I didn't realize the there was a hair salon hiding in the north end of the Loop. Mane Space is up in the Garland Building on the 18th floor. It's a small salon but it doesn't feel crowded. I like that the salon seems to Claire a multicultural clientele. I came to see Doni (@hairsmittenbysmith) and she is great. I got a blowout but she's a colorist so she can do that too and just about anything hair related. We talked about extensions... and honestly, I think I may get them. Why not do something new and fun for a bit? My hair is long but I would love to have waist length hair. This nondescript salon is super easy to get to if you use CTA! Just take about any line and hop off at the Washington Street stop. You can park here, since there are garages all over the place and there's street parking I'd you're lucky. Right outside the building on Wabash there's Macy's valet and another valet across the street directly in front of the Garland building. Let me tell you that the salon is an hidden gem in the loop. I am so mad at myself for not finding it earlier. I got a cut and color from Laura. She is awesome. She gave me exactly what I asked her for. I use to go to a great salon on Belmont and Southport from 2009 to 2016 but I moved to the Southloop and had my 1st baby and the location was just super inconvenient for me. Since I have been trying places but was either - no way or I will give them another try and was always disappointed. Everything was perfect with Laura - color, cut, service, hospitality and price. I had incredibly bad luck with another high end salon in Chicago (my hair looked great, but was brittle and not as soft as it had been - great excuse to sell me more product). I literally would rather shop around for a new gyno in a third world country than shop around for a new stylist. Dana saved the day! As a fellow generation x'er, she is easy to talk to, real, empathetic, and obviously talented. LAURA!! I took a leap of faith and booked an appointment while here on a business trip. Boy am I glad I did. I'm now trying to figure out how I can get back to Chicago every 6-8 weeks to have Laura do my hair! First, the view from the hair chair is amazing. What was supposed to be a "quick bleach wash" and tone session in my hotel bathroom turned very rapidly into a "shit shit shit now my hair is orange and I can't fix this myself" session. I came in from out of town and desperately needed a hair cut and color. On a Friday afternoon I decided to try my luck on Yelp and see what the area had to offer. Knowing the chances were SLIM to none, I reached out to Mane Space because of their reviews and location. They replied via Yelp within 10 minutes and secured a Sunday slot for me. The location was on the 18th floor of a building near my hotel - WOW. Nice classy studio. Incredibly clean and a jaw dropping view. Laura was so friendly and professional. I spent just under 2 hours in the chair. Laura not only worked wonders on my hair but explained in detail everything she was doing so that I could replicate it back home. I found Mane Space out of desperation while looking for a last minute hair stylist to help me with maternity photo shoot. I needed a service on Sunday morning one week before Christmas, and most salons in my neighborhood were not open on Sundays. A few minutes after bulk Yelp-messaging a few salons Dana (the owner) from Mane Space got back to me. My initial thought was "it's too far" as her salon is located 5 min Uber drive away from me (I know I'm THAT lazy). But she promptly scheduled my appointment at 9am on Sunday and efficiently communicated with me via yelp messaging, addressing all my questions and concerns instantly. So I showed up a few minutes early before my appointment to meet Laura, my hair stylist. Honestly I went with no expectation and even had a backup plan at my go-to hair salon that opens later than Mane, in case it didn't go well. An hour later, I walked out with all smiles as Laura delivered beyond what I asked for. She did deep conditioning, hair trim, and blowdry with the style I wanted, all under an hour. The price was more than reasonable, especially compared to my backup plan in Gold Coast. She apparently does wedding hair as well and frequently works Sunday mornings when she doesn't have wedding clients. My hair lasted more than several hours I needed for the photoshoot without extra hair products to make it all crunchy and yucky and still looked great the next morning before I washed it. I have had extensions for 3 years as my hair NEVER grew, but getting engaged recently, I finally had to commit to cutting my hair to make it naturally healthy (and save cash for the wedding rather than my hair). I looked on Yelp to find a good salon that I could trust to take out my extensions and then give me a hair cut to help me start the process of "recovery" from extensions, and I found Mane Space. I messaged them and within minutes I had a response. I let them know that going to the hairdressers for me is like going to a dentist for anyone else (I fear having short hair!) and that is probably not something a hairdresser wants to hear, ha! Set the appointment at 6:30, get there at 6:30, and there aren't any issues with the schedule. Every time I'm here it's a good experience, and top notch customer service. Found Kyra through salon apprentice, so this review is solely based on that experience. She was very nice and young but she did a TERRIBLE job with my hair. I asked for a gray balayage and showed pictures beforehand but I got something completely different, my roots are like 4 inches out and there is brassiness, all she did was do a crap just bleaching and then just toned it, there are cut of lines. I don't know in what world this is considered a balayage but it's definitely not what I asked for at all. I even gave her a nice tip because she was sweet but now I have to pay more to get my hair fixed. read more

Do NOT go here!!! Unless of course, you enjoy throwing money at someone for running their fingers through your hair. I never got a chance to write a review earlier but 3 months after the fact I am still FUMING about my experience with Dana. I made an appointment a week in advance for a haircut and blow-dry right before having to take a professional picture for work. Dana knew everything in advance and when I walked in, not only did she have an attitude right off the bat, she told me that I didn't need a haircut and tried to up-sell and convince me to come to her for hair extensions! WTF? She seemed so off that I decided to agree and not have her cut my hair (because I didn't want her to mess it up). I told her to just wash and blow dry it for my picture. She then asked me when the last time was that I washed my hair, I told her it was that morning and so she said I didn't need to have it washed again especially if I wanted soft curls in my hair. I said fine and let her start doing her thing. She took out a 1 inch curling iron and went over my hair in less than 10 mins and put 5-6 pathetic looking curls in my hair and then sprayed hairspray. When I told her I wanted something fuller she said that it wouldn't look professional and then started talking to the other girl about their next appointment - mind you I had only been in there for about 15 minutes when my appointment with her was for an hour. I was so annoyed that I just decided to leave instead of have her burn my hair off. When I asked her how much I owed her she looked at me and said, "oh don't worry, for you I'll just charge $45." WHAT THE BLEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I said she initially quoted me $50 for a haircut AND a blow-dry, she said, "Well that's just a package deal, $45 is how much I charge for a style." I couldn't believe it. I paid her and walked out, ended up canceling my work picture appointment because I was so dissatisfied with my hair. NEVER AGAIN will I go to Dana for ANYTHING!!! Also, her place is pretty much in a closet and shares space with a barber so while you're sitting in the chair, you're about 3 feet away from the barber's client whose chair is facing you as well- nothing much in between. Great way to make friends I guess. I ended up going to the Ladies & Gentlemen Salon and Spa in Block 37 - it's an Aveda salon and AMAZING!!!! You get a head, shoulder, neck and hand massage, shampoo AND style (imagine that, Dana) all for under $50 with a SENIOR stylist - mine was Sal and he was amazing!!! Oh and best part? There's a no tip policy. Haircuts with all the same perks are around $30. You'd be insane to pick Dana over them. I LOVE yelp and turn to it for everything and always have a great experience at places with so many 4-5 star reviews. This was the first time Yelp failed me. Consider yourself warned! read more

This is the 1st time I've ever been disappointed by the Yelp users recommendations. Dana gave me the worst haircut I've ever had. I have to go to another salon this week to have them fix it. The salon (office space) was so dry, that when she was cutting my hair there was so much static that my hair was flying everywhere (may be the reason for my bad cut?). I flew in Thursday night Sept. 1st into Chicago from LA and all I could think about was WHERE AM I GOING TO FIND A HAIR DRESSER TOMORROW, FRIDAY AFTERNOON, IN DOWNTOWN, LAST MINUTE?! So, after visiting the Art Institute of Chicago, I just did a Yelp search and in the top 3 was Dana's Beauty Box. I read her reviews and she had some great ones so I called. Within 30 minutes, I was sitting in her salon up on the 7th floor. The girl who did my hair, Leslie (I believe), was such a sweetheart! Both of them were! She flat-ironed my hair soooo sexy straight and that sucka was so paper-thin straight it lasted me all weekend (well, had to wash it by Sunday lol)! But again, she did an amazing job and I will totally go back to this place the next time I'm in Chicago! She also recommended this leave-in conditioner called Shuga. It's actually a very fine mist, smells like sugar (the hair spray smells like sugar cookies!) and it made my hair smell so nice and left it shiny. What can I say, I am so thankful I found Dana. A few months ago, I was a skeptical heavy haired chick who longed for longer hair, and now I am still a heavy haired chick, but happier than ever with her extensions. Dana did an amazing job with explaining the process of the keratin bond extensions and how they work. She was there to answer all the questions I had (and trust me, I kinda grilled her with questions) and made it affordable for me. I never thought I would be able to afford such quality hair extensions! I have thick, heavy hair... and LOTS of it. It was shorter than shoulder length and she brought it down to past shoulder. I have gotten tons of compliments on it, and she was able to blend it so well! My mom didn't even see how in the world it was possible to do that, she was sort of freaked out. I went to Dana not only because I needed to change hair stylists, but I also needed someone to do my hair and makeup for my wedding. I couldn't believe she was located downtown - super convenient. So I went and got a haircut - just to check things out. She has the cutest salon and she is a young, savvy business woman. I loved my haircut and we discussed hair and makeup options for my wedding. After that one meeting, I knew I could trust her. I then had a hair and makeup trial run for my wedding. I was skeptical about airbrush makeup and I wasn't sure she would be able to achieve the hairstyle I wanted. Let me tell you, I walked out of there with all my expectations met! I brought in some photos of my hair and she duplicated it with no problem. On my wedding day, Dana met me at a downtown hotel. The results were even better than the trial run! She also did hair and makeup for my bridal party and everyone looked amazing. We all looked like ourselves, but polished. Makeup was not thick or uncomfortable and it did not need much reapplication. My hair stayed in place and felt so natural. The thing about Dana is that she listens. She listens to what you want and she achieves. It is difficult to find a stylist who does that. Overall my experience was okay. I had a haircut and got my roots done. My hair dresser was Kaira. She did a satisfactory job. My roots do not match with my previous color very well, but it is not bad either. The entire job took 2 hours which I believe is a lot of time for this much work. I wanted to get my bangs shorter and thicker. She started off confident but seemed confused when she started cutting them off. A lot of time she held scissors quite close to my eyes, and I had to tell her to move them away. My last haircut was from Supercuts and I guess I will go back there after this experience. Compared to Kaira, the Supercuts lady seemed much more confident and the experience was much breezier. read more

Dana has cut my hair for four years, and I'm only getting around to reviewing her now because, having moved away from Chicago, I'm starting to realize that finding a new stylist is going to be utter hell. I can't say enough good things about Dana. She's really attentive to what kind of haircut you want, but is also superbly talented if you tell her "well, you're the expert, just do what you do and make it look good." Hot damn, it'll look good. I have short pixie hair that's pretty thick. Dana thins it out really well and it'll still be good-looking six weeks later. On the few occasions my hair has decided to grow back in with a vengeance, she's taken me in between cuts for a clean-up. . . no hassle and with a smile. So UPDATE on post-extensions. I decided after having them in for about 3 months that it was time to take them out before heading to New York City on a vacation. She took them out in no time (or what seemed like no time) and there was ZERO damage to my natural hair. I know. I couldn't believe it myself! She also did a cute cut for me to transition into another growing out phase. I really like the cut, and will probably go back in to have the extensions put back in again at some point soon, since my hair growth isn't going to meet my desires for awhile. Originally I booked a balayage appt with Kyra and I think they may have booked her next client too closely since it felt like she ran out of time... Thus I went home to sleep on it, and woke up still feeling like my hair was too brassy...an Asian person's worst hair nightmare lol... So I texted back to see if there was anything I could do to fix this issue, and Dana texted back that I could come back and get it corrected without any extra charge. Dedric tried his best but it seems like Kyra didn't leave the lightener on long enough... I'm happier with my hair even though it still has that "warmth" but hopefully he can fix it for me next time. I found this place via Salon Apprentice, and was approached by Perzia to get a cut and color for $60, a total steal in my opinion, but obviously I was a little apprehensive too! Situated on the 13th floor, the salon has gorgeous views of the lake and Millennium Park. Complimentary glasses of wine or cups of coffee are a nice touch. Perzia spent 10-15 minutes finding out exactly what I wanted. She is astute and a very good listener, and showed me a bunch of references until I was sure I had gotten my point across. She did a fantastic job with my cut and color and this was one of the very few times I went into a salon and came out completely satisfied with the service I had gotten. The partial highlights that Perzia gave me were subtle and gave my hair the sunkissed appearance I was aiming for. She is a very good communicator, and the only area for improvement I could suggest is perhaps providing a little explanation before every step of the process. When I did ask questions though, she was happy to answer them. What really impressed me though, was that not only did Perzia suggest what would look good on me, but she was also very quick and very assertive to dismiss hairstyles that would NOT flatter. This saved me from getting yet another unflattering shaggy bob from an over ambitious and eager to please stylist. In a nutshell: good customer service, knowledgeable and honest stylists and AMAZING views of the lake. I will certainly be back, even without the discounted price! read more
