The Schoggigipfeli is beyond any chocolate croissant you've ever experienced. Get there when it opens, and you eat them while the chocolate is still hot. Caution, they often sell out before lunch. My personal favorite is the burgdorferli, (I hope I'm spelling that right) It's the same chocolate as whiskey stengeli, but without the whiskey. If you don't have the Geld to drop on the Whiskey-Stengeli, please, please, please, get this, you will not regret it. Please, if you you find yourself in Basel, make this a priority stop, it's only two or three stops from the SBB. It's just as important as any museum you will visit. The very, very best of Switzerland.

The almond horns, fresh rolls and the sausage rolls were a must for breakfast. The whiskey chocolates were absolutely fantastic! I was just sorry that they were too delicate for me to tote around for the week I was on a river cruise, so that I could bring them back to the States. Maître Bernard Antony is an institution almost like the living national treasures in Japan. He IS…read morethe world's most renowned Fromager Affineur in his little shop in southern Alsace ca 20 minutes drive by car from Basel (CH), opened 1982. He buys young top quality cheese, about 150 artisanal produced kinds from raw milk, mainly from France. He stores them in his vast cellars until their perfect maturity. Only then he sells them in the shop or in a small restaurant, called Sundgauaer Kaes-Kaller. I once rented a bus and went with 25 people there to enjoy his special cheese menu "Cérémonie de Fromage", a six course meal, with a variety of cheese on each plate (totalling over 22 cheese varieties you will be able to taste), and served with the wines perfectly matching. Be warned, his menu consists almost only of cheese. You'll get bread and potatoes, but don't expect a traditional mix with other items like meat or salad. It's all about Cheese. He joins the guests and talks either about the products (both wine or cheese) or about one of his many adventures. He usually delivers cheese to the presidential inauguration in Matignon (Paris), the White House, many Five Star Chefs, Châteaux and numerous high profile families from politics or society. His fame goes around the globe, photos on the wall are there to prove it. I speak French with him but really love to hear him talk Alsässer Diitsch... Useless to say if you are not into cheese, there is nothing more there... but if you are, it is the place to find mature cheese of the highest quality. To me, living in Switzerland, the prices are modest, particularly when I consider the TOP quality of the products. Maître Anthony is a very friendly old chap, and luckily for us his son Jean François has decided to follow his father. We only can hope he becomes as professional as his father! For any gastro interested tourist this is a MUST!

We found this option on Yelp, and it is a pretty cool building and very quaint inside. Unfortunately, the person behind the counter, and our server, did not speak any English...and we didn't speak German. And the menu was in German. So we really struggled to order our breakfast. But they were friendly, and we did manage to order something that we were okay with. However, in hind sight, we should have just stood at the counter and pointed to something in the display case to get the pastry or egg dish we wanted. Oh well, maybe next time!
