Farmhouse and Frozen Caramel Chiller
Steph R.

I was starving as usual and noticed the only place near by was McDonald's so I was making my way to McDonald's and then I saw this bagel spot and instantly changed my mind. I got the farm house bagel breakfast sandwich and a caramel chiller coffee. I don't eat pork so they substituted the ham for turkey and the bacon for turkey bacon. The bagel was warm and freshly made I ate half and was full. The coffee wasn't great but drinkable lol (mostly syrup no coffee) I did get a stomach ache after. Place was clean I think the owner or manager who ever he was kept wiping every table after each customer left, he checked that the inventory was fresh, vacuumed the floor, they wore gloves and face mask while preparing the food. I'd definitely come back for an egg sandwich with a hash brown in it. I paid $12 with my Apple Cash card so it was technically free. I was happy.

I cannot lie, I expected this to be just another bagel joint. However I was very very impressed, bacon was cooked to perfection. The cheese was melted perfectly and the bagel held up through it all. Perfect amount of chew to it. Reminded me of a NYC bagel from the ore covid days. The cold brew was strong too, the way I like it. I forgot to take a picture of the chocolate chip muffin. That too was good.!!

Not the best bagel BUT they are very fast and get the job done when you are on the Run for breakfast. I much prefer a mom pop café or deli. I like my bagels BOILEDDDDDD first they don't boil them here

Stopped in for a breakfast sandwich and café. Busy area on the weekends. Get packed in the parking lot but there is additional parking in the back. Fast service & staff is friendly. I forget the woman that helped me she had duck earrings she was helpful and friendly. Might be a local here after my walks around the lake.

Fresh bagels with many options to choose from. The coffee was very good as well, the customer service was on point!

Good bagels and sandwiches! A little pricier but I noticed the bagels are smaller than other local places. Ordered ahead to pick up and the customer service was great - social distancing protocols in place and very respectful staff.

Dirt in the salad

I placed an order the other day for a salad and they don't wash their lettuce. Especially during COVID, who doesn't wash their lettuce? It was disgusting. I ended up throwing out my salad and I will never be back.

Location is either closed or under construction. Sign is covered and inside is gutted.

Anyway, since then I've been back 3 more times; once for breakfast and twice for brunch. And while I'm confessing, the two times for lunch were on subsequent days. Yeah, they're that good. Actually, their chicken salad on a croissant is the best I've ever had and in my advanced years I've had a crapload of chicken salad. The have a nice sized coffee bar, decorated beautifully with some pretty delicious looking pastries. I'm on an anti-sweet phase so I'm basing my opinion on only on appearance. Then there's a seating area when you can eat, served by a friendly attentive staff and an adjacent boutique area where you can purchase housewares, clothing and other cool stuff. I'm not in Maplewood all that often, generally when I'm shopping at the equally awesome City Workshop but when I do, I always make sure to hit up Perch. You should too. 1/2 star deduction because they don't offer fake sugar, just that Stevia crap which is gross.

The corned beef is homemade and was exactly what I was looking for. The guy behind the counter was genuinely friendly and welcoming to everyone. Not sure if he was the owner but he kinda gave off those vibes. The dining room was empty while I was there but a few people came in for takeout while I was there so I get the feeling that most people get their food to go. Definitely give it a try if you are in the area. I don't think you'll find anywhere else putting out food that good for so cheap.

I got the roasted portabella sammy on rosemary focaccia. It comes with tomato confit, pickled red onion, sautéed kale and olive tapenade, yum. It was quite tasty and even though it looked kinda small at first compared to gut busters from some other sandwich shops it proved to be plenty filling. I'd love to see more creative vegetarian offerings from Valley Street and other local spots as well. Thanks for an option other than mozzarella and tomatoes! I'm not vegetarian but it's nice to have a meat-free meal now and again.

I'm traveling through NJ alone today, so I pull off I-78 in Maplewood and find the Park Wood Diner. This is an old school corner diner with a rear wraparound parking lot that's locally popular. I grab a seat at the counter and start checking out the menu. The breakfast menu card is tabloid sized and filled with choices on both sides and is available all day. I'm afraid to see what the lunch and dinner menu looks like. One of my breakfast favorites is corned beef hash and I get it with 2 eggs sunny side up with home fries and white toast. I love laying the oozy yolk onto a slice of toast and if there's any bread left, use it to sop up any runny yolk left on the plate. Of course, the yolk runs onto the hash and home fries, too. After this leisurely filling breakfast, can I even think about lunch or maybe dinner? I'll have to make a point to come back to see what's in store on the lunch menu. Maybe a pastrami or corned beef on rye or a comforting meatloaf? See you next time!

There is almost always music playing and I really appreciate them taking orders over the phone and online. They also have this cool complimentary option of personalizing your cup with a black & white photo of you if you ask. I've also had the turmeric latte and the avocado toast which are worth getting again. The toast was fresh and flavorful. They have an enclosed booth that looks like it seats 4. Great for a little open privacy. The couches are quite comfortable as well. They have punch cards which is good, but I'm terrible with remembering so it would be great if they went digital with rewards. Maybe 1 point per visit or 1 point per $1 with tiered rewards. It's the only coffee shop I go to in the area that doesn't have digital rewards. Would love to see more vegan options on the menu, maybe a cinnamon roll lol. Con is they open late for a cafe. It's cozy, small, has warm décor, friendly staff, just enough seating, and the music overhead was chef's kiss. And bonus: it's a Black-owned business, which I will always support. We ordered a small iced coffee with oat milk and sugar, an iced chai latte, the grilled cheese with arugula, and the egg platter. Everything was pretty good -- I wasn't blown away, but it was solid and seasoned well. I really wanted to try the French toast because I've heard so many good things, but they told me it would be a 30-minute wait. Our food ended up taking about 20 minutes anyway, so honestly, I probably should've just held on and waited for it. Next time! Prices are what you'd expect for a coffee shop in the suburbs of West Orange. We lucked out with a parking spot right in front, but parking in that area can definitely be tricky. They also sell Harper's Café merch -- t-shirts, sweatshirts, and quarter zips. I'm definitely going back to try the French toast and the pancakes because I saw several people ordering them, so they must be worth it. This is a great place to hang out, read a book, get some work done, chat with a friend, or vibe solo. Harper's Café gives you all the good feels, and I'll absolutely be returning. One note: the menu is limited, and not everything you see online may be available that day -- just something to keep in mind.
