I have been going to the Marin County Fair since my child was young and he is now a grown man . We always loved the gardens and the rides we felt safe we always had a lot of fun and it was always beautiful . However, tonight I just left and I can't even describe how disgusted and disappointed I was. I appreciate security officials and they are much needed in this world we live in now. I don't appreciate being monitored like I'm a shoplifter at Walmart. . My hubby is 66 and I am 60 we are clearly of drinking age and yet because our ID had an expired date we were not allowed to purchase alcohol at the fair . We wanted to look at exhibits but they closed early and the fireworks started without an announcement or anything to indicate they were beginning. It seemed like everything closed so quickly and we missed getting to see the animals or the art or the things that people made or children's creations. Hoping to rescue our night, we traveled over to the only spots open which were the rides and a few of the vendors that were packing up . We were unable to get on a ride because they went one more time and then they closed all of them even though the park was still very full . As we were leaving the amusement ride area to walk back to the parking lot across the lake, a large group of workers and security personnel shining flashlights at us informed us that the bridge was closed and we would have to walk all the way out and around . Unfortunately my husband had just had surgery and could not walk that far to the handicap parking. . We asked if somebody could escort us across and they refused, we asked for help and they seemed uninterested and told us to exit and talk with the parking officials. A group of younger folks that were volunteering tried to help find a a way to get us all the way around the lake to the handicap parking. As we were walking out there was security and people with flashlights ushering us to go faster to " move and dont stop". The grass is not grass it's dirt with holes and it was dark and I felt extremely uncomfortable hoping that my hubby wouldn't fall and screw up his leg again. All in all it was a really disappointing experience. We were there to have fun and enjoy the fair. it felt safe which was great but there was no fun, there was no excitement and even the people that were doing the games and rides seemed completely bored. Between the overwhelming security the dismissive attitudes and the basic rudeness of the people working there, it was just another disappointing change to a once loved tradition.

County fairs are always a joy for me, earmarking summer and quality time spent with friends and family. This year, the Marin County fair has a set price at $25 (buy online only and scan ticket at entrance) including all rides except for 3 that is $5/ride. Parking is $20 card only. More vendors selling knick knacks this year and I noticed a Hawaiian shaved ice stand I didn't see before. My favs every year is the arts fair where you can purchase some local art and always the animal section (pig race, petting zoo, sheep shearing). This year there were a half a dozen spotted piglets knocked out from the heat you can pet. Adorbs. Note lines weren't bad for the rides until about 6pm when the night crowd started rolling in. And I think fireworks are daily at 9:30pm. Lots of people setup picnic spaces about an hour prior to that for optimal viewing.

I haven't been here in years, came for TLC concert, which if you don't get seats hours before, good luck seeing the stage from across lagoon, just a bad set up for a concert. Very very dusty, food vendors were mediocre, beer and wine only, you can't buy tixs at the gate, QR code only, and was very hard to connect to, very long lines to get in, only because the crowd doesn't know how to read and try's to bring in large backpacks and blankets and then tries to argue with security about it and hold up the lines even more. The fireworks were good and plenty. Smart train runs late for fair, so huge crowd thank you to them, very crowded so you know, thanks Marin but I'll stick to other fairs.

I always try to make it to the fair--it only comes once a year, so why not! The desserts are my favorite part. Funnel cakes are a must, and I went for the Nutella one with ice cream--$21, a little pricey but totally worth it. Also grabbed a Nutella crepe for $10 and a falafel gyro for around $20. Prices have definitely gone up, but a tip: book your tickets weeks (or even months) in advance to save some money. The rides range from easy to intense, depending on what you're up for. And if you're going, July 5th is a great day--the lines move surprisingly fast!

As much as I enjoy the fair, I do find it disappointing that the admission price is now 30. Especially when they know you're going to buy tons of things inside. I find it more insane to charge $20 for parking on top of the $30 you pay for admission. I do enjoy all the food, family fun and crowds. But spending that much on a fair can really take away from that. I also do feel like $16 for a spiked agua Fresca with well rum is kind of steep. It should be at least a brand name for their alcohol. On a lighter note, they do have lots of food and drink options available for everyone. I enjoyed looking at the farm animals and seeing the art exhibit. The live music on 4th of July was also great.

A great place to enjoy the fireworks, carnival rides, games and food but be warned, the food is expensive plus the entrance fee as well.

Always so fun. I go every year and I like the rides, food music, the art work, the animals and petting area and yes the food. It is a little expensive $20 to park and ticket prices were high too $15 or $18 a person. And of course every night they have the fireworks!

Ask the Community - Marin County Fair

Can we bring our own food in?

The current fair website says they allow personal soft sided coolers inside. No large or hard sided coolers. No glass, bottles or cans. I brought in an empty plastic bottle, which was cool. Sandwiches & chips, snacks, etc. should be cool as long as…

    Kids under three..free? TIA

The 2019 Fair website says children age 3 & under are free to admit. However, keep in mind the fair's last day was almost 2 weeks ago, so best to check next year's website to confirm same guidelines. Best, Darrin

Can you leave and come back on same day? (re-entry)?

Yes, just make sure to get a hand stamp at the gates before you leave!

    What's the least crowded day?

Probably the non july4th and non weekend day

Talked to a lot of photographers, including one film 4x5 view-camera photog, which is a rarity these days! Lots of sculptures too, very colorful and very original. I love to see the paintings and the sculptures, which at one point both clash and blend today to offer visitors the best that a normal gallery can't ever offer! Admission fee charged ($10) but if you get on the mailing list of one of the festival's artists/vendor, you can get a postcard by mail to allow you FREE entry!! Lots of entertainment to keep everyone interested and content, along with food vendors to keep that stomach happy too!! If you're in the market for art for your home, walls or as a gift to a friend, you cannot beat the variety nor the selection in one place!!! HEY: FREE parking!!!! If you take your camera to snap away at the great sights, please remember this: RESPECT other artists' work by asking first if you can snap a pix. First off they will want to know WHY and PURPOSE of the picture. If you do post it, even if it's at MySpace (yuck) or something, at least take a card and list their email or URL of their site. DO NOT snap pixs of paintings/photography on display. Not considered cool at all unless of course you know the artist and it's been approved. NOTE: Pictures displayed with my review were with approval/knowledge of the artists. ;-)

Pros: -Held on the grounds of the beautiful Marin County Civic Center (nearby pond with fountain, ducks and geese-great for a picnic lunch) -Free parking -Affordable jewelry and crafts for the home -Well laid out and easy to walk through and see everything you want to see -Nice to speak to the artists about their work Cons: -Honestly $10 admission is a bit steep for the quality of the artists. While there are some unique works and great artists, I've seen many of them at various Art Festivals in the Bay Area that were free to attend-I don't think this event is "juried." If I'm going to pay to get in, I prefer that it were. -Not a great assortment of food and drinks -I've been here twice and this year it seemed a bit "empty"-there was a ton of open space where tents and displays seem like they should have been but instead there was just a void. -Cash only for admission-they should have that on the website-I saw several fair goers who had no idea and had to leave to go get cash Overall, I'd say check it out-it's usually a beautiful day in June in San Rafael, but I think it's trying too hard to be like the Sausalito Art Festival, which just doesn't compare.

Absolutely worth a visit, it's not as crowded as some other festivals and has something for everyone. About six to seven thousand people attend for the weekend. It's a unique environment, amongst the giant shady trees, to browse 135 artists' work, listen to music, and participate in some crafts if you'd like to. It's especially good for kids because they have a fairy house treasure hunt, puppet show, magic show, and story time in a ring of redwood trees. For adults, there's a hippie-esque vibe, maybe a rich boomer vibe; they have food and beverages and lots of art to purchase. I recommend using one of the free shuttles from local schools to avoid trying to park around the location of the festival itself. Overall, this is a great community experience. This year, I was happy to see a "Special Presentation Grove" where neurodivergent artists' work was on display for purchase. Specifically, the groups represented were Autistry Makers, Art Without Boundaries, Helix School, Oak Hill School, and Project Awareness and Special Sports (PAASS). One nonverbal austic artist named Jamesey had his work on display too ( here is a link to his work https://deyoungopenexhibition.artcall.org/submissions/qr-view/166794 ). It was nice moment and an important one for those with disabilities and autism.

Never have I read such accurate assessments as those penned here on yelp to commemorate the sad remains of what this festival has become. Because I've been away the past couple of Labor Day weekends it'd been 3 years since my last visit to SAF. The price is still exorbitant ($30, $15 parking) and buys you nothing more than you can get for free at any street festival in the Bay Area, all summer long. In the past though, that fee could be somewhat rationalized by the quality of the live music, original art, and food/drink and the fact that all of that could be enjoyed from an inviting waterfront location. Where to begin... The primary music venue here once overlooked Richardson Bay, with plenty of covered seating areas to accommodate all those who wanted to eat or drink, not dance, while enjoying the music. An added bonus was those who listened from kayaks on the bay, charming and unique. In 2019, the music stage was moved. It no longer faces the water, no longer has covered seating, and the only seating area at all is VIP (extra $$) or on a hill quite far from the music. Don't even get me started on the ADA seats on the hill. Is it even legal to make disabled folks climb a grassy hill to sit on a precariously perched folding chair? I'd bet not. Shame on you, SAF. Strike two: The food booths, art, and music are all segregated and none face or front the water. You might as well be in Gilroy. Gone is the opportunity to grab an ice cream while enjoying the art; you'll need to return to the food area for that. And while you're there? The only seating is at unshaded picnic tables with, again, no view of anything. Did I mention that there used to be 15 different kinds of food and now there are 8? Well, now I did. A friend of mine remarked to one artist how appealing her shaded spot was. The artist's comment? "That's the only good thing about this". Telling, huh? The artists, always high quality, were in shorter supply than usual and given their new surroundings I can't say I blamed them. I could go on and on but instead I'll echo the universally bad reviews penned in 2019 in saying: There was nothing to keep anyone there this year. Between musical acts, the stage area went radio silent and if you'd already eaten, drank, or viewed the art it was essentially time to go. I did just that, leaving well before the days' headliner (Blues Traveler) because there was nothing more to enjoy and nowhere to sit. In 2019, SAF couldn't have veered further off course than they did. After a year as dismal as this one, I tend to think they can only improve. Time will tell whether this one-time 5-star attraction can return to its former glory.
