    Albacore Tuna Melt
    Mark E.

It had been ages since I had been to a Marie Callender's. (There aren't that many still around.) My nostalgia got the best of me, though, and I visited the Whittier location which is, supposedly, one of their better ones. Overall, I was pleased. This is one of their classic locations, with a separate bar. Sadly, the former salad bar, though still there, sits empty. The service started off poorly. They still do a lot of take-out business, and it seems this takes priority over seating guests. Once I was taken to my table, however, I was greeted by a terrific server who clearly took pride in her job. I had a tuna melt, something I've been checking-out at a lot of places recently. The version here was one of the better ones. Overall, a very good experience. I'll be back again soon. This is yet another one of those classics that deserves to stick around. And there are many more classic dishes on their menu to get reacquainted with.

Let's start by saying I have lived in Whittier area my entire life so Marie's has been an institution for me. Service hear is always friendly and quick. The food is what you would expect from Marie's good quality prep of the standards. Their cornbread continues to be world famous. The Cobb salad I so enjoy has changed over the years, but its is still one of my go to places for that salad. The Vegetable Minestrone was exceptional and surprised me on how good it was although should be served a bit hotter. The decor and all its charm remains the same although it's very dated. Needs an infusion of capital to modernize the dinning area - WITHOUT losing the Cooper ceiling and what makes Marie's recognizable. Good example - lose the salad bar which has turned in to storage for cutlery and napkins. Keep Going Maries !!

Was really impressed by how staff handled the huge unexpected crowd on a weekday night. I believe it was busy because of the Rose Bowl, not sure, but on January 7th, it was packed! They didn't even have enough servers to open every table area. But despite it all, they moved quickly and had top notch customer service. Shout out to Jackie for being super sweet and amazing! She ran the front counter with ease and grace. May her food always be delicious and good things always come her way. Didn't see our usual favorite server, Keith, but our server was good. I don't remember her name, should have written it down. Food was excellent as always. I got the pie trio, with my favorite, shepherd's pie, along with cream cheese pie. Also tried the lemon muffin which was delicious! Thank you Jackie for reserving it for me! I saw it was the last one and didn't want to miss out. Looking forward to coming again.

Came to this Marie Callander's in Whittier after not being here in over 20 years and we were sat right away and serviced by this amazing fun energy server named Eric, he gave me the recommendations of having breakfast Chilaquiles. I must say I was very impressed with how delicious these turned out to be. The food came out fast as well as my mimosa which was one of his favorite specials, orange and Cran juice to mix with our champagne. The Blueberry berry streusel muffin was such a hit. I love it all here thank you for having such amazing service and an amazing server. The food was delicious. Definitely coming back for breakfast again add to hope to have our new server Erick again as well. It is servers like him that make food that much more enjoyable for me. The ambience is great and just coming back to seeing him brighten my day again would make that much more of an enjoyable meal. Thank you.

Didn't know Marie calendar's still existed. Husband took the fam here to see how it is. Beef stroganoff still as good as I remember it! I don't know of too many places that serve that dish so I'm happy to be able to have it again. Cornbread is more like cake than bread (which is what I prefer... moist and soft) and the garlic bread is really good too. It's nice and quiet on a Sunday night. I eye roll at the kids choosing Kraft Mac and cheese kids meal (pricey at $12.99), but they let us substitute garlic bread for fruit and it was a nice selection.... They let my girl choose only watermelon so she was happy. Service was pretty good, food arrived much quicker than expected. The kids didn't finish the placemat activities yet! It's a bit of a drive since we were looking around the trains and such like tourists lol. Anyway would return!

Last week my pop and I had lunch at Marie Callender's in Whittier, and I've got to say--it was an outstanding experience. The food was great, no doubt, but what really made the visit memorable was our server, Maricela. She was top shelf from start to finish. She checked in on us at just the right times, answered all our questions with patience, and carried herself with a big, genuine smile the entire time. Maricela was professional, friendly, and clearly takes pride in what she does. That kind of service is rare these days, and it made a real difference for us. You can tell she truly cares about her customers, and that energy reflects well on the whole restaurant. We'll definitely be coming back--and we'll be recommending Marie Callender's to others because of experiences like this. Thank you, Maricela, for making our time there something special.

As we waited, I started noticing something interesting: two parties who came in after us were seated immediately. Then almost 30 minutes went by. At that point, I poked my head back in and said, "Hey, we put our name down about 30 minutes ago, and I've noticed people coming in and getting seats." Immediately, the hostess who originally helped us said, "Yes, yes... sorry about that. You can choose a table right now." So apparently our table had been available in the Witness Protection Program. To make matters worse, we were seated next to one of the parties that arrived after us, and we got to enjoy the thrilling experience of watching them receive their food before we even ordered. The food itself was good overall. The only miss for me was the mac and cheese, which tasted like KFC mac and cheese that had a passionate encounter with a jar of jalapeño juice. Would I come back? Maybe. The food was decent, but for a first visit, the service definitely left a stronger impression than the meal did.

Service was friendly, helpful, and efficient. This is a tiny gem in Uptown. They've been open about a year. I hope people will discover and enjoy it like we did. But I've learned that if I order my steaks rare or even blue rare at a place not known for their steaks, it comes out to the desired medium rare I wanted all along. Such was the case tonight. I asked for rare but it came out closer to medium rare--maybe even dipping into medium. No big whoop. The baseball steak was still juicy and delicious. The fries were still great shoestring. And I can live with a chimichurri sauce instead of the preferable hollandaise or bearnaise these usually come with. I just wish I could actually ask for a medium rare and get medium at a food joint other than where it costs me $60 or $70 a cut. The service was good. She was pleasant and quick on her feet. The ambience was good. It was a quaint space and had a lot of charm. I can't say it was too full but I attribute that more to the day being full of sporting events like the World Cup and some silly NBA thing than an actually critique of the restaurant. Subsequently, I found this a good place for dinner but not superb and I found myself wondering when the next like fate might bring me here.

A weekend brunch with friends brought me to Madre's Whittier, where the menu offered plenty of tempting options--and a few unexpected lessons about ordering seafood. I tried the Ensenada Omelet, loaded with shrimp, salmon, crab, and octopus. Now, I'm a seafood lover, but octopus and I aren't exactly close friends. I asked if it could be removed, but since the seafood mix is pre-made, the octopus had already RSVP'd to the party. The omelet was good, topped with a creamy sauce, but not something I'd order again. The crab appeared to be imitation crab, and while everything was prepared well, it just wasn't a standout for me. The real star? The strawberry pancakes. Delicious! Next time, I'd order those with a side of eggs and call it a win. I also sampled the chilaquiles, and now that's a dish I'd come back for. The Tiramisu Latte was another favorite--not overly sweet and packed with that classic tiramisu flavor I love. A special shoutout to our waitress, Annie, who was attentive, friendly, and made our brunch experience even better. My Verdict: Skip the Ensenada Omelet and build your brunch around the stars of the menu instead. The strawberry pancakes are the must-order item, the chilaquiles are a strong savory choice, and the Tiramisu Latte ties everything together. If you order wisely, Madre's delivers a brunch worth coming back for.

I'm honestly very disappointed…read more We ordered delivery from what used to be one of our favorite local restaurants. Three years ago, we dined here and had an amazing experience, which is why we were excited to order again. Unfortunately, this meal was one of the worst restaurant experiences we've had. I ordered the pork ribs and fried shrimp. The ribs were extremely dry--so dry that they tasted like they had been cooked days earlier and reheated multiple times. They were nothing like the ribs I remembered from previous visits. After just a few bites, I started feeling uncomfortable. The fried shrimp was equally disappointing. It had almost no flavor at all and tasted bland and uninspired. My husband ordered the burger, which was advertised as a blend of Wagyu and regular beef. We were expecting something special, but the patty lacked flavor and the quality was disappointing. What surprised us even more was that we live only five minutes away, yet the burger bun arrived completely soggy. The packaging was also poor. The food came in cheap plastic containers without any ventilation holes. For fried foods especially, proper packaging is important to prevent steam from ruining the texture. It felt like very little care was put into preparing the order for delivery. To make matters worse, both my husband and I experienced stomach discomfort and excessive gas afterward, and we were still feeling it the next day. What makes this experience especially disappointing is that this was my husband's birthday dinner. I chose this restaurant because of the wonderful memories we had here years ago, but the food quality was nowhere near what we remembered. I genuinely cannot understand how food of this quality was considered acceptable to send out to customers. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was so disappointing that I felt compelled to share it. I sincerely hope the restaurant takes a closer look at its food quality and delivery standards.
