We tried out the new tapas bar today and had a wonderful time. We've been to the regular cafe many times and are diehard fans of their brunch options and espresso drinks. This bar/dinner option is a great addition to the neighborhood, and we will be back! We both enjoyed delicious drinks and a well made (and large!) tapa. My one critique is that our waters came with plastic straws in them. I know this is small, but I am sensitive to the use of single-use plastics, especially in such unnecessary ways. I hope in the future they will transition to providing straws only to those who explicitly ask for one. I am happy to have a new place to dine in Westville and can't wait to sit on the patio with a drink this summer. I hope Manjares will consider their environmental impact, so I can feel good about supporting them! Straws are a good place to start! read more

Manjares is a delightful cafe with lots of natural light. I went there for brunch and would happily return. It is on the small side though and the seating arrangement is tight so I wouldn't recommend going with a large group. I had the Roasted Pepper, Caramelized Onions, Zucchini and Mushrooms omelet. The ingredients were so fresh and the omelet was not greasy or heavy at all. It came with 3 small sides - mangu (mashed green plantains), yucca and areaps (corn cakes) - and they were all delicious. The omelet was served on a notepad plate which was such a cute touch. I also had the lemon cream blueberry pastry, which was lovely and I would definitely get again. The chocolate croissant could've used more chocolate in my opinion, but it was decent. The coffee sufficed though it wasn't anything special. The cashier who took my order seemed really confused the whole time and was not as warm or welcoming as I would expect at this kind of cafe, but perhaps she was new or having a bad morning. read more

If I could give zero stars it would be too much. Our evening started off poorly. My husband ordered a beer and I a glass of pinot grigio. The waitress brought his beer and nothing for me and didn't say anything. We waited and about 5 minutes later the bartender came over to tell us the pinot had been in the "closet" and was warm. He put it on ice and it would be ready when our meals came. If I had realized that would be more than a half hour later I probably would have ordered something else. The evening went downhill from there. After sitting another 20 minutes (and remember I still had nothing to drink) I flagged the waitress and asked if we could order. She came back and we ordered one small dish to share to start and two large dishes as our main course. About 15 minutes later the ceviche my husband ordered as a main dish came to the table and I finally got my wine. We were a bit taken aback though since we hadn't had our app first but decided to go with the flow. My main came out (no exaggeration as I was timing it) 15 minutes after my husband was served his main. He had finished his dish and I quickly ate mine - I ordered a rare steak but got a medium one. The plaintains were oily and the rice was dry. On the positive side the fried egg on the rice was perfectly cooked. We never got the small plate we ordered. We asked for the check. At no time did anyone apologize for the shoddy service or comp anything. We left and will never be back. It was truly a bad experience. read more

I had brunch here and it was a wonderful food experience. I had an exquisite sun-dried tomato, feta, and spinach omelette made with organic eggs. Neglected making my wife's drink, made us wait 20 minutes for her selection while I had my smoothie delivered in 5 minutes...mine was in a glass, hers in plastic...never gave us a menu, had to get one ourselves...expensive - I get it, taxes are high on New Haven CT and to get quality ingredients, it costs more...but when you pay in advance and are asked for a tip...TIP stands for 'To Insure Promptness'...the staff ruined our experience...what a shame... read more

Pros: Their americano is the best I have had in New Haven. The outdoor seating area is really nice, especially on Sundays when the farmer's market is happening across the street. The indoor space is very cute, and the service is great. Cons: The food is hit-or-miss. Ordering the same thing from week to week will get you variable-quality results. She claimed she didn't even know what it was, and seemed mistrusting of us. Waitress ended up honoring the coupon I'd paid for in advance via restaurant.com website, but not without stalling and questioning me first. It was kind of an embarrassment actually. Again, the food was tasty and fresh. Though we had to remind them (twice) to bring over our juices to the other side of the restaurant. It took over an hour to get the drinks (food was delivered prior to drinks.) It wasn't even busy. We went to Manjares for lunch. I ordered a ham and cheese sandwich and my partner ordered the burrito plate (Although it wasn't wrapped in typical burrito fashion, it had a pile of rice with steak and what it appeared to be like an omelette style egg on top of the rice. I found myself at Manjares on Mother's Day because my usual brunch spots were packed and had multi-hour waits. I had never been to Manjares, but was intrigued by the menu and the mostly-positive reviews. We had a tasty meal, though it wasn't mind blowing. I especially liked the menu because it had so many different options: I have an egg allergy, and most breakfast/brunch menus have very few non-egg offerings, but at Manjares I had several dishes to choose from. The service was better than most Yelp reviews reported. There was some ambiguity when we first got there as to whether we were to order at the counter and then sit down, or wait for table service. This bothered my girlfriend more than it bothered me. We decided to sit down, and someone did come to take our order a few minutes later, but it seems like they also take orders from the counter. Our food came out very quickly, which was great because we were starving, but our server did forget to bring the coffees we ordered, and the customers at an adjacent table had the same problem. The restaurant is cute and thoughtfully decorated, and the bathrooms were really clean. There were families there, couples of all ages, and groups of friends eating together. It seems like a really relaxed, neighborhood-y kinda place, which is nice to find. read more

Their smoked salmon and cream cheese or sundried tomato, spinach, and feta omelettes are excellent, as are the breakfast burritos. Whatever you choose, I'd recommend adding the "Caribbean complement" of yucca, plantains, and an arepa for a unique and tasty touch. The indoor and outdoor seating are both comfortable, and if you're there on a Sunday you can head across the street to the farmer's market once you've finished eating. It's family-run and the service is unhurried, to say the least. Not the best choice if you're in a rush, but if like me you believe that brunch should be a relaxed experience, you probably won't have any issues. I've also been here once in the evening for dinner, though according to their website they're no longer open past 3:00 pm, so I'm honestly not sure if that's still an option. But be warned: You'll end up making this your first-pick place after that. The breakfast burrito was delish, but I could only eat half, the portions are that generous. I'm not a coffee drinker anymore because coffee has become so commercialized in the US, and popular brands are often mistaken for quality, but if I could get coffee like Manjares makes it, it would become my morning drink again. The locals will have a place to relax and drink and look at art. I loved the sofa in the bar and I think they need many more sofas and comfortable sitting chairs. Manjares is a great hidden wonder of a cafe. The food is excellent - soft, flaky pasties, delicious hearty breakfast sandwiches, and refreshing, fruity smoothies. The staff is always kind and attentive. Both the indoor and outdoor seating have a nice atmosphere. Overall, a great cafe that everyone should try at least once. My only complaint is that they tend to be rather slow. I once went with some friends for happy-hour and it would take the servers half an hour just to bring us another drink, although it didn't look busy. I have enjoyed Manjares over the past few years as a place to look out at the world on a busy corner. The food is honest, and fairly priced. So now, it is opened for dinner. The sign that says, "Open" is on the side that is CLOSED after 3pm. So a sign would be nice. I was not the only confused person, and I went down the block to find the other door opened, and tried to encourage the other potential patrons to come in, but they were put off, sadly. I went into a lovely spot, and saw the ONE person working there was on his phone. I tried to sit down, and he was still on the phone. Not talking, just checking messages. I sat down, and he was still on his phone. "Hello???" "Yes we are opened." Great. Uhhh, "Do you have an outlet so that I can work on my computer?" "No." "OH" "Well, we do at the bar." "Well then, I shall sit there." I sat there for a long time. He was still checking messages on his phone. "HELLO? May I order something?" What happened next was a lovely conversation about how he is hoping to make the spot popular, and how I thought there are things they could do that would help. I am a big believer in encouraging local businesses. I LIKE my neighborhood, and want to see things succeed. He was terribly nice, but the FIRST thing he said, when I found my place at the bar was, "Would you like me to cut your off when you've had too much?" WHAAAAAT? I haven't ordered more than a glass of wine, and I am to depend on him to tell me when I have had too much? I am not a college student, and even if I were, that is NOT the way to tend a new customer in a new bar. We had a lovely conversation, not because he invited it, but because I DID. I asked him about what they want to do in this perfectly situated bistro/tapas bar in a busy corner of New Haven. We discussed things that might work, I offered suggestions. And then he walked away. Back to the phone. More people came in, and he attended them immediately. I had to ask for the food I ordered, once again, taking him from his messaging on his phone. The shrimp in a bed of plantains was delicious, albeit a bit greasy, however, quite reasonably priced. Can you guess where he was when I needed the check? Yep, texting on his phone. So, I have great hopes for this evening offering, but seriously, the bartender needs to learn a bit more than he thinks he already knows. We've only been here once, and on a whim while at the farmer's market across the street. We had a panini with manchego and fig confit-- very good. I can't remember what the kids had- some sort of turkey sandwich- but the turkey was roasted in house and cut in thick slices- also good. My favorite part, however, and the reason I'm writing this review, is that the staff was extremely friendly and personable. As we were leaving they offered us free cupcakes-- who can not like free cupcakes? And as New England becomes characterized less by village institutions and more by chains, a local shop with friendly owners is no mean thing. Stopped in for coffee to go after visiting the farmer's market. The counter help were nice kids, but they were in way over their heads and were having trouble with simple stuff. While waiting a very long time for coffee, we saw people growing impatient waiting for food and checks, and the experienced waitstaff were really hustling to compensate. The place was busy and the owner was pleasant and apologized for the wait. The coffee wasn't as strong as I remember from when Manjares first opened several years ago, and my latte was only so-so. Oh Wow!! This is my fifth time at this neighborhood gem, even though, I'm not in the neighborhood - those lucky New Havener!! This restaurant is consistent I've had another "Worth It" meal! We started with the Ensalada del Mar which was so fresh and with 4 jumbo shrimp - not an oxymoron. Also the ensalads rusa - another excellent dish -what a mixture -beets, carrots, etc... Next came the Patelon - WOW sweet plantains with beef. ( Not like my Mom made, but better!!) We had Croquetas de bacalao - the dill mayo just added to the cod croquettes. My husband loves the empanadas! What a choice of wines the hostess made was fabulous! The wine was only $24. Next was the Garbanzoz Criollos - the chickpeas Lastly, the Pintxos Mar y Tierra - skewers of beef, chicken and shrimp! I just want to say our meal was fabulous and we'll be back again SOON. I love this place and go here often. The coffee is good, pastries are yummy and the location is great. The staff is friendly. So far, food is very good. I enjoy the arepas that are served with the eggs since you can't find that very often in this area. I have also had the spanish tortilla that is very good. The only negative is that sometimes the service can be slow. I would say that it depends on the day you go and how busy the place is. However, this place is the type where you want to hang out and stay awhile so I do not mind that it takes a little longer at times. It is across from farmer's market, has plenty of seating and wi-fi.
