Intimate space with a…read moresmall number of seats; there's definitely a sense of being personally connected to the interactions on stage. In February, I caught the premier of "Cuckoo Edible Magic," a show that playwright Reed Flores calls "a love letter to being a brown kid in the Bay Area." To me, a brown kid who grew up in SF, the story of family bonds & trauma feels familiar, heartbreaking, even. Love the shout-out to BART & specific neighborhoods. Appreciated the handful of Asian & Pacific Island languages & accents spoken on stage. And while I didn't grow up with a love for Sailor Moon or video games, I know those references resonated with so many in the audience. An obvious & loud five stars for the production. Wonderful staff. Ticket prices are so reasonable, you'll have a few extra dollars to donate to the theater. Unique programming. And the picturesque location (with parking & eateries at your fingertips) is pretty hard to beat. Can't wait to see my next show here.

I'd never been to a Berkeley Repertory show until this year. I'm surprised because I'm such a big…read moretheatre nerd. I was served an ad on Instagram for Arthur Miller's All My Sons in March 2026. It stars Jimmy Smits (of Star Wars and the West Wing fame! That's my President Santos and Bail Organa!) and his wife Wanda DeJesus. Such big names! I took my mom to a weekday matinee. It was a packed house and skewed older (hey, it was a weekday.) The theatre was clean and intimate. There was no bad seat in there! They did have a young person's discount if you're under 35 which was nice (if you're under 35.) Maybe if Berkeley built more housing, the city would be more welcoming and inclusive to young people and there wouldn't be that discount. Bathrooms were clean. After the show (which was a tearjerker), there was a Postshow Discussion with a docent (a UC Berkeley grad student.) It was fun discussing the show with other attendees who stayed. It was like a book club! Intimate and inclusive, and then there was a surprise--Jimmy Smits and Wanda DeJesus came to listen and contribute to the conversation! (And then do autographs and photographs.) Berkeley Repertory is a community hub. I appreciate their shows and the discussions they evoke (and the space they provide to have said discussions.) The SF Chronicle raved about All My Sons and I could not rave about it more either! Time to reread Arthur Miller and also support local theatre!

I've been exploring my neighborhood and working through the artist way and thought why not go for an artist date at BATS improv. It's cute it's homey. The first popcorn was free. They have drinks for sale alcoholic and non alcoholic. Then you can walk into the theatre and find a spot to sit. Closer to the front and your shout outa might have an easier time of being chosen. I came for the improve battle of newbies mixed with veterans. It was fun to guess who was who. They did different games and totaled points with elimination rounds. So of course there was a range in experience and expertise. Regardless I was thoroughly entertained laughed, cringed, felt surprised, and elated. Honestly a much better way to spend an evening compared to a movie. In person human connection. That's what we need as a collective whole these days.
