiting for your sushi orders. My absolute favorites were the miso soup, seafood boil(?), and the tempura fish that lives rent free in my head (I should have asked if I could order that fish for takeout!). They also had other hot foods, meats, and seafood options that were tasty. The dessert section was more basic (flan, jello, fortune cookies, etc.), so I skipped dessert this time (besides the fortune cookies hehe). The service, in general, was fantastic. While we were dining, a child nearby celebrated a birthday with their family and the staff went ALL OUT singing happy birthday with light-up decorations and so much energy. It was adorable and way more effort than most restaurants put in. My only small critique is that the "French Fries" listed on the menu are actually sweet potato fries. They tasted good, and I normally like sweet potatoes, but it definitely caught us off guard because it wasn't what we expected. When we left, the staff kindly said goodbye to us, including an older gentleman near the door who consistently seemed focused on customer service and even asked if we wanted condiments packed with our leftovers. We had such a lovely experience and I would consider Sumo Sushi as probably one of the better AYCE sushi spots in the area. We'll definitely be back!

The sushi - when it finally showed up - was good, but the grilled beef was fatty and greasy. The Chicken 'Katsu' was soggy. Some items - despite taking what seemed like forever to arrive - felt and tasted like they'd been sitting under a heat lamp for too long. Horrible experience for $100. We won't be back.
