A restaurant that has hibachi grill as an option! We decided to sit down in their "regular" dine in area. The chicken fried rice was good and portion was great! We had their pearls on the beach sushi roll which was pretty good. The sushi was fresh and I enjoyed the sauce that came with it. The service was okay. The food took some time to make. The server lost my credit card and I was the one that had to bring it up for them to find it so that was disappointing. The ambiance is nice. The non-hibachi area has a nice setting with nice flowers and lighting on the ceiling. However, during busy hours, it can be pretty loud due to the hibachi area. read more

The kids really enjoyed the Hibachi grill here. I usually stay away from these types of places because they can be overpriced and underwhelming. However, my son really wanted to take us on a "date". I'm glad we agreed because the chef was funny and entertaining which kept the kids engaged. The food was priced accordingly for the portion we got. One meal can easily feed 2. My only feedback is that the soy sauce makes the food salty and one note. Great if you love teriyaki. Kids loved it of course. I appreciated the cook on my filet mignon and the chef obliged my request to skip adding the sauce on my salmon. My Mom had Mahi Mahi and I would order that next time. Each grill has 8 seats. Since we were a party of 5 and we came mid afternoon on a Saturday, we didn't have to share the space. I've tried the regular menu a long time ago and I can't recall if it was a good meal. We had the beef fried rice, hot garlic chicken, and some sushi rolls -- everything was bursting with flavor and cooked perfectly. Stopped in on the way to the Seattle airport from the Olympic Peninsula based on all the great Yelp and Google reviews, and we all loved it! Between the 5 of us we split the salmon bento box with salmon teriyaki, California roll, tempura, shrimp & veggies, gyoza, spring roll, rice and salad. Then we tried 4 rolls between the five of us: (1) the Seattle roll with salmon, spicy tuna, avocado, and cucumber ($11); (2) the yellowtail roll with green onion and avocado ($12), (3) Crunchy roll with shrimp, tempura, avocado, cucumber, crab with tempura crunch and sweet sauce ($16), and finally, (4) green river roll w/yellowtail, tuna, and jalapeño inside, topped with avocado, green onion. This place used to be our go-to for Asian fare. However, they recently changed them menu and eliminated about half or more of the food options. We're very disappointed and likely won't return as they don't offer the dishes we like. The place is clean and service was always pretty good. Their choice to change the menu is bewildering, as SO many customers went there for the items they eliminated. I wish them continued success, but we won't be contributing to that. I've always had a great meal here. Staff is very friendly and the food is great. However, last time I went to lunch I was really disappointed. I ordered sashimi bento box and got Nigiri. Which is raw fish on top of rice. The menu said six but I got four. I told the waitress, who was great, and she told the chef. He said knock $5 off, it was never about the money to me. Plus the fish was warm and didn't taste that good. I've been going here for years and recommending it to everyone for evening and lunch. I haven't been back and have, instead, been going to Sapporo's in University Place. It has better prices and the food is really good. Not sure if I will be going back to Mandolin. It might have been an off day for the cook or they are cutting corners. I'm not sure but there are other places to get this type of food. We recently had a large group reservation at Mandolin for a special occasion, and the experience was disappointing. The food was decent but ultimately unremarkable. The vegetables were the highlight, and the filet/steak and chicken dishes were enjoyed by the group. The fried rice was good, though the noodles were cold and lacked flavor. The miso soup was fine, but the salad was watery and poorly dressed. On a positive note, our chef was friendly and managed the group well, and the hibachi show was as entertaining as other similar concept restaurants. For the restaurant itself, the ambiance felt cluttered. For example, in the dining room directly next to the hibachi and service area was a stack of boxes, crumpled bed sheet, and cleaning supplies, giving an unkempt feel to things. The hoods over hibachi grills also weren't keeping up with the smoke, so to prevent burning eyes and clothes permeated with cooking oil smoke several of us opted to escape outside into the cold, rainy weather for fresh air during our table wait. The experience could have scored a 3-stars review and been a perfectly pleasant meal. What soured things to result in a one-star review was how our reservation was handled. When we arrived, we learned that the owner had taken over the back room for a personal holiday party that had been in progress for nearly four hours, and our large group couldn't be seated as planned. The hostess tried her best, but this left us waiting in the cramped front entrance, watching the owner's party do round-after-round of shots (and not even utilizing the hibachi grills). The hostess ultimately was not able to move her boss's party along, so they were forced into Plan B, which was seating us around a table that did not fully accommodate the group. The staff did their best, but the owner's actions really had an unpleasant impact on a special occasion. read more

Ordered steak and shrimp and steak and calamari to be cooked table side. The chef had some good skills and it was fun watching our meal prepared for us. It also came with a TON of food. Hibachi was 4 stars and I might come back for that again but I will definitely get my sushi elsewhere. My daughter decided this was where she wanted to celebrate her birthday and it was a great choice. The atmosphere and service was great, the chef was phenomenal and engaging and the food was delicious. We had 12 of our family members come to celebrate which included toddlers and teenagers and everyone left full and happy. My family and I came in to celebrate an anniversary. Upon arrival, we noticed on the door the inspection rating says "Need to improve". With eyes wide open, we walked into the restaurant. We were greeted promptly and sat at our table. The restaurant was smelly and did not look the cleanest in my honest opinion. The restaurant overall was kind of dark and moody but maybe that's their vibe. We came for hibachi and the show that usually comes along with it. At other hibachi restaurants, we have had very interactive and enthusiastic chefs who take their time cooking, enjoy talking to the guests and also involve the guests in the "tricks" they do. Our chef did not do that here, he pretty much cooked quickly, did a couple of tricks and barely spoke to the guests. Our waiter was good and attentive and brought things to us right away. Food: gyoza, sushi, and hibachi grilled chicken, steak and shrimp. Everything tasted mediocre. The hibachi fried rice was probably the best out of all of the foods we ordered. They only have a few offerings like yakisoba, some bento boxes and fried rice... There is no teriyaki on the menu anymore. Three pages of the menu are taken up with sushi. Which is okay, We love sushi but we come here for a variety. It appears they have shifted their focus to sushi and hibachi. The quality of the food seems to have suffered as well. The grilled chicken doesn't taste like grilled chicken, It tastes like chicken that has been waved over a wok, And it was sliced thin as if it had been done on a meat slicer, not cut up with a knife. Everyone in my party LOVED this place. Joshua was amazing, our waitress was super sweet. I didn't get her name. The food YUM. I think we all tried a different hibachi dinner so we were able to sample quite a bit of food. I was so stuffed when I left and sooooo satisfied. The birthday song, the drums, the drinks... AMAZING. And we weren't rushed. It was such a good time. I cannot rave about this place enough. Even making the reservations was fun because the woman in the phone was so nice. I love an excellent hibachi grill to celebrate special occasions. Since it was my son's 21st birthday, I thought we could share a Kiriko glass of Sake. After reading several reviews, I decided to give this place a try. I did not realize we needed a reservation, but the staff was understanding and accommodating (it helped that it was a Tuesday night). From what I could see l there were only three stations, with two grills on each station that could seat sixteen. There is plenty of tables for dining in. The food was the standard seafood, chicken, and steak grilled with butter and yum-yum sauce found at your typical American Japanese Steakhouse. It was good. They do provide larger helpings than most restaurants. I had leftovers for three days. Overall the food is 3.5 stars, however, the staff attitude and service earned the facility a solid 4. read more

I had the Mongolian steak bento which included a spring roll, pork gyoza, tempura vegetables, soup, salad, orange and a cookie. All very tasty but a little sweet for my taste. Our visit here was interesting to say the least. It was very difficult to come to a decision on how many stars to give this place. This restaurant has the option of hibachi or sushi. We had opted for sushi. There was a younger guy who had taken our drink and sushi order. While we were ordering, the loudest birthday song ever was sung. Our waiter couldn't hear us while we were trying to order, and although he was wearing a mask he got extremely close to our faces. I am not a fanatic with this, but it was a little too close for comfort at this time. He seemed quite confused on some of the requests we had.I could tell.... so I was sure to repeat what we ordered again before he left trying to make sure everything was clear. When the guy returned with our drinks, my husband was bothered because instead of our drinks being held on the side of the glass which seems natural.... the guy had his hand over the top of our glasses and he was holding them where our mouths would be on the cup. Super thankful of straws! We were also given a complimentary miso soup. I usually don't like miso soup at all, but I did enjoy the one here. Shortly after ordering, a girl came back to explain the guy who took our order was in training, and she wanted to confirm our order with us. We corrected a few things with the girl. She explained how there was an up-charge to have the rolls made with soy paper opposed to seaweed which we were fine with. I had also subbed one roll to have tuna instead of salmon. There was no charge mentioned about this change. The girl was very kind and apologetic. I did think it was rather odd for someone clearly not familiar with a Japanese restaurant/menu to be alone. When people are new in a position, they are usually shadowing or have someone with them to assist with questions. This was not the case. About twenty minutes go by when the girl comes back over to our table and asks if our food was to go. We looked at her confused and said no. It seems the trainee put our food to go even though we were sitting down at a table the whole time waiting on it. She apologized again and said they would plate it and have it right out. Our food looked amazing and tasted delicious. My rolls with the soy paper had trouble staying stuck to the plate, and parts of them broke off from the sticking making the rolls difficult to stay together. Throughout our whole visit, we must've heard the obnoxiously loud birthday song sung by the staff to a minimum of three times to different people. Once we received our bill, we realized we were charged $6 extra dollars on my roll where I subbed the tuna. The soy paper was $2 so I am guessing replacing the salmon was $4. This annoyed me a bit since we weren't informed. The point is that there were other rolls that were similar to the price this roll was originally with just as much tuna so I don't understand the difference in price and why it was so much more. There were other things we witnessed while being there, but it's been a month now so everything isn't as fresh in my head. To end the evening, my credit card was returned to another couple sitting close to us. I heard them say, "we already got our card back." I said, "that's mine!" and called out "Ashton.... am I being punked? You can come out now!" The moral of the story is this visit was rather odd. The sushi was very good though. I think trainees should definitely have some assistance while they are getting their footing, and please for the love of God take into account how loud that song was sung for the actual size of the space.
