I recently went to Maple View Farm with some friends and loved it! The staff was really friendly and let us sample as many flavors as we wanted, which made choosing hard because everything was so creamy and good. We planned to share a banana split, but unfortunately they were out of bananas, which was a bit of a bummer. Even on a cold day, the ice cream was still delicious. Located out in the country among beautiful fields and the dairy farm. We arrived about 7:30 and the line was really long but we decided to wait. I was beginning to wonder if we would make it in before 9:00 when they closed. There is not a store except a freezer with milk and ice creams. You can get ice cream in a cone or a cup. I noticed almost everyone had a cup. You can choose one to four scoops and they have a wide variety of toppings. I got one scoop of butter pecan and one scoop of praline. Both were full of nuts. We are regulars at Maple View and we were highly disappointed this time around. I ordered my normal mint chocolate chip with hot fudge. The ice cream was very gritty. Brought it back in and no credit or offer for another flavor. We also waited at least an hour, four people behind the counter and only two making up the ice cream, the other at the cash register with lots of wait time. The other boy was making cones and bowls forming them over the molds with his bare hands, and I don't mean just a light touch but completely covering them and patting. Went on fairly busy Sunday afternoon. The people scooping ice cream and working the front weren't wearing gloves and were handling the cones with their bare hands. Some of the best ice cream I have ever had and an absolutely amazing experience overall. They are popular and we went on a Saturday afternoon so there was a line to the door but it moved very quickly. The staff were not only fast but also very friendly. They do samples if you wanna try a flavor before ordering. Along with their many flavors to choose from they also have a creations menu with 19 specialty sundaes options, a banana split menu with 7 varieties, a milkshake menu with 9 options, and a float menu with 10 options. Flavors are subject to availability but they also sell pints of ice cream. When we came in we saw milk, half and half, heavy cream, butter, buttermilk, eggs, and cheese for sale as well. The bathrooms were very clean. For seating they have rocking chairs on the porch in the front and some picnic tables and a grass area on the side where people had blankets. Also some people playing frisbee. We are in Durham and it was a 20 minute drive. We would definitely make the drive again. If you're looking for the BEST ice cream spot in RDU, you need to check this place out. It is quite a drive as it is located on a farm ~ 30 minutes from Durham, but the drive is well worth it on a hot sunny day! There is a great selection of flavors and you are able to purchase pints to take home. When I visited over the summer, the wait was around 30-40 minutes, but it was well worth it! I would love to see a more inclusive selection of at least 1-2 creamy non-dairy/vegan options. That said, the view is still something worth visiting. I have come here with my huge staff from work, friends, dates, etc. It's a hidden gem for any crowd! I would recommend coming on a warmer day and bringing a picnic blanket to sit on, as there is no seating indoors. The area, while a bit off the beaten path, is fantastic. Plenty of outdoor grassy yard (or rather large field) to sit in with makeshift shaded tents set up for those wanting to avoid the sun. The porch is filled with rocking chairs and there's a nice thin piece of wood that runs along the back so you won't over rock while eating your dairy goodness. I look forward to stopping by again. What I got: Three scopes and a waffle cone ($7.36) - 4.5* for this very generously scooped treat. My flavours: Peach - 3* light and refreshing but my least favourite of the three. I'd opt out for a different fruity flavour next time. Double chocolate peanut butter - 4.5* rich and the peanut butter dough balls are delicious though I didn't love the after taste of the dough balls. Mint chocolate chip - 5* refreshing and tastes like natural mint, none of the artificial taste at all. Waffles cone - 3.5* pretty average cone when it comes to taste. In the summer, this place is bustling with students, families, and everyone in between, so expect to wait in long lines and plan accordingly. ICE CREAM: A single scoop will cost $3.40. This price is a STEAL for the generous amount of ice cream in that single scoop. Not only are you able to select up to 2 different flavors, but you're also able to ask for a cake cone on the side at no charge. The ice cream itself packs a burst of flavor in every bite, regardless of which flavor you decide. The ice cream is "chewy" and retains its shape pretty well, even in the summer heat. An amazing place and a must-do for anybody in the area. The views are amazing and it has a great environment. The ice cream is great, packed with flavor and very creamy. The milk and other goods are also great. The service is always friendly and fairly prompt, even when the line is wrapped around the parking lot. There are some tables to sit at but you can also just sit on the grass in a nice day and enjoy the views and just hang out. I feel like the hour of time wasted in the long line would've been faster if the coworkers weren't flirting or hiding in the back. When I asked about a sample the employee working told me "we don't do samples anymore" but having a trash can full of sample spoons tell me different. Also why on earth would you have your waffle iron running but no waffle cones? If you are open until 9 you should at least have enough cones to last you until you close.
