Crowded, disorganised and dirty! We visited this flea market on a Sunday morning and it was incredibly crowded and hard to move around. There were queues everywhere, it was grimy and there lots of stall selling low quality merchandise. Quite disappointing!! read more

This place is amazing. Well for me at least. It had everything. It had clothes that were cheap but still looked like it was new or still in good condition. You can find stuff from your head to toe like hats, shirts, sweaters, jackets, jogging pants, pants, boots and shoes, sneakers, some traditional clothing, even underwear and socks; they had it all. Aside from the clothing, I also loved the food section. They were selling fresh produce like vegetables and different kinds of olives. There were also some fruits like berries and bananas. But wait, they didn't stop there. They also had cooked food like rotisserie chicken (they're so yummy and not too expensive), some thai food, chinese food, cooked rice, ribs, oh my gosh I just want to buy all their food. Wazemmes is definitely something I miss about Sunday mornings - going to this amazing market was an almost weekly occurrence when I lived in Lille! Of course, there were some Sundays when getting up in time for Wazemmes wasn't an option (possibly alcohol related...) but it was always worth the effort! While there are many vendors selling clothes, bags and other such things, my favourite thing about this market was definitely the food (shocker, I know!) - I used to get rotisserie chicken, potatoes and ribs, and they would last me a couple of days - the chicken made excellent sandwich fillings for Uni, with ribs and potatoes for dinner, everything was so yummy I didn't mind eating the same thing more than once a week! (Something else I loved doing was dipping bread into the juices of the rotisserie chicken, but this isn't something I recommend if you value your cholesterol or waistline...oh how delicious it was though!!) Another couple of delights that I really miss eating are bricks and what we called doughnuts - I'm not sure if they were actually doughnuts but they were certainly wonderful. Bricks are a Tunisian delicacy, comprising of a special kind of pastry, filled with tuna, egg, parsley and cheese, which is then wrapped up and deep fried. These provided breakfast of a Sunday and they are SO GOOD. The doughnuts were massive and totally covered in sugar, no point caring anything about calories where those bad boys were concerned! There are loads of stalls selling fruit and bread, and one which sells a massive range of tasty olives, if you're a foodie you really are spoilt for choice here! The indoor market is pretty good as well, but not something I was ever really interested in as much. However, a Brazilian friend of mine once discovered that one of the stalls in there sold Guaraná, which is a soft drink Brazilians go absolutely nuts for - it's like their equivalent of Irn Bru for Scottish people! As she was craving it quite badly by that point, it was great to see how excited she was about it! It is also very tasty, I have to say :) The only downside to Wazemmes is that you do have to watch out for the pickpockets and beggars who hang about round it. I never had anything stolen while I was there and neither did any of my friends, but we were always really careful and kept our possessions close! There's a really lovely bakery right next to the market as well, which always has the best displays (I'll update this with its name when I remember/find it!) If you're looking for some delicious food and a bit of a taste of Lille life, Wazemmes is the place to go! read more

Cross the road from the Gambetta metro station and you are almost there, the Wazemmes market offers an alternative experience in Lille. Open on Sundays and also some weekdays, there is a good range of items on offer here (food items such as fruit and meat to household decorations and other second hand items), many of which are decent value for money. Above all, it is the general experience and atmosphere that sets this market apart from the other shopping streets in Lille, this area felt much more lively and diverse. Some may worry about the area, especially if walking along one or two of the nearby streets, however, as with all places, as long as you are careful with your possessions and sensible in actions, I did not feel this area is too risky. read more
