FYI - The toilet cleans itself after each use, so be patient. Oh, and I can NOT recommend the urinal... Service - Good. They are here to sell. Price - From inexpensive to expensive. My swan song from a disappointing trip in the bird department. Off the eye test, it doesn't get much better. The beautiful sight of tissi's rotating in front of a fire breathing oven, potatoes in the tray below collecting the chicken juices as they fell, had me ready to run around the Bastille plaza yelling "LE MOUVEMENT!!". I thought this was going to be my first high level bird in the City of Light. Much to my chagrin, the one I got was just lukewarm. I was ready for my fingerprints to be fully burned off. There was so much potential here, but as always, I have to judge what's in front of me. If I don't have my integrity I have nothing. It landed at an 8.1/10 on the restaurant scale which is good, but if it was hot it could have been up there with the greats in the rare 9 territory. My family and I came for lunch on a weekday, so not all of the food stalls were open. We did a couple laps around the market, looking at the various types of food offered. The place has many types of cuisines, with both takeout and sit down options. For lunch, the majority of our group decided on trying the Italian restaurant. My mother had her own idea of what she wanted for lunch and wandered over to another restaurant. I like that you can pick and choose and find something that suits all. At the Italian place, I ordered the caprese and so did my aunt. My little cousin went with the lasagna and nephew ordered the spaghetti with clams. My sister went with this pasta with a marinara sauce. Food was delicious and affordable. After our meal, we walked around again and I ended up buying cheeses and crackers from the Fromager. Service wasn't too friendly, but really didn't mind as I was getting this to go. I later learned that the Marche des enfants rouges is the oldest market in Paris and dates back to 1628. I really love the history behind the market and the food that we ate that day. The only downside is that almost half of the places were closed due to the day that we went, so you never know what will be offered.

I opted instead for Marche d'Aligre, reasoning that it featured not only a small flea market but also a farmer's market and a market hall. The guide I consulted described Marche d'Aligre as a spot for locals, featuring some of the cheapest produce in Paris. I can't speak to that but I did think everything - including the many meats, seafood, cheeses, and more in the market hall - looked quite fabulous. The swap meet? A little less so. The sole flea market thing that caught my eye suddenly jumped in price when I pulled out my cash but I did see one vendor actively negotiate with a tourist when she found a price out of her reach. That said, this isn't a flea market I'd set out for again; it's plaza-sized (maybe 20 vendors) and the offerings struck me as rather junky. If I had time for only one of Paris' great open-air food markets this isn't the one I'd choose despite the fact that I enjoyed my visit here.

Chef pointed out all the local ingredients and what is imported. He obviously had his favorite vendors, as they tried to interest him in special selections. This market, as many as I found in Paris, are fabulous. Blocks long presenting a ton of diverse food items. Fresh fruits and vegetables that usually looked better than in stores. Various poultry- duck, chicken and premade pâté. Tons of seafood. Always a few cultural dishes, Mediterranean. Get of the touristy museum path and discover Paris, its food and markets.

We picked up the most incredible tabouleh salad and basil tapenade from a vendor selling all sorts of meditteranean inspired food including build your own meditteranean burritos!! We picked up a mix of decadent olives at the local olive and dried fruit vendor. Tomatoes were delicious and about 2.90 e for a medium bag. We also picked up fresh radishes and carrots. The vendors were kind and polite and were understanding of our limited French language. We had left over bread and cheese available for our afternoon picnic otherwise we would have purchased some of the most delicious looking cheeses and salamis at this market. The salami man has salamis with dried figs, herbs de Provence, and nearly everything in between. He offers samples and will vacuum seal your purchased salamis for an extra .50 e. So cozy and welcoming you forget you are in a city of millions of people. We have visited here many times since that first visit and each one has been better than the previous visit. We made friends with the fromanger, butcher, baker and the cozy corner cafe'. We can't wait to visit again.
