If I could, I would give Marilyn more than 5 stars. I noticed most of the bad reviews is based off of making appointments but after going to Marilyn for more than 3 years, NOT ONCE has she disappointed me. I've gone to Marilyn for my Brazilian sugaring and every single time she has done a spectacular job. I have always had fun, lovely conversations with her and you can tell that she is very experienced at how to get every strand of hair OUT. I also trust her in her knowledge of natural/organic products and how to treat your skin because she is also a nurse. She has told me that she makes and uses her own sugar wax and I know that it's really good quality because it sticks VERY well. She will examine my skin closely to make sure she gets very strand because if she doesn't, she will pluck it out. A+++ JOB! I always leave with SUPER smooth skin. NEVER bumpy, NO ingrown hairs, NO redness. And it lasts 3-4 weeks. I love her. This review is due to the customer service provided. I've been sugar waxing regularly for over 6 months but just moved to town and was looking for a new salon. First, Marilyn did not return 2 phone calls, an email, nor a text for over a week. I was patient because one of the days was July 4. I finally got an appointment only after PRE PAYING for it. I understand taking credit card information in case of a no-show but prepaying is ridiculous. I had questions and a coupon and, given the sensitive nature of a Brazilian, I was quite uncomfortable paying for a service when I'd never even spoken to the provider but I wanted my coupon to be honored and the only way, apparently, to communicate with Marilyn was to see her face to face. I arrived for my appointment, for which I had a confirmation email, on-time. Marilyn's door was locked. The first woman in the hair salon in which Marilyn's salon is housed, told me that Marilyn was there because her light was on. After waiting 10 minutes, I asked another woman and she was unable to help me beyond "did you send her a text?" (The hair salon is not affiliated with Marilyn's business so this review is no reflection upon them.) After 15 minutes I did send Marilyn another text. She said she was there. Then a minute later she replied she'd be there in 10 minutes. She did not arrive to begin my service until an hour after my appointment. Normally, I'd have left of course! But since I had PREPAID and, given her lack of communication, I chose to wait because I had no confidence I'd be able to reschedule. She told me it was a mini-emergency (her words.) Turns out, her son's friend, who had spent the night, would not wake up to go to school. She left to go get him. Marilyn DID NOT CALL or text to tell me we needed to reschedule due to an emergency. She just let me arrive and wait and wait and the only reason I knew she was on her way back to the salon was because I reached out to her. The underarm sugar wax I received was good. She got everything, and even used tweezers to get a few shorter strays. She knows how to provide that service well. Finally, I asked about an appointment for my coupon. I had purchased a Living Social deal on June 27 and my request to use it was only one week later. The voucher did not expire until October 31. Marilyn told me she was no longer honoring those vouchers (she believed her contract had ended with them - clearly she didn't understand the contract either) and she refused service, telling me I needed to ask Living Social for a refund. Because Marilyn did not return my multiple attempts at communication the first week, it was now past the 3 day refund window Living Social has, and that was another 2 week hassle! The business owner and Living Social put me in the middle to solve their lack of customer service. So in summary, Marilyn seems to be skilled at providing sugar waxes but she is a terrible communicator and customer service provider. It's too bad for her because I live only 5 minutes away and would have become a regular customer for leg, underarm, and Brazilian services. Awful experience! I called after I had no success booking online, she was rude to my daughter who I was setting the appt for, refused to take our info and told us to text her. I did as she requested, she sent an appointment time late last night for today at 2pm, we had already explained my daughter flys out early Friday for an event so had to get in some place today.. At about 12:45 today she texted that she was canceling her 2pm appt for a family emergency and would see her Friday morning.. She still has not responded to my calls or text. Just wanted to put a good word in for Marilyn. I've been to several places for waxing/sugaring before and she is far and away the one who has the most attention to detail. Even if she's busy your appointment never feels rushed, and she makes sure to get every last hair out. Customer service is horrendous. If I would have known that I would be ghosted by my own waxer I wouldn't have purchased any deal. It's so hard to get a call back or even a text from this lady. The first time I tried booking I called a couple times and left voicemails. I later get a text saying "text is better" Weird that a professional establishment prefers texts but whatever, I text her and confirmed a time. I go the day of and she was 45 minutes late to the appointment. The second time I tried booking I texted a couple time asking when she would be available, she kept giving me the run around"I'm available next week"(her) Then I reply "ok does 3pm work", she replied back "no, 3 isn't ok". I reply back "ok how about 1pm". She replies "1pm I'm booked". Finally I gave up trying to guess her availability so I asked what time works best she said 8am, on a weekday. Well that obviously doesn't work for me since I work at an office during he week. I asked when she would be available again in the afternoon...no reply and I waited 3 days until I texted again. I finally asked for a refund since I didn't want to deal with her anymore and she replied back "no refunds on offers." I absolutely love going to Marilyn for my brazilian wax, all the ingredients in the paste are natural and organic so it doesn't irritate my sensitive skin. Although it does hurt for your first time, your body will get used to it if you do it every month, after the third session some of your hair follicles just stop working and you'll have some patches where hair does not grow which is better! read more

Super bummed. I made an appointment online over the weekend for a Brazilian the next Monday at 5. I instantly received a confirmation email and then a reminder the next day. I arrived early at about 4:45 and no one was at the spa. I thought nothing of it at first because the spa seems to be a very small business and I thought perhaps that owner had a gap in appointments and would arrive by 5. Well, 5 came and went. Still no one. At 5:10 I finally called to see what the deal was. When I informed the woman on the line that I had an appointment and no one was here she asked when I made the appointment. After checking, she had no record of it. Ugh, you have got to be kidding me. So frustrating! To make matters worse, she seemed very casual about the whole thing. She did apologize, but not like one should after completely blowing off a new client. She simply said, "I'm sorry, I don't have a record of your appointment, would you like to reschedule?" NO THANKS! I would have felt horrible blowing off a customer like that and apologized profusely. Instead she acted like it was no big deal. I know there was no way for her to know this, but I am nine months pregnant and this was a huge inconvenience as just making an extra stop after work can pretty much drain me of all my energy. I will be taking my business to a place that values my time and patronage and as much I am expected to value theirs. read more

A Burbank hidden gem! I just had the best organic facial with Marilyn. Ignore the old fashioned website. Ignore that the space looks like your aunt's sitting room (this is not Burke Williams). Marilyn is a walking encyclopedia of ingredients, and custom makes all of her own skincare. Hailing from Cameroon where her mother was a traditional herbalist, and with a background in engineering, chemistry, and nursing, her formulas are sophisticated, effective, and healing. She has a wonderful touch and made my skin feel like butter with no redness or sensitivity. Can't recommend enough. Oh, and you can shop her products online! I called Marilyn Max Organic Spa since I noticed great reviews on skincare. I asked if they had availability for today, and the lady who answered said they don't make same day appointments. I knew the chances of getting a last minute appointment would be impossible, so I definitely understood. So, I inquired on two specific services, and the woman said that she doesn't like doing one of those two services unless she looks at the person's skin first. So I tried to ask her if I could walk in today for them to look at my skin, and depending on what they say I schedule appointment for another day. However, I didn't get to complete my question because she rudely interrupted me. She sounded bothered as she said, "We DO NOT accept walk-ins.!" I said, "Okay, thank you", and disconnected call. That call was a minute and fifty-two seconds long, and it'll be my last. There's a way to speak to people, especially a potential customer. Good Customer Service is everything, and goes a long way! She was able to get me 3 days after the first contact so I really liked that. It was my first time and she made me feel at ease. I used a Living Social voucher for a one-hour enzyme facial here today and my skin feels fantastic! The spa is a little lonely, on a quiet strip in Burbank and Marilyn, the owner, administered my treatment. What she lacked in bedside manner, she more than made up for with a nice touch and how she talked me through the whole process (what she was putting on my face and why). The facial even included aromatherapy plus a shoulder and scalp massage. Total bonus! Marilyn the owner is extremely detailed, generous and an educator. If you have a scheduled appointment, (No walk-ins) she typically goes beyond the scheduled time giving the client a bit extra. I have been going to Marilyn since she opened. The only reason I am giving a 3 star is because I am a visual person, and each time I have been there the lights and music remained off. The facials and massages are amazing, but I'd also like to feel like I am at a Day Spa that's awake;-) This last statement is meant as a helpful tip. I first learned about ArboreDerm when I met Marilyn at the North Hollywood Farmer's Market last year. She was selling organic soaps, creams and butters that were made in her shop in Burbank. If you see her complexion, you would do whatever she says. I finally made my way into her shop for a much needed facial. During the visit, I had her absolute attention. We were the only 2 people in the spa. She did an extremely thorough evaluation of my skin which generally was good, but I did have many many bumps under my skin. She told me I would benefit from a few rounds of chemical peels. Horrified at the word CHEMICAL, she assured me that she used 100% organic citrus acids for the peels. I was scared, but I went and she was kind and gentle. She explained what to expect. The very next day, and each day after that, she called me and texted me to see how my skin was doing. She told me to take a few photos of my skin and send them to her so she could evaluate. I have never before been treated with such attention and care. She decided that I could use some shea butter for some irritation I was experiencing and had it sent over to my place. I have just complete peel number 3 out of 4 scheduled. My face looks and feels great! She is a firm believer in "Don't just take my word for it, do research!" She also has a lot of integrity and believes that business comes to you when you are honest with people about what they need. She does not try to sell you things that you will not benefit from. I have bought 4 canisters of cocoa butter from her (2 as gifts for a pregnant mom to prevent stretch marks and another mom to reduce stretch marks) and I bought bath salts from her that she made specifically for me, and having sampled some of her facial cleanser which I will be purchasing the next time I see her. She sells oils and scrubs and souffles OH MY! I will be sitting down with her to do natural mineral makeup as well. I'm exciting to have makeup that is tailored to my exact skin tone and color! I made an appointment with her for Saturday at 5:00. The very same thing that happened to Lindsey M. happened to me. Must be a pattern with her. Beware future clients. She's rude and would not take any responsibility for her actions. I sat in my car for 20 minutes in the heat on Saturday waiting to see if she would unlock the door, thinking she was with another client. I had a party to go to that night & needed the service I booked with her. Huge inconvenience and she didn't care. She told me she prefers clients makes their appointments online. Well, that's what she should have told me when she called me back to make the appointment. On her website, it does not say it's mandatory to make your appointment online. She needs to take a class on how to run a business more efficiently and never to abuse people's valuable time. This is a review based strictly in sugar waxing. I got a Brazilian and I was looking for the hair to be left at the top and have it in a triangle with everything facing the ground gone. Progress led to a very patchy situation and I asked if she could do a strip instead. She obliged and I figured that meant she could do it. I ended up with a very lop-sided patch of hair and she missed the whole left inner thigh and another huge patch on the right. She said they do not specialize in shaping which is fine I just wish she said she could not do it in the beginning or before the strip. The hair grew back in a week and it was very frustrating (I am used to not seeing hair for over 4 weeks with sugar waxing). Her skin products seemed amazing and successful I just was not content with the outcome of my waxing. This was my first real facial. I've heard horror stories from friends about how bad extractions hurt so I was a little scared. One friend told me that even when she started to cry the lady did not stop. She ended up with scars after. This was not the case at ArboreDerm Organic Spa. When she did my extractions she was very gentle and it didn't hurt at all. At one point she even said, "Ok I'm going to stop because your skin is turning a little pink." That was great! It showed me that she was really paying attention to how my skin was reacting to everything. She explained everything she was doing and had a great personality. The inside decor of the place is very zen. You can hear the trickling water while you're getting your facial and it was very soothing. My skin was a little sensitive afterwards but I figured it was normal after all it just went through. The next day my face was glowing and my skin was so soft! I loved it! The only reason I'm not giving this spa 5 stars is because she was late on starting my appointment. That day I had everything planned down to the minute so the 15 minutes really threw me off track. Luckily it was Saturday so traffic wasn't as bad. Other than that I loved my first experience and that she used all natural products. I have sensitive skin so I don't respond well to chemicals. I was the first client in and M said facial would be 'about 1 hr'. Well, it was at least that; I didn't feel rushed at all. Also, I have to preface this by saying I am a LS dream--I NEVER use my coupons but Marilyn (owner) extended BOTH of mine because I was so behind in using them. She really accommodated me in that department. The products were dreamy, most of them devoid of scent. She also really lathered them on, esp. the mask. She talked to me a lot while I was there about healing w/out western medicine, from the inside out. She is going to nursing school I guess. But she really knows the ingredients and my concern was WHAT MAKES THESE PRODUCTS LAST w/out preservatives?? I have been going to Marlene for almost two years and I am thrilled with the results that she helped achieve on my face.
