My experience with Family Practice Associates of Corpus Christi has been pleasant and satisfactory…read more I went under Dr. Bruce Mertz after my lifelong family doctor down the street (Schulze Sr.) finally retired and I have the former office to thank for the good referral. Dr. Mertz sets his patients at ease. He doesn't beat around the bush, answers all our questions with a thorough explanation, offers prevention advice, and has a very proficient practice. The paperwork that is shared with the patient is modern and easy to follow. The admin help visibly work off the options of the health insurance I am using. The low waiting times with the waiting room and exam room have been impressive versus what I read of elsewhere. The overall operation is set up to run efficiently, which is too rare in the healthcare industry. The waiting area is large, clean and well-kept. I would recommend this practice to family and friends.

I was waiting hours and hours in the waiting room of my previous family practitioner and it was becoming a burden. He was a wonderful physician but the wait time was just too much. Luckily I found Family Practice Associates of Corpus Christi and was accepted as a new patient. That was about six months ago. Both my wife and I switched to Dr. Mertz. Dr. Mertz is fantastic. He doesn't beat around the bush, answers all our questions with a thorough explanation, and has a very proficient practice. Both my wife and I have seen Dr. Mertz several times since becoming his patients and every time we only spent five to ten minutes in the waiting room and only a couple minutes in the exam room before Dr. Mertz came in. I only wish I had found Dr. Mertz when I retired to Corpus Christi in 2005. My life would have been much better from a medical standpoint. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention his staff and the waiting area. His staff is wonderful in every regard. And the waiting area is large and clean. If you're considering Family Practice Associates of Corpus Christi, don't hesitate to give them a call. And by all means as to be assigned to Dr. Mertz.

Readers, Decide for yourselves. John Alan Carmichael recently, in February 2016, was contacted…read moreabout a patient arriving after suffering a stroke. Carmichael met this patient at the Bayview Hopital in Corpus and told her children (all grown) that she had suffered a major bleeding stroke, that her brain had sustained a devastating pull away from her skull with devastating consequences. She had bled in and around her brain and would not recover. John Alan Carmichael told them she needed to be sent a hospice and allowed to die after being denied food or water. Death could take anywhere from a few days to two weeks. Her children did that and sent the patient to Angel Bright Hospice in Corpus. A burial site was chosen, the church was reserved for the services. Lawyers were called in to evaluate her estate. Discussions were had on how to dress her in the casket. Her three children made all of the decisions based on John Alan Carmichael's recommendation that she go to hospice and denied food and water. Many of the family drove from all over Texas and California to say good bye It was a gruesome time. I flew into Texas from California and traveled from Austin to Corpus to see my sister. She had been denied food and water for four days at that point. I was terrified to see her in this state and to say goodbye. As I was walking into the hospice, I saw John Alan Carmichael in the hospice, I don't know what he was doing. Probably checking to see if she was still alive. When he saw me, he quickly darted out of the hospice and drove away quickly. I knew John Alan Carmichael from prior experiences. One of my other sisters had suffered a stroke a few years prior and was admitted to Bayview Hospital in Corpus as the patient of John Alan Carmichael. My sister reports that John Alan Carmichael only saw her for about 90 seconds and suggested she go home with olive oil. This sister was conscious and aware of what was happening and insisted on being transferred to Spohn Hospital and in the care of her excellent neurologist Dr.Morgan Campbell where she was admitted and stayed there in their therapy for two weeks, only being allowed to leave with the plan to have therapy continued in her own home. This sister is now doing so well. There are many other situations where John Alan Carmichael has not only provided pitiful care but has been the source for repeat and continuing drug prescriptions (painkillers, opioids, etc.) to drug addicts both young and old. I understand he is well known in Corpus for this behavior. Pretty big practice, I hear. Yet, for some unknown reason he has been allowed to practice for many years. I have tried to speak with him several times since I saw him at the hospice, but he will not return my calls. Well, to make a long and dreadful story a bit more concise, when I saw my sister in the hospice, she was alert and reaching out to my younger sister. She was trying desperately to speak, but her words were garbled. She was in a half sitting position and was very much alive, alert, conscious and responsive. I went out into the hall and spoke with the nurses, they all told me that they had always wondered why my sister was sent to Hospice, as they did not consider her a dying person. I then spoke with two of her children and then immediately called 911. The paramedics arrived quickly and they agreed: that we should move her out of the hospice. They all asked us why was she here. We had her transported to Spohn Shoreline where Dr. Campbell Morgan has his stroke center. When we arrived at Spohn, we were asked many questions including the one I remember most. Why was she ever sent to John Alan Carmichael and Bayview Hospital and to the hospice. Just as the paramedic had told us,---that paramedics all over the city know to transport stroke patients to Spohn Shorelilne. But for some unknown and mysterious reason, she was sent instead to John Alan Carmichael at Bayview. I advise you to read this narrative carefully and be very watchful and careful of the doctor you choose. Ask around, Corpus is pretty tight knit, you can find out. John Alan Carmichael should and will be exposed as the derelict and incompetent physician that he really is. My sister would be buried by now. I am happy to say, she was admitted to a therapy center after dismissal from Spohn and is responding beautifully. We are all overwhelmed with her progress and returning strength. And we want her back in our lives, not in the ground. John Alan Carmichael: you know who I am. You should "man up" and quit hiding from me and our family. I live in the real world and understand you don't have the grit or integrity to do so. As a family, we are all astounded that you came very close to killing my sister, except for the love of her family. Maybe that kind of love is something you know nothing about.

She delivered my baby girl in June 2016! It was my first, the best experience of my lifetime. I am ever so grateful to have found such a wonderful Doctor with wonderful staff! I will forever go to her to be my OBGYN and when/ if I decide to have another baby! Thank you so much for everything you and your nurses and staff do! Very highly recommend her! Sometimes you may have to wait in the office. This is only because she can get behind when she travels over to the hospital to which her office is connected to Christus Spohn South, to deliver a baby sometimes. I completely understand this! She is a very hard working woman that cares about everyone! Thank you so much for all the knowledge and for the delivery of my very healthy beautiful baby girl! You are a blessing! We need more doctors like you!
