Wonderful midsize hotel on the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. Great staff, wonderful swimming…read morepool, very private grounds, large room with excellent amenities. Why not five stars? The WiFi never once worked in our room, and the staff kept making excuses, like they expected it would. But other guests had the same problem. We had to go outside or to the lobby to connect. There is no restaurant at the hotel, and it's a healthy walk to the downtown commercial area. Their bar/pub is nice and they will order food in for you, which we did one night. But it's not a real meal. Another night we did the 25 minute walk each way to a great restaurant, but had to be sure we got back before they locked the gate at 11pm. Hotel La Villa Eugene did have a few drawbacks we didn't expect.

I have been a frequent visitor in Villa Eugène since it first opened in 2005…read more I have stayed in several different rooms through out the years and I can say that in general that the staff is nice, welcoming and attentive. When we checked in, we were asked if we had dinner plans and if there were anything that they could help us with. There is a one but thought and that is the breakfast. If you are looking forward to tucking into some fresh vegetables and fresh ingredients and larger choice of breakfast ingredients, it won't happen. The breakfast was very much focused on a selection of cold meats, couple of cheeses, some hard boiled eggs (cold by the time I had them), typical French pastries and selection of jams. They also have a small home made ready made fruit salads and juices ready for crabs in the small fridges. The breakfast: it is not bad by no means but it does leave you for wanting something more, a bit more " va va voom" for a five star hotel. The breakfast is the main reason for the evaluation of four stars.

What a nice find! A well run, modern Best Western hotel in a historical building in downtown…read morePeronne, the heart of the battle of the Somme. Just around the corner you will find a beautiful, old stronghold that contains, as far as we understand, an exhibit of the history of the great war. Enough little restaurants and bistro's to choose from for dinner within walking distance . The hotel itself is very clean, and our room was spacious with a nice bathroom with walk in shower. Two chairs to sit in. Breakfast was included, and it's a great buffet with plenty to choose from. Fresh breads, eggs, deli cheeses, and meats, fruit, etc. And on top of this all it is located, conveniently near the A1, the thoroughfare from the North to Paris. Parking on the street nearby and behind the church. Saturday mornings there is market, so be sure to park behind the church on Friday night. We will be back ;-)

Rooms are small but clean and comfortable and the hotel is right in the town centre. Excellent value and impeccable service. Good spot to stay if you are touring the battlefields
